One of the world's most timeless and universal tales of love and betrayal. Shakespeare's tragic masterpiece begins in Venice, Italy. Senator Brabantio's beautiful daughter, Desdemona, has secretly married Othello, a Moorish general whom Iago begrudgingly serves as ensign. Having recently been passed over for a promotion by Othello, Iago calmly and methodically plots his revenge. When word arrives that a Turkish attack of Cyprus is imminent, the army sails off to defend Cyprus. Iago seizes the opportunity to exact retribution by deceiving the trusting Othello into believing that his new wife is unfaithful. As the story unfurls across the Mediterranean Sea, envy and deceit spiral into epic tragedy. Said artistic director Bonnie J. Monte, "The Shakespeare Theatre is thrilled to bring this great masterpiece to life, and we are especially pleased to have Scott Wentworth in the director's seat once again. The cast is superb, and we are very proud that American Express continues to be a major and loyal supporter of our fall production, which draws a large student audience each year." The Cast Raphael Nash Thompson makes his Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey debut in the title role of OTHELLO. He is not new to the character, however, having appeared as Othello in two off-Broadway productions including the Riverside Shakespeare Theatre's, opposite F. Murray Abraham as Iago. He also performed as Avery Brooks's stand-by in OTHELLO at The Shakespeare Theatre in the Nation's Capital. Mr. Thompson's impressive background in classical theatre includes ROMEO AND JULIET, MACBETH, RICHARD III, THE TEMPEST and THE WINTER'S TALE, among others. His New York City credits include Ensemble Studio Theatre, La MaMa, E.T.C., Lincoln Centre Theatre and Vineyard Theatre. Among his film credits are SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER and CLOCKERS, as well as the Academy Award-nominated SPEED FOR THESPIANS. He has also appeared on N.B.C.'s THIRD WATCH and Showtime's SOUL FOOD. As the infamous villain Iago, audience favorite Paul Mullins returns for his thirteenth season with the company. Having appeared as Roderigo in The Shakespeare Theatre's last production of OTHELLO, in 1993, the upcoming OTHELLO will mark Mullins's 25th production with The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. An acclaimed actor and director who this summer received rave reviews for his direction of Shakespeare's rarely-produced KING JOHN, Mr. Mullins was last seen on The Shakespeare Theatre's stage as the flamboyant Marco the Magnificent in CARNIVAL!. His other acting credits with the company include Andrey in THREE SISTERS; Neschastlivsev in THE FOREST, Charles in BLITHE SPIRIT, Leontes in THE WINTER'S TALE, Lenny in THE HOMECOMING and Gloumov in DIARY OF A SCOUNDREL, among many others. Regionally he has performed at Steppenwolf, The Shakespeare Theatre in the Nation's Capital, Yale Repertory Theatre, Portland Stage, Indiana Repertory Theatre and American Stage. Caralyn Kozlowski appears as Othello's wife, the innocent Desdemona. She returns for her third season, following a winning turn as Irina in Chekhov's THREE SISTERS in 2001, and previously as Light and Mother Tyl in THE BLUE BIRD and Olivia in TWELFTH NIGHT. Among her other credits are Athena in the off-Broadway production of THE ODYSSEY, Olga in THREE SISTERS with the TheAter Company and the recurring role of Linda on N.B.C.'s THIRD WATCH. Musical credits include Polly in THE THREEPENNY OPERA and creating the role of Estella in the world premier of John Jakes's and Mel Marvin's GREAT EXPECTATIONS. Caralyn made her film debut in PRACTICAL MAGIC in the flashback role of Nicole Kidman's and Sandra Bullock's mother. Having previously appeared as Rosalind in AS YOU LIKE IT (1999), Jennifer VanDyck returns to The Shakespeare Theatre as Iago's wife, Emilia. Bloomfield, NJ - In an unprecedented form of artistic freedom and personal expression, author, Delta Sigma Theta member, and ex music industry veteran, Audra P. Jackson writes "My Mommy Is A Delta", the first and only children's book introducing Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to children, releasing on October 27th. "We view this as an unprecedented act because never before has information about any African American sorority or fraternity been published for the general public in a children's book," says Sharon Lettman, owner of PNP Communications, a marketing and publicity firm in Tallahassee, Florida. The book is being published by Fresh Publishing whose appropriately purported mission statement is "setting trends in the publishing industry." Fresh Publishing's children's books division, "Teach Me Greek", will teach and educate young children and youth about the positive influences of sororities and fraternities and their historical contribution to African American culture and history as we know it today. The first-ever children's book series will chronicle the nine existing, also known as the "Divine 9" African American greek letter organizations in an inspiring light that will make young children proud of their heritage. Other titles in the series will include: My Mommy is an AKA, My Mommy is a Sigma Gamma Rho, My Mommy is a Zeta, My Daddy is a Kappa, My Daddy is an Omega, My Daddy is an Alpha, My Daddy is an Iota Phi Theta, and My Daddy is a Phi Beta Sigma which are scheduled for an early 2004 release.
"My Mommy Is A Delta" is a beautifully charming and a warmly chronicled history of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, done in a cute, yet informative manner. The storyline is warm, set in little Ashley's first grade class where her assignment is to do a report on an organization that does positive things for the community. The characters are adorable and throughout the book the reader will be mesmerized with the vibrant color. Sample text from the story include "I hope to make a difference in the world like the Deltas" and "on holidays such as Thanksgiving the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority give out turkeys to the less fortunate." "My Mommy Is A Delta", will provide a periodical heirloom for the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority to introduce the organization to their children, who as all Deltas pray will one day become Delta's themselves. It will also act as a historical book for any culture. The 45 page narrative includes lots of colors and positive images of the 90 year organization in an easy to read children's book for little girls ranging in ages from 2-10 years old. The retail price is $16.95 + $4.95 S/H. Interested consumers can visit the website at www.mymommyisadelta.com or order the book 24 hours a day at 1-866-302-2669.

East Orange, NJ - (9/25/03). Just Us Books, a leading independent publisher of children's books that focus on Black experiences, history and culture, will celebrate its 15th anniversary this year. The company began with a pre-anniversary event, "Salute to Black Heroes in Science" held this April. Festivities will continue with "Passing It On," an anniversary gala on Friday, October 10 at the Friar Tuck Inn in Cedar Grove, NJ, and a free children's book fair featuring award-winning authors and illustrators on Saturday, October 11 in East Orange, NJ. More than a decade and a half ago, Just Us Books founders Wade and Cheryl Hudson were parents on a desperate search for children's books that reflected the diversity of Black history, heritage and experiences. Disappointed by the limited number they found, the couple embarked upon a mission: to produce the kind of positive, vibrant Black-interest books that they wanted for their own two children. To fulfill that mission in 1988 the couple founded their own publishing company: Just Us Books. |
|
The success of the first title AFRO-BETS ABC Book and others that followed helped to prove the viability of the Black-interest children's book market. In the years that followed, mainstream publishers began publishing and widely distributing more of these books as well. The independent press that helped to pioneer the industry's growth has marked a number of milestones. In 1992, the company entered into a production partnership with educational publishing leader Scholastic, Inc. that has resulted in a number of top selling titles. Many of Just Us Books' titles have been recognized with prestigious industry honors as well. These include the Publishers Marketing Association's Ben Franklin Award for illustration given to Bright Eyes, Brown Skin in 1991 and From a Child's Heart in 1994; and BlackBoard's Children's Book of the Year awarded to Come By Here, Lord in 2003. The company has also received a number of honors in recognition of its success and contributions to children's literature. Just Us Books was named "Small Business Pioneer of the Year" in 1997 by Income Opportunities magazine, and was given the New Jersey Small Business Success Award in 1998. |

In 1997, Just Us Books brought together some of the most celebrated authors and illustrators in publishing, including Gwendolyn Brooks, Virginia Hamilton, Walter Dean Myers, Jeanne Moutousammy-Ashe, Leo and Diane Dillon, Fred and Patricia McKissack, for a celebration of the Black family. The result was the award-winning anthology, In Praise of Our Fathers and Our Mothers. Fifteen years after its founding, Just Us Books remains one of the nation's few Black-owned book publishers and the only one exclusively dedicated to producing Black-interest books for children. The independent press continues to make strides in publishing, this February releasing the third book in its best-selling Black Heroes series: Scientists, Healers and Inventors by Wade Hudson. Fall 2003 will see the release of five new titles: Follow up Letters to Santa From Kids Who Never Got a Response by celebrated poet and writer Tony Medina, with images by R. Gregory Christie; The March on Washington, by award-winning author James Haskins; Kid Caramel Book 3: Mess at Loch Ness, by Dwayne Ferguson; Poetry from the Masters: The Pioneers by Wade Hudson; and Dear Corinne, Tell Somebody! Love, Annie by Mari Evans in paperback. Just Us Books also announced this year that it will be expanding its list of books for young adults. "Just Us Books' 15th anniversary is not just a celebration of our success as a company," says Wade Hudson, president and CEO of Just Us Books. "It's a celebration of 15 years of Black children and all children reading, learning, growing, and affirming African-American heritage." Based in East Orange, New Jersey, Just Us Books' titles range from concept books for the Pre-Kindergarten age to novels for middle readers and young adults. South Orange, NJ - (9/18/03). Many African-Americans become the first Black to achieve a unique title or award. In the seemingly quiet backdrop of their success, they've often traveled a noisy and bumpy road. In her new book, "Chicken on a Leash: Lessons in Strength of Mind", author Dorothea Grimes-Frederick [herself a 'first Black'], gives an uncensored glimpse into the potholed path traveled by one gutsy woman of color during her journey from here to there: here, a woman with a metal plate in her head; there, boys in their hoods; everywhere, preying-sex-praying; everybody, Calling Earl. And everyday, her mind visiting places that her body had long abandoned. Grimes-Frederick creates an entertaining and exciting look into the fictional life of one such woman, Susan Raleigh. The story is told through the pages of Susan s diary entries, which begin in childhood with her sitting at the front of a segregated bus, and end with the destruction of the World Trade Center. The book gets additional points of view from Susan's sister, a friend, her husband, a "dreamer" and even her dog. |
||
In all, Susan Raleigh provides 30 personality-shaping stories and lessons, which she characterizes as "Lessons in Strength of Mind". The author provides a collection of tumultuous and exhilarating events all told in the raw including a would-be rapist, witnessing child abuse, voodoo, killer lions in South Africa, tempting the forbidden, a past in the CIA, flirting with Republican politics, addicts, a mortician, and a bounty hunter bent on collecting Eve s biblical debt---her rib. "Chicken on a Leash" will ruffle some feathers, set a few teeth on edge, give a taste of controversial moments, yet leave the reader saying Amen!

Vineland, NJ - (9/18/03). A former shoe maker, Jim Watkins,76, was always as interested in his customers' souls as in the soles he was repairing. Watkins talks about growing up in Macon, Ga., the oldest of 8 children. "We went to church regularly and I sang in the choir, my name was on the church roll for 40 years and I wasn't saved. I would hear the preacher say come and join the church and that's what I did - I went and joined the church, but I thank GOD for his call on my life and saving me new year's eve night 1978/79," Watkins stated. Watkins said "In church that new year's eve night the preacher talked about having an intimate relationship with GOD and knowing him, something I never heard before. That was the beginning of a beautiful relationship with GOD our father; shortly after that the LORD moved me from Chester, PA to Millville, NJ where I read and studied the words of the LORD. In 1983, Watkins was ordained a deacon in second pilgrim Baptist church in Cedar Grove, NJ. "It was in the latter part of 1985 that the LORD called me into the prison ministry, and when he called me I didn't want to go into any prison where all kind of people go; but now I thank GOD for the calling because he let me live long enough to see fruits from my labor." Watkins said, "I had been asked if I would visit an inmate at Bayside state prison. The Rev. Paul Pedrick was the Chaplin at the prison, and when he came in to have his shoes repaired, I asked him if he knew this inmate. He told me that this man worked in his office and GOD worked it out, and the rest is history. I went to |

Staff Writer see the inmate and gave him my testimony. He ask me if i'd come in to minister to four or five other brothers. Chaplain Pedrick approved, and after much prayer Watkins began his prison ministry and still goes on Wednesday and Thursday nights and some Saturdays. "There were eight to 10 men who attended in the beginning and it built to as many as 130," according to Watkins. "Now we range from 35 to 80 and we have church; We sing and praise God. It's a blessing to see how some of the men have grown and their lives has been change. The services last for about two hours and are attended mostly by a capacity crowd." Watkins and his wife own a beauty supply & salon store where Watkins at the age of 76 is still working, making custom design hair pieces, weave-in-nets, etc. "I Do Thank God for my life, health ,strength, peace, joy, and his love he placed in my heart to continue working and serving his people.
