WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 /PRNewsire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Global Family Congressional District Program:
The question is, will the sound of squabble in Washington DC drown out a pretty compelling call to action staged by two activist moms -- one Democrat, one Republican, one Unitarian, one Scientologist, who believe that taking a peaceful stand for peace can be more effective than getting busted for it? That's the theory, anyway.
The first is author and former head writer of soaps Linda Grover who's spent the last ten years working 'like a fool' for the establishment of a universal holiday for all members of the human family (see http://www.gfday.org/ and http://www.globalmothers.org/). She's had a modicum of success, getting a resolution through Congress twice, and the UN General Assembly once, with two dozen heads of state signing on to the idea (including Clinton and Bush) but almost nobody, she says sadly, does more than pay lip service.
The other mother is Bunny Dubin, who feels so strongly about public service that she high-tailed from her home in Pennsylvania on 9/11 and spent 30 days at Ground Zero, supervising non-medical volunteers. Grover and Dubin, friends for several years, teamed up in May to rally the support of world leaders for their children's simple PEACE AND SHARING 101 plan.
The moms are asking families everywhere, starting with those of the world's leaders, to take the following pledge: "During the 101 days between the International Day of Peace on September 21, 2007 and Globalfamily Day on January 1, 2008, I promise I will give more to end hunger and work harder to create peace, both in my own community and in the world -- this year focusing on Africa, especially Darfur. I make this pledge because I want to help demonstrate that a globalized world can also be a compassionate and caring world, and that by working together as one global family, we can better meet the challenges humanity will surely face in the years to come."
"What politician couldn't agree to that?" Dubin asks.
Earlier this year the "globalmothers' joined up with Africare, and with Frank Liu, president of the World Harmony Foundation. Father of a child named Harmony, Liu also uses peaceful techniques to create peace. When the UN's 60th anniversary was approaching, he designed and built a 1500-pound World Harmony Bell which was rung by Kofi Annan. It's made of recycled weapons donated by the Chinese military, and scrap metal gathered by children.
The two moms and the dad have one powerful ally. Congressman John Conyers, Jr., Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Dean of the Congressional Black Caucus, Chief sponsor of Martin Luther King Day, and co-founder of Global Family Day, yesterday challenged every Member of Congress to sign the Peace and Sharing 101 pledge, and then lead their congressional districts in 101 days of accelerated peace and sharing.
But what if the peaceful tactics don't work? Grover, grandmother of seven, says with a smile that she's "not really contemplating streaking the Capitol."
"But of course we're not taking any option off the table," adds Dubin, jokingly.
So far, apart from Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul, most U.S. presidential contenders in Congress have been silent on the subject. Ring, ring, ring -- are you there, Washington? Can you hear us now?
