History of Mother's Day

Past Winners

Grand Prize Winner

Monserrate Santiago of Selden, New York

Hello my name is Darlene and I would like to enter my mom Monserrate Santiago in the contest for this reason. I feel she is the best mom in the world only because she gave up her whole life to raise us, and what makes her different from other moms you ask. Well my biological mother died on my 10th birthday from breast cancer. Not only did my grandmother take care of her till her last day on this earth. But from that day on my grandmother dedicated her life to us, she quit her job and stayed home to raise two trying teens. We put her through, hell made her shed many tears and gave her mingrains but she never gave up on us.

Till this day she is here for us doing whatever she can and helps us with our kids. I feel my mom is the strongest woman I have ever met. I look up to her and respect her as a woman. I appreciate everything she has given up and done for both my brother and I . So on Mother's Day this year, I want her to know how special she really is and recognize her for her stregnth and wisdom above all her courage to raise two teenagers after raising her 5 children. That is the bestest mom in the world. I enter her as a mom not grandmother because we feel she is our mother. Even if she is not picked, she will always be to me the best mom in the world.

First Place Winner

Danny B. Toland's mom of Monroe, Georgia

Dear Sirs,

How can I convince you that my mother is the “ Greatest Mom in the World?”……I can’t really. Any mother who is worth a grain of salt would have her own child choose her as such if she has put anything into the up-bringing of that child. What I’m trying to say is that to truly see the magnificence and meaning that my mother has to me would take years of looking at, and up to, her through my eyes. She is the very definition of the word mother.

She was the one who brought me into this world (and who jokingly states– “the one who can take me out”). She was the firm hand that guided and gently pushed me down life's many paths, yet the same hand that was soft and comforting when that path caused me to stumble. She was the engineer of my moral character, the one who showed me right from wrong. Yet even when I chose wrong, she was never my judge. She was wise enough to know that making the wrong choice is part of attaining the knowledge of how to make the right one. Sure, I’ve had my share of spankings; but Motherhood and Guidance, like any art form, requires the use and implementation of
discipline.

My mother was a favorite of my friends, one of the “cool moms”. I always thought so. She let me grow up and leave the nest, but made sure I had a key in case I wanted to come back. My mother has never had a problem showing her feelings for me or anyone else, a trait I am proud she passed onto me although it has taken most of my years to master the use of that ability. She still, at 33, calls me “doll-baby” and worries if I’m driving in the rain, riding my mountain bike, or any other “adult” activity. When I say I’m not a child she merely replies “ You’re my child, and you always will be”. She has always been there for me; from a baby, to a teenager, to the U.S. Army, through one marriage and one nasty divorce. She never carried me yet her support allowed me to walk with dignity on my own two feet. In my 33 years on this earth she has been the Greatest Mom in the World but along the way she became something that has allowed her to continue being my mother not from outside, but from within the circle of my adult life. My mother became and is my friend. Someone I see on a frequent basis, rather than just at holiday’s.

I can hang out with her, or spend the day running errands with her and just enjoy the company. I’m not sure if these ramblings have convinced you or not that my mother is “The Greatest Mom in the World”. As I stated earlier, it would take many years to show you the reasons I think she is. Besides, she doesn’t need a clock, or a carousel, or a ribbon to know she is the greatest in my eyes. And to a real mother, her child’s love for her is the only prize she will ever want. My mother may not win your contest, but when she reads this, she’ll
feel as if she has won the greatest prize of all; a child who thought enough of her to believe she could even win it in the first place. I do.

Thank You,
Danny B. Toland Jr.

ON MOTHER'S DAY

Dearest Mum,
For fifty-one years, you have been an immaculate Mother that
any child would love to have as their very Own
For the kindness and many sacrifices that you have
given and made to me and my brothers, is well Known
In your sparkling eyes, mummy, there is always a guiding Light
to teach us good from bad, wrong from Right
You have also been a super mum to my
Doris, my beloved Wife
The other precious lady in my Life
Coaching her on your culinary skills and "infecting" Doris on sharing, caring
and being considerate to the less fortunate members of our Society
So we in turn, accord to you every day of the year, filial Piety
But today makes it extra special in that we can further deepen the
bond between all of Us
To pour out our fondest affection to you and place
you above everyone else, because a Mother's Love must always come First
Happy Mother's Day, Mummy, and may you
be blessed with good health Always
As in closing, I will continue to practise what you always tell us
Which is, "Kindness Always Pays"

Sincerely,

Your loving son

Raymond

Delores Bookout, Broken Arrow Oklahoma

My Mom, Delores Bookout is the greatest! She is my celebrity. She has always loved true. She is so talented and gifted. She is a wife, hairdresser, pilot and artist but more than all her talents and gifts she is my mom my best friend!

I am sure all kids feel like there is nothing their mom can't do but I know there is nothing mine can't do. I am 40 years old with two children of my own I know the trials and pains she has endured she always smiles and remains positive. She is giving, caring and loving and would be there for you in a heartbeat.

My mom is not Rembrandt, she paints and sculpts at home at her kitchen table she has made some wonderful pieces. My Mom expresses herself with clay and paintings. In Texas, she received a special Diploma in Commercial Art and drafting She won numerous awards and 4 first place ones. She has been sculpting for three years and is self-taught. Winning several awards with polymer clay sculptures,

She sculpts with her heart & hands. My husband was in an accident in 1999. He is paralyzed from the chest down my mom was heart broken for our whole family. She did not know what she could do to make us better. She sat down with her clay she began sculpting the most beautiful life size Jesus. I know then she received the answer for us all, just have faith. It has been almost two years now since the accident my mom and dad are moving closer this year. I look so forward to having her near me again. She is 4 hours away now in Broken Arrow Oklahoma. She is moving to Deleon Texas.

I know my mom is a celebrity everything she touches has her heart and love in it. I Love my mom so much and don't know what I would ever do without her.

Sincerely,
