NEW YORK, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- New York University School of Medicine announced today the establishment of a new department dedicated to the study and treatment of child and adolescent psychiatry. The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry will be chaired by Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., founder and director of the NYU Child Study Center, and is only the second independent department of a major university in the United States to devote its extraordinary resources to the critically important mission of researching, treating and ultimately alleviating the suffering of 12 million young patients and their families.
"We are confident that the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry will develop breakthrough treatments that battle the devastating impact of mental disorders in both children and adolescents," said John Sexton, president of New York University. "The Department's keystone, the NYU Child Study Center, is a vital component of our medical school and university, and we are committed to playing a defining role in the treatment of disorders that pose a grave public health risk and collectively fuel some of the nation's most intractable problems -- from violence and suicide to drug abuse and homelessness."
"The creation of a department at New York University devoted solely to the study and treatment of children's psychiatric disorders positions us to shift the current paradigm by assembling a team of experts to aggressively research and treat mental illness in much the same way that cancer, heart disease, and other serious health issues are addressed," said Robert M. Glickman, M.D., dean of the NYU School of Medicine. "We will continue our careful integration of science and clinical services with our training and outreach programs. We will be at the forefront of advances in the genetics and microbiology of psychiatric disorders while being totally dedicated to eliminating the social stigma that plagues our young patients and their families."
Departmental designation in the field of academic medicine means greater Medical School support in terms of capital and human resources, permanence, standing and autonomy. These are all factors which speak to an institution's ability to recruit leading scientists, conduct groundbreaking research, make faculty appointments and develop and expand the best clinical services available. The Child Study Center brings to the new department six endowed chairs.
"There is a critical shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists in this country, and that has a ripple effect on delinquency, school drop out rates, teen suicide, adolescent substance abuse, and school violence," said Koplewicz. "The development of this facility will provide revolutionary new approaches to research in child mental health that will have a transformative impact on treatment of child psychiatric disorders similar to that of the Salk and Sabin vaccines on polio."
Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., founder and director of the NYU Child Study Center, is the Arnold and Debbie Simon Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; professor of Pediatrics, New York University School of Medicine; director, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Bellevue Hospital Center; and executive director of the New York State Office of Mental Health's Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research.
In February, New York State Gov. George Pataki announced a $30 million commitment to create a New York State Center of Excellence at the Child Study Center, as part of a $200 million investment in children's mental health by New York State and the philanthropic community. The new state-of-the-art Child Study Center will be the largest child and adolescent treatment, research and training center in the world, will take an integrated, scientific approach to revolutionize child and adolescent mental health in America. This investment also includes $35 million to rebuild Rockland Children's Psychiatric Center in Rockland County in partnership with the NYU Child Study Center, demonstrating a statewide commitment to the improvement of mental health services.
"This is a historic step in support of something many of us have known for a long while -- children are not simply little adults," said Thomas F. Anders, M.D., president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and distinguished professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Emeritus), UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute. "Pediatrics has long been a separate department from general internal medicine. Establishing only the second child and adolescent psychiatry department in over 80 years raises the bar for other universities around the country."
"When we founded the Child Study Center in 1998, we knew it had the potential to become a national leader in the field of children's mental health," said NYU Child Study Center Board Chair Brooke Garber Neidich. "These disorders can rob children of their ability to learn, to make and keep friends, and to enjoy life. With the additional resources we will have as a department, we will be able to expand our research capacity and enhance our treatment capabilities, and really change the lives of children."
The projected need for child and adolescent psychiatrists in the United States is estimated to be 30,000. Currently, there are fewer than 7,000. In an effort to further combat this shortage, the Child Study Center launched this fall a new undergraduate minor in child and adolescent mental health designed to encourage students with a natural interest and inclination toward careers in social work, education and special education, psychology, law, medicine, sociology, nursing, public health, scientific journalism and psychiatry, to consider focusing their future career in some significant capacity on children and adolescents.
-----
The NYU Child Study Center is dedicated to the understanding, prevention and treatment of child and adolescent mental health problems. The center offers expert psychiatric services for children and families with emphasis on early diagnosis and intervention. The center's mission is to bridge the gap between science and practice, integrating the finest research with patient care and state-of-the-art training, utilizing the resources of the New York University School of Medicine. The NYU Child Study Center offers a variety of mental health services for children, adolescents, young adults and their families. Child and Family Associates is the clinical arm of the NYU Child Study Center and the point of entry for all clinical programs. Its goal is to bring together research-supported evaluations and treatments with an individualized and family-centered approach. The Child Study Center was founded in 1998 and established as the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry within the NYU School of Medicine in 2006. Web: http://www.AboutOurKids.org

New York, NY - (10/28/03) - To mark the one-year anniversary of the murder of renowned disc jockey Jam Master Jay of the legendary hip hop group Run DMC, BET has announced it will televise a five-part investigative series on the unsolved murder case November 3-7 on BET NIGHTLY NEWS at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT. The series was developed from more than 18 hours of interviews with over a dozen sources over a period of three months, including the immediate family of Jam Master Jay; some of the victim's closest friends; and a key witness present during the slaying last October in a Queens, New York recording studio owned by the DJ.
"While mainstream media has barely scratched the surface in the investigation of the murder of Jam Master Jay, his family, friends and the African-American community still have many unanswered questions," said Nina Henderson Moore, BET Executive Vice President of News, Public Affairs and Program Acquisitions. "With this investigative series, we hope to uncover some of those answers, while also taking a look at the disturbing trend of unsolved murder cases involving African Americans."
BET NIGHTLY NEWS reporter Janell Snowden conducts the interviews throughout the series, revealing publicly some of the issues and suspicions that people closest to Jam Master Jay have kept silent about since his murder. "One year later and without anyone having been brought to justice for this crime, it is clear that Jam Master Jay's family and friends remain frustrated with the lack of closure to this case," said Snowden. "We're grateful that Jam Master Jay's family and friends were willing to share with BET NIGHTLY NEWS their thoughts and emotions as they, like the many fans of Jam Master Jay and Run DMC, wait for the case to be solved."
The following are highlights from the upcoming BET NIGHTLY NEWS five-part series examining the unsolved murder case of hip hop legend Jam Master Jay:

New York, NY - (10-27-03). Judge Mablean Ephriam, star of the popular syndicated television show Divorce Court, has joined forces with TRAVATAN Eye Drops Project Focus to advocate for greater awareness of glaucoma risks among African Americans. TRAVATAN Eye Drops Project Focus is the nationwide multi-city urban outreach initiative launched earlier this year by Alcon Laboratories that uses free glaucoma screenings, distribution of educational materials and national advertising to encourage at-risk members of the African American community to be more conscious of their eye health.
"It's only recently that I became aware of how severe glaucoma is among African Americans in the United States," stated Judge Ephriam. "For example, I hadn't realized that African-Americans are four-to-five times more likely to develop glaucoma than the general population, and that half of all African-American adults in the United States with glaucoma don't know they have it. As a result, I've become very interested in seeing as many people as possible learn about glaucoma and its risk factors."
In this new role, Judge Ephriam was the guest speaker at the National Medical Association's Ophthalmology Awards Banquet honoring winners of the Rabb-Venable Awards for Outstanding Research. At each annual convention, the NMA's Ophthalmology Section presents these awards to medical students and residents from around the country who have conducted outstanding scholarly work in the area of eye and vision research.
A family law practitioner with over 20 years as a trial attorney and mediator, Judge Ephriam has presided over Divorce Court, a relationship-oriented courtroom show, since 1999.
The show enters its fifth season this fall. Formerly a member of the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar and State Bar of California Family Law Sections, Judge Ephriam has also served for five years as Deputy City Attorney in Los Angeles, and been a Hearing Examiner for the City of Los Angeles Civil Service Commission.
Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness among African-Americans. It affects them at a younger age and frequently results in rapid and severe vision loss. Elevated intraocular pressure is a risk factor associated with glaucoma. TRAVATAN ophthalmic solution is a glaucoma medication from Alcon that has proven to be more effective in lowering intraocular pressure than other prostaglandin analogues.
Left untreated, glaucoma may lead to a dangerous buildup of pressure within the eye that eventually damages the delicate optic nerve until eyesight is impaired or a person goes blind. Because there is usually no pain associated with the disease, people at greatest risk won't know they have it until they get screened. Fortunately, the disease can be managed with proper medications, but the key to saving people's eyesight is early detection and treatment.
Since January 2003, almost 2,400 African-American men and women have participated in Project Focus and have received free glaucoma screenings sponsored by TRAVATAN Eye Drops at local churches, community centers and major cultural events.
The National Medical Association is the collective voice of African American physicians and the leading force for parity and justice in medicine and the elimination of disparities in health. As a national professional and scientific organization founded in 1895, it represents the interests of more than 20,000 physicians and their patients.
Alcon, Inc. (NYSE:ACL) is the global leader in the research, development, manufacture and marketing of ophthalmic products, including prescription drugs, surgical instruments and accessory products, intraocular lenses, and contact lens care solutions.

Brooklyn, NY - (9/8/03) Mobile content is extremely popular and a huge success in Europe, and the Pacific Rim. Mobile entertainment, in its 5th year, is receiving a growing acceptance in North America. Ringtones, logos, SMS (simple messaging service) or text messaging are common characteristics of a cell phones, but new handsets with color screens offer a multimedia experience.
There is one minority owned and controlled startup company in Fort Lee, New Jersey that is taking bold steps to make its presence felt in this new marketplace by launching a new content site Gigavue.net that is pronounced phonetically Gee-Ga-View, that extends better quality of Monophonic and Polyphonic Ringtones, plus games, graphics, logos, real tones, message tones and applications that are affordable.
"There are real and great opportunities in this space and we intend to position ourselves to get a piece of the maturing mobile entertainment market," said co-founder Jason Wint. The practical applications of mobile entertainment is that it is a value added service to copyright owners, record labels, film companies, Performance Right Societies, wireless operators like Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, Cingular, Nextel and T-Mobile and cell phone manufacturers.
WNP (wireless number portability) was written into wireless operators policies since 1997, it simply means that, if a consumer is not happy with the service then that person could switch companies and take their phone number and handset, new or old, to another wireless operator for free. When WNP was enforced in Europe a few years ago some wireless operators closed down, because of a very high churn rate, people switched companies due to their dissatisfaction with the service that they were given. WNP will be enforced in the United States on November 23rd 2003.
"We are in our early stages, but based on the research from our previous test site, in which it generated close to half a million unique visitors, 35,000 average visitors a week and 5,000 per day within the duration of 2 and half months. We have built a better mousetrap, because within six (6) hours of the new web site being up we received 55,000 hits and over the weekend we accumulated 150,000 without any promotion and advertisement and orders were placed. We are poised for strategic partnerships and expansion funding," said Jason Wint.

"This elegant evening not only celebrates one of the world's greatest singers, but increases awareness and raises funds to help stop an epidemic that is taking the life out of our communities around the world," says Pernessa Seele, CEO and Founder of The Balm In Gilead.
Ms. Nancy Wilson is the evening's guest star performer. Her career spans more than four decades during which she recorded for Capitol records and was second only to the Beatles in sales, surpassing other Capitol artists including Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee and the Beach Boys. Today, the Grammy-winning artist is in demand for concerts around the world. One of the evening's highlights will be Ms. Wilson's musical medley tribute to the legendary Lena Horne.
This gala is the organization's first benefit since 1996. "Jessye Norman Sings For The Healing of AIDS" was presented at the Riverside Church in New York and included among its special guests Whoopi Goldberg, Elton John and Maya Angelou. The television airing of Jessye Norman Sings For The Healing of AIDS was an Emmy-award winning PBS broadcast special.
The Balm In Gilead, established in 1989, is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization with an international mission to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS throughout the African Diaspora by building the capacity of faith communities to provide AIDS education and support networks for all people living and affected by HIV/AIDS. The organization currently works in five African countries addressing the devastation of HIV/AIDS. The Balm In Gilead's pioneering achievements have enabled thousands of churches to become leaders in preventing HIV by providing comprehensive educational programs and offering compassionate support to encourage those infected to seek and maintain treatment.

WARM SPIRIT, network marketing with soul
One could compare Warm Spirits' growth to that of African-American female millionaire Madame C.J. Walker's hair care empire nearly 100 years ago. With emphasis on the advancement of women of color, WARM SPIRIT's steady rise and recent boom in sales proves they're a company to watch. Nadine Thompson attributes her company's tremendous success to their exceptional, carefully-tested products and to their mission. "Our objective was to build a company that empowered African American women - both spiritually and financially. We wanted to provide a solid foundation and a pair of wings."
In creating Warm Spirit, Ms. Thompson sought to provide self-care products that addressed the skin and hair care needs of African Americans, as well as to provide an opportunity for African American women to prosper as entrepreneurs. Founded in 1999, Warm Spirit has evolved from a 6-person company into a community of almost 5000 culturally diverse and dynamic direct-sales consultants nation wide. While continuing to serve and attend to the needs of women of color, Warm Spirit products are sold and used with tremendous enthusiasm by women and men of all colors.
Developed by a global exchange of herbalists, scientists, aromatherapists and healers, Warm Spirit offers over 125 products that range from skin, body and hair care, holistic remedies, dietary supplements, therapeutic teas, shower gels and lotions, to a men's line and a baby line. Thompson notes, "Warm Spirit is a pathway to economic success. It is a pathway to personal growth and achievement, and, frankly, it is a pathway to the pleasure and beauty of a healthy and cared for body and self.
