Pelosi: Democrats' New Direction Rewards Work, Not Just Wealth

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following release was issued toady from the office of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi:

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on the tepid jobs report released today that showed only 51,000 jobs, just one third of those needed to keep pace with population growth, were created in September, while real wages have remained stagnant over the last three years. This week, House Democratic leaders are delivering major speeches throughout the country to outline Democrats' commitment to restoring the economic security of middle-class families, with speeches today by Congressmen Rahm Emanuel in Chicago, James Clyburn in Cincinnati, and Charles Rangel in Princeton, N.J.:

"President Bush and Republicans continue to claim that the economy is on the right track, with President Bush saying today's jobs report is 'more good news.' This once again demonstrates how out of touch the Republicans are, because the U.S. economy is not delivering for middle-class families.

"Corporate profits are up, but the incomes of middle-class families have declined for five straight years. People are working more productively than ever but their purchasing power is down. The cost of everything from housing, to health care, to energy is making it harder than ever to make ends meet, tightening the middle-class squeeze. The Dow is up, but people's retirements are less secure than ever. This economy is making the super-rich richer, and leaving middle-class American families further behind.

"Republicans have no plan for middle-class families and the kitchen table issues they are facing. Instead, they continue to deliver tax subsidies to Big Oil, tax breaks for the wealthy and record deficits for American taxpayers.

"Democrats are offering a New Direction that rewards work, not just wealth, and expands opportunity and economic security to all Americans. We will raise the minimum wage, repeal current tax incentives that serve to export American jobs overseas, and enact middle-class tax cuts to spur economic growth and encourage businesses to invest in research and development."

Democrats United: Kick-off Final Month of Campaign Activities Saturday DNC Launches National Voter Protection Hotline

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- On Saturday, Oct. 7, Democrats will kick-off the final month of voter contact activities at Democratic National Organizing Day events across the country, building on the success of ongoing critical Get-Out- the-Vote operations for Election Day.

At more than 600 events across the country, Democrats will contact voters, recruit volunteers and distribute literature promoting the new direction Democrats offer America. The Democratic National Committee's (DNC) toll-free national voter assistance hotline, 1-888-DEM-VOTE, will go live Saturday, which will help ensure that voters across the country can vote and have that vote counted. The hotline, available in all states and in English and Spanish, provides automated poll location information to voters and gives voters an opportunity to leave a message or be connected to a live person who can help resolve problems.

In addition to the national voter hotline, the DNC is putting election protection staff in 15 key states and our National Lawyers Council will deploy thousands of lawyers to the polls nationally. These efforts are part of the DNC's ongoing comprehensive plan to help Americans register to vote, learn how and where to cast their ballot and provide assistance to overcoming Republican-led efforts to suppress voter turnout for the November elections.

"Americans are ready for a new direction, one that puts the interests of the American people ahead of the interests of the Republican Party," said Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean. "Across the country, Democrats will kick-off the final campaign push by working to contact three million voters who don't always turn out in non-presidential elections but are key to a Democratic victory in November. We are also launching 1- 888-DEM-VOTE to make sure that every eligible voter can vote and have their vote counted. Democrats will deliver our message of an America that works for everyone, where hard work is respected and health care, college and a secure retirement are within every American's reach."

Saturday's events will build on the success of the DNC's earlier national organizing days. In April, 10,000 volunteers knocked on one million doors. In July, it contacted two million targeted voters. And on October 7th, its goal is to contact three million drop-off voters. These events directly benefit Democratic candidates up and down the ballot and candidates at every level are participating. Volunteers will distribute literature with the DNC's voter hotline information and the Democratic message for a new direction.

Democrats are united and mobilizing across the country:

Ohio: An expected 2,000 volunteers will help "Turn Around Ohio" by making more than 100,000 voter contacts at 93 events in nearly every of its 88 counties. Candidates at every level will participate, including Democratic Senate Candidate Sherrod Brown, Secretary of State Candidate Jennifer Brunner, State Auditor Candidate Barbara Sykes and targeted Congressional Candidates Zack Space (OH-18) and John Cranley (OH-1).

Arizona: Democrats will gather at 16 Get-Out-the-Vote events across the state and Governor Janet Napolitano, Senate Candidate Jim Pederson and Congressman Pastor, among others, will rally volunteers.

New Jersey: Volunteers will walk neighborhoods and talk about the new direction Democrats offer New Jersey and the country at events across the state. Following the GOTV activities, a rally will take place in Newark featuring Senator Menendez and other elected officials.

Oregon: In Oregon, there are over 40 events scheduled. Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-3) and Congressman Peter DeFazio (OR-4) will join fellow Oregonians from Dallas to The Dalles, from Pendleton to Port Orford and everywhere in between.

DNC: McCain's Double Talk Express Hits Stump for Congressman Who Covered for Foley

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Democratic National Committee (DNC):

On Friday, Oct. 20, Sen. John McCain is scheduled to campaign with NRCC Chairman Tom Reynolds, who is currently embroiled in the GOP cover-up of former Republican Rep. Mark Foley's sexually explicit messages that he sent to under-age House pages. Even after Reynolds was informed about Foley's transgressions, he encouraged Foley to run for a seventh term, gave $5,000 to Foley's campaign, and took $100,000 of Foley's campaign cash for the NRCC rather than investigating the matter further. As the scandal came to light, Reynolds' chief-of-staff worked to keep the media from exposing Foley. Yesterday, McCain called for an independent investigation of the scandal by "credible" people. Instead of campaigning with Reynolds later this month, McCain should cancel his fundraiser for Reynolds and call on Reynolds to tell the truth about his actions in this scandal.

"Senator McCain should put his money where his mouth is and cancel his fundraiser with Congressman Reynolds," said Democratic National Committee Press Secretary Stacie Paxton. "It's hypocritical for Sen. McCain to say one thing about the Foley scandal but then campaign for someone involved in the cover up of the scandal. The Republican leadership continues to be more concerned about doing the right thing to protect their party than they are about doing the right thing to protect our children."

-- McCain Calls for Independent Investigation of Foley Scandal by "Credible" People

McCain called for "Congressional leaders to appoint a panel of 'credible' people to investigate a scandal about inappropriate e- mails and electronic messages sent by former Rep. Mark Foley to teenage pages. (McCain said) 'The institution is under assault right now. We need to move forward quickly and we need to reach conclusions and recommendations about who is responsible.'" (Associated Press, 10/4/06)

-----

McCain Should Start by Calling for an Investigation of Reynolds, Instead of Campaigning With Him

-- Reynolds Was Told About Foley's Inappropriate Contact With Pages

"After a second round of press inquiries in the spring, he (Rep. Alexander) again notified the family and discussed the e- mails with the new majority leader, John Boehner of Ohio, on the House floor during a vote. Alexander said Boehner turned first to Reynolds, the architect of the Republican midterm election strategy. 'I went to Boehner before Reynolds,' Alexander told AP. 'He sent Reynolds to me to talk about it. Within a minute Reynolds and I were talking.'" (Chicago Tribune, 10/3/06)

-- He Still Tried to Talk Foley Out of Resigning

Bob Novak wrote, "A member of the House leadership told me that Foley, under continuous political pressure because of his sexual orientation, was considering not seeking a seventh term this year but that Rep. Tom Reynolds, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), talked him into running." (New York Post, 10/4/06)

-- Then, the NRCC Took $100,000 From Foley in August of 2006.

The NRCC accepted a $100K contribution from Foley's campaign committee. (fec.gov)

Democratic National Committee: A Heckuva Jobs Report for September

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today's latest jobs report only confirms that the Bush economy doesn't work for all hard-working Americans. The economy added only 51,000 jobs in September, according to the Labor Department this morning. The Bush economy has been marked by falling wages and anemic job numbers that don't even keep up with population growth.

"Despite all the election year rhetoric, the facts don't lie; the Bush Economy has failed 80 percent of Americans, and President Bush just cannot manage America's finances," said Democratic National Committee Press Secretary Stacie Paxton. "Parents can't support their families and build a hopeful future for their children in the Bush Economy that is benefiting only the wealthiest, with lousy job growth, falling wages, millions more uninsured and rising poverty.

"Democrats offer a new direction that includes raising the minimum wage, creating good jobs that stay in America, and promoting tax cuts that help the middle class and not special interests."

A Heckuva Jobs Report

Jobs Report Lower Than Forecasted by 72,000. "U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose by an estimated 51,000 in September, the Labor Department said Friday. The increase in payrolls was lower than the 123,000 rise expected by Wall Street economists surveyed by MarketWatch." (CBS Marketwatch, 10/6/06)

Manufacturing Continuing Its Long Slide. The manufacturing sector lose 19,000 jobs in September, the third straight monthly decline, according to BLS. The nation has lost manufacturing jobs during 57 of the 69 months of the Bush Presidency. The nearly three million manufacturing jobs lost since January 2001 exceed the total lost in the 22 years before Bush took office. (CBS Marketwatch, 10/6/06; BLS)

Americans Not Benefiting from the Bush Economy

Household Income Declined By Nearly $1,300 Under Bush; Wage And Salary Increases Don't Cover Inflation. Although median household income increased by $509 last year, median household income has declined by $1,273 under the Bush Administration. And the failure of wage and salary increases to cover inflation has meant a real reduction of median income between 2000 and 2005 of 2.7 percent for households. (U.S. Census Bureau, 8/29/06; Table A-1; Center for American Progress, 8/29/06)

Full-Time Workers Suffer The Most. The decline in workers' real income was especially pronounced for full-time, year-round workers. For men, median incomes fell by $774 from 2004-2005, and they have seen their incomes drop by $842 during the Bush Administration. For women, median incomes fell by $427 in the last year alone. Incomes in this group fell to their lowest levels since 1997 for men, and lowest level since 2000 for women. (U.S. Census Bureau, 8/30/05; Table A-2; Center for American Progress, 8/29/06)

African Americans And Latino Household Incomes Have Declined by Approximately $2,000 Under Bush. Real median household income decreased between 2004 and 2005 for African Americans by $757. Black households had the lowest median income, at $30,858 - down by $2,772 since Bush took office. Median income for Hispanic households was $35,967 in 2005 -down by $1,631 since Bush took office. (U.S. Census Bureau, 8/29/06; Table A-1)

Increasing Number of African Americans Take Low-Wage Jobs. Blacks were the only race/ethnic group to see a growth in poverty-level wage earners over the 2000-05 period. This growth in low-wage work occurred among both men and women. (EPI State of Working America 2006/2007)

Manufacturing Sector Continues to Flounder; 2.9 Million Manufacturing Jobs Lost Since 2001. About 2.9 million jobs have been lost during the Bush Administration. The long employment slide in this key sector is also evident in the hourly wage trends of blue-collar workers. Despite the fact that manufacturing productivity has soared since 2000, up 29 percent, wage growth has slowed sharply. (EPI, 9/1/06; BLS 10/06)

Median Income for Non-Elderly Households Declined for 5th Consecutive Year. Median income for non-elderly households (those headed by someone under 65) fell again in 2005, declining by $275. Median income for non-elderly households declined for the fifth consecutive year and was $2,000 lower in 2005 than in the recession year of 2001. (CBPP, 9/1/06)

More than 83 percent Of The New Jobs Created Since August 2003 Are In The Service Sector, Which Pays An average Hourly Wage That Is Lower Than The National Average. More than 4.3 million of the jobs created are in the service sector with an average wage that is 34 cents lower than the national average. More than 363,000 of these jobs are temporary jobs. More than 1.2 million of these jobs were in low-paying domestic industries, such as wait staff in restaurants and bars and retail workers. This means that more than 30 percent of the new jobs created are temporary jobs or in low-paying domestic industries. (Democratic Leadership Staff Analysis of BLS Data, 9/06)

People Who Lose Their Jobs Are Unemployed Longer. In September of 2006, 18.2 percent of the 7.1 million unemployed were jobless for at least half-a-year. Historically, when unemployment has been between 4.5 percent and 5.5 percent, the average long-term jobless share has been 11.7 percent; in this recovery, when unemployment has been within those bounds, the long-term jobless rate has been 19.5 percent. (EPI, 9/1/06; BLS 10/06)

Senate GOP Blocked Minimum Wage Vote For 9th Time; Congressional Pay Up $30,000 During Same Period. "The Republican- controlled Senate smothered a proposed election-year increase in the minimum wage Wednesday, rejecting Democratic claims it was past time to boost the $5.15 hourly pay floor that has been in effect for nearly a decade... The Senate vote marked the ninth time since 1997 that Democrats there have proposed -- and Republicans have blocked -- an increase in the minimum wage... Kennedy also said lawmakers' annual pay has risen by roughly $30,000 since the last increase in the minimum wage." (AP, 6/22/06)

The Record of Republican Fiscal Mismanagement

Record Surpluses to Record Deficits. Republicans have turned President Clinton's projected 10-year $5.6 billion surplus into a nearly $3 trillion deficit. When this Administration took office, it inherited a projected ten-year surplus (2002-2011) of $5.6 trillion. Based on a realistic estimate of the President's policies, that surplus has now become a $3.3 trillion deficit over the same period of time, a dramatic fiscal reversal of $8.9 trillion. (House Budget Committee, 2/2006)
