Janet's Mid-Career Crisis: What Makes an '04 Diva?

Members Only Site

by Phyllis Douglass

Im a die-hard Janet fan . . . at least I thought I was . . . until a couple of albums ago when she decided that Playboy poses on/in her album covers were more important than her musical artistry. We all know the Super Bowl fiasco was blown way out of preportion; however, because of the sex kitten image she has been feeding us over the last few years, we couldnt even believe it was truly a costume malfunction 100%. She says it was, and since we are her fans, we believe her.

We know Penny had to grow up, its just ironic that the Janet from back in the Rhythm Nation days would be offended by the Janet of Velvet Rope, Its All for You, and now Damita Jo. The old Janet took offense when her older sister, LaToya, posed nude for Playboy. The new Janet, would be like go, ahead, girl, Im right with you.

Radio hosts have been picking on her because she sounds like shes whispering throughout her whole album. Crazy enough, the song has grown on me; however, the video should have landed in the trash. I just want to slap her out of her love-sick trance. We expect better from Ms. Jackson, the entertainer. Its not like shes the worlds strongest singer. We love her because she entertained us, so why would we rush to our TV sets to see her moaning into the camera walking endlessly into the arms of Jermaine Dupri.

Janet Jackson Hosts Saturday Night Live

(3/9/04). Pop diva Janet Jackson will host "Saturday Night Live," on April 10. The live late-night satirical show will be her first TV appearance since the Super Bowl halftime show fiasco. Ten years ago she was a musical guest on SNL. Marci Klein, producer, has no regrets about booking Jackson after the costume controversy. She says, "she's a huge star and this is a huge booking. We are just thrilled."

BLACK LEADERS EXPRESS OUTRAGE OVER ABC-TV SELECTION OF JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AS CO-HOST OF "MOTOWN 45" SPECIAL

Los Angeles, CA - (BlackNews.com/BlackPR.com) - (2/19/04). A coalition of prominent African American organizations and leaders are demanding that the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) remove entertainer Justin Timberlake as co-host of "Motown 45," the upcoming ABC-TV special. Outraged over the selection of Timberlake to co-host this musical celebration, the coalition is launching a national e-mail, fax and phone campaign against ABC to protest Timberlake's inclusion in the Motown tribute.

Motown has a proud and historic legacy of being one of America's greatest musical institutions. It has launched the careers of some of the most prominent African American artists in recording history including Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Commodores, Lionel Ritchie, The Tempations and the Jackson Five. "The selection of Timberlake as co-host of this Motown special is a cultural insult to the black community," says Najee Ali, Executive Director, Project Islamic HOPE. "This special, celebrating the success of the legendary music label, should not be compromised in the pursuit of a crossover audience."

In addition, Timberlake's recent handling of the Super Bowl incident has been met with harsh criticism in the black community. He immediately distanced himself following his performance with Janet Jackson and failed to accept his responsibility in the "wardrobe malfunction." "I mean I was completely shocked and appalled, and all I could say was, 'Oh, my God, Oh, my God,'" Timberlake told reporters at a recent Grammy rehearsal.

"We cannot support Justin Timberlake co-hosting Motown 45," says Ali. "We are asking concerned citizens to call, fax and email ABC-TV in protest."

TURNING POINT MAGAZINE CRITICIZES CBS, VIACOM, AND GRAMMYS FOR TREATING JANET JACKSON UNFAIRLY

By Pat Means

Today's news (2/5/04) reports that The Recording Academy has dropped Janet Jackson from Sunday's Grammy Awards show - while keeping a performance by Justin Timberlake. The Grammys will be aired on CBS Sunday, Feb. 8 at 8:00 pm.

I was as shocked as anyone about what transpired during last week's Super Bowl halftime show, and I do not condone the behavior displayed by both Ms. Jackson AND Mr. Timberlake.

However, the purpose of this letter is to address the issue of fairness. As an African American and as a woman, I cannot help but address the sexist, and possibly racist response of The Recording Academy and CBS.

It seems like the same old story: Punish the woman - support the man. Hit hard the person of color - slap the wrist of the white. The message behind this action is chilling.

If you are at all concerned about this decision by The Recording Industry and CBS, please download the attached letter and fax to RIAA, CBS and Viacom (parent company of CBS) immediately. You should also call the organizations to express your concern. (If you have e-mail addresses for the presidents of the entities - use them and pass them along)

The message that should be delivered? Either allow Janet Jackson to appear on the Grammy Awards show OR dump Justin Timberlake also.

Let's not argue among ourselves about what Ms. Jackson and Mr. Timberlake did - and I know we face so many other issues of inequality - let's stand up against this unequal treatment!

"Black History: Pass It On" Profiles Famous and Lesser-Known Black Leaders

Washington, DC - (2/6/04). BET has collaborated with music superstar Janet Jackson on a 10-part series of special Black History Month vignettes profiling famous as well as lesser-known African Americans. Entitled "Black History: Pass It On", the spectacular campaign features Ms. Jackson in an inspirational tribute designed to share noteworthy aspects about the lives and historic contributions made by these individuals. The series began running on BET this week, and will continue throughout February.

"Janet is a believer in the individual and collective greatness of African-American men and women," said BET President and Chief Operating Officer Debra Lee. "We commend her for taking the time and showing such passion in each vignette. Her sincerity and true commitment to the cause of spotlighting great African Americans make this an absolutely fabulous Black History Month campaign."

Created in-house by BET's own Creative Services department, the spots feature Ms. Jackson clad in classic black, seated against a textured contemporary backdrop with no music or the clutter of special effects. Her tone is serious and focused, with the air and diction of a seasoned lecturer. The packages are a striking contrast to Ms. Jackson's edgy and sexy persona depicted in her concert performances and music videos. The framing and camera work keep the focus on the content of Ms. Jackson's messages, and not just on the diva herself. Award-winning producers/directors Lana Garland and Penny McDonald produced the campaign.

"We certainly hope that the work Ms. Jackson has done on these very uplifting and informing spots will get as much attention as anything else she's done," said Lee. "Far too often, the media wants to paint folks with one brush. Yes, Ms. Jackson, like all great artists, pushes the envelope. But equal to those actions are her passion and dedication to getting positive messages out."

"I was truly moved by the experience of honoring individuals who have played such important and influential roles in African-American culture and in the history of our country," said Ms. Jackson. "Every freedom and opportunity that we enjoy today can be attributed to the sacrifices of great African Americans like these. What I found particularly pleasing was the diversity of the profiles, with some of them being very familiar while others were lesser known. Yet, all of them were meaningful contributors and exemplary in their own right."

The series features the following African-American historical figures:

  • August Wilson - Noted playwright and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner
  • Bayard Rustin - Civil rights organizer once arrested for sitting in the "Whites Only" section at the front of a transit bus 16 years before Rosa Parks' famed incident
  • Bessie Coleman - Former manicurist who became America's first female aviator
  • Gordon Parks - Award-winning photographer, journalist, composer and filmmaker
  • Greensboro Four - African-American teenagers whose sit-in at a restaurant refusing to serve them was a catalyst in the Civil Rights Movement
  • Harriet Tubman - Former slave turned Union Army soldier and freedom fighter
  • Marion Anderson - Opera singer who sang before thousands on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial because Constitution Hall denied her an opportunity because of her race
  • Paul Robeson - Athlete, scholar, internationally-renown actor, singer and activist
  • Sidney Poitier - Actor and the first African-American to win an Academy Award
  • Slaves - Oscar Dunn, Anna Julia Cooper and Henry O. Flipper, high achievers who were born as slaves
***EDITORS' NOTE: A sample of the new BET Black History Month campaign featuring Janet Jackson can be seen on the home page of BET.com at www.bet.com starting at 6 p.m. EST today.
