There's Still Time to Create Warmth This Winter

Insulate now to save money and prevent one-half ton of greenhouse gas emissions per attic, per year1

TOLEDO, Ohio · December 06, 2007 / PRNewswire / – Want to save money, save energy and save the planet? Head to the attic. Sixty million American homes are estimated to have under-insulated attics. Those homes not only face increased energy costs of up to nearly 47.32 percent higher this winter, they're also emitting one-half ton more CO2 EVERY year1 than their properly-insulated neighbors. In the atmosphere, that's about an average blimp-full3 of CO2 emissions being released per block of homes each year.

With the Department of Energy recommending an average of R-value 49 for attics, Owens Corning (NYSE: OC), the makers of PINK insulation, advises that an attic have a minimum of 15.5 inches of fiberglass batt insulation or 18 inches of blown insulation.

"It's simple to determine if you have enough, and it's easy to add more if you don't," said Gale Tedhams, director of sustainability for Owens Corning. "Go up to your attic. If you can see the wood beams of your attic floor, you don't have enough.

"If we all insulated to the Department of Energy standard of R-49, imagine the difference we could make across the nation – attic by attic, year after year – in saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions."

Homeowners can visit www.insulateyouratticnow.com to learn how to save on home heating and cooling bills, measure the attic and find out where to buy insulation.

1Savings will vary depending on your location and weather conditions. Calculations of energy savings based on a 1700 square foot, single story home, with base case insulation and air leakage levels equivalent to the average home built in 1965. 3The US could save up to three million blimps full of CO2 emissions (the average blimp holds approximately 200,000 cubic feet of gas) if all under insulated attics in the US were insulated to the DOE standard. Estimated 60 million under-insulated homes in 2006 based upon a 2003 Harvard School of Public Health study, The Public Health Benefits of Insulation Retrofits in Existing Housing in the United States.

AIR FILTERS

Air Filter Review

by Jackson Neshah

People who suffer from chronic breathing conditions such as Emphysema and COPD should be careful when buying an air filter system. These conditions are serious life threatening health problems that can be aggravated with the use of inferior poor performance air filters.

A good air filter should clearly remove indoor allergens such as smoke, odor, gas, dust and mould through quality filtration. An excellent air filter is that which is well equipped and capable of cleaning the air in the room efficiently, and at record time. There are very expensive air filters, but they are worth their price because they are very efficient for cleaning your indoor air. Some air filters are equipped to decontaminate air up to 50% better than less expensive makes. These high-end air filters produce excellent filtration plus, they are equipped with filter cartridge change indicators. Note that in spite of what the manual says about cartridge longevity, a cartridge’s life span will depend on air quality

There are different types of filter cartridges. There are gas filters and carbon filters. An air filter’s performance level is dependent on the filter cartridge. The finer the filter, the better air quality it will produce. The best filters are the ones that can capture very tiny particles as small as 0.3 microns.

Hepa rated air filters are regarded as the most efficient, yet gas molecules are too small for most Hepa air filters, if they are not equipped with activated carbon or charcoal that is capable of trapping gas molecules. Most Hepa rated air filters are either pleated media or electrostatic filters, they work very well to remove fine particles from the air, but the collecting plate requires frequent cleaning for sustained good result.

Air Filter: How To Buy Them

by Kerry Rodden

An air filter is a tool that is used to filter air through it to pull out toxins, dust, dander and other air contaminants. Some provide for all of these things while others are designed for a specific purpose. One thing you must know about these filters is that they are all designed for their own, unique use. You may use them in your car or it could be one that you use for your home. Getting the right product is essential to getting the benefits from it.

For example, a home air filter is necessary if you have a filtration system installed within the air ducts of your home. This type of filter is different than the type of filter that you need to remove debris from your home’s heating system. Getting the right product is important. To help you, here are some tips.

• Use your old filters to help you to find the new ones. You can often bring old ones in so that you can compare them to those that you are looking to purchase. If you don’t have one, use your appliance’s owners manual to help you to find the right product. • Look at the goal of the filter. Some will remove debris so that the unit can work better, but another option could be odor removal. This may even be an upgrade you are looking for. For this type of unit, you need to look for carbon air filters designed to remove odor from the home. • It’s also important to know the make, model and details of the unit that you are placing it in, too. There is a large difference between one type of air filter to the next, including from one type of mobile home to the next, for example.

Air filter products can be purchased right online for your convenience and even money savings!
