Harry Potter to Christians: It's Not Good to Hear Voices
What Can Harry Potter Teach Us?
by Mark Replogle
(10/11/04) That is the popular and, thank God (if you'll pardon the use of the G name) the politically correct feeling among most Christians today. You will recall that in the second book of the Potter series, The Chamber Of Secrets, Harry Potter alone heard the voice of the basilisk. When he confided in his two friends about it, one told him that even in the wizarding world, hearing voices is not a good thing. Like art imitating reality, can't we say that even in our non-wizarding world, it's not a good thing to be hearing voices. Whether those voices be God's or someone else's voice.
Most of us would agree that hearing voices in your head, voices that aren't there, this is indeed a bad thing. In fact it used to be a sign of being crazy. But what if the person claims to be hearing God's voice? How can we know if God is speaking to this guy such that we shouldn't immediately lock him up in the looney bin?
The obvious answer is that we, the non-Harry Potter-hearing-voices-people, have to recall the eleven different ways that God speaks to mankind. Some of those ways are observable and objectively verifiable. Others are not observable but they can be verified. Examples in the first category are the times that God spoke to Moses out loud and all the other Israelites could hear their conversation. Or when God the Father spoke to Jesus during his baptism, and the others gathered around heard that talk. Or when the wayward prophet Balaam had a talking to by his donkey. Makes you wonder who the dumb animal was at that time, doesn't it?
Only daring men and women choose to hear God's voice today. Many christians don't hear God because they don't know what exercises to do that would enable them to hear his voice. While other christians choose not to hear God out of fear of what their friends will say about them. They will likely be considered to be crazy, religious fanatics, and attempting to glorify themselves. Worst yet, those christians will be imposing their morality on the rest of us because they claim to have heard God. Right?
The value of hearing God is that it saves lives. I recall the time that God told me to pray for a certain Dee Jay (Strawberry Jan) that used to be on KEZY 1190 AM. He told me that she was in danger and I was to pray for her often. So I did, even though I didn't know her, and knew nothing of her personal or professional life. Six years later she was nearly killed by a drunk driver on the freeway. Finally about 15 years later I met Strawberry Jan in person. I am certain that my prayers were central to God's plan to save her life in that accident, prevent certain injuries and lessen others during the years.
If you are courageous and want to hear God, then contact me toll free at (877) 230-0100 or by email at sgtrepo@comcast.net

Potter series galvanizes global book industry into going green
VANCOUVER, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Harry Potter series has galvanized the world's book industry into going green, from spurring the development of 32 new ecological papers, six for Potter exclusively, to igniting a shift where 300 publishers have adopted environmental policies that are helping to protect Canada's Boreal forest among others, says Markets Initiative, the Vancouver-based environmental group that worked with J.K. Rowling starting in 2003 and hundreds of publishers and paper mills since to turn other books green.
The last book in the Potter series, to be released later this week, is considered within the industry to be the most environmentally friendly in publishing history with 16 countries printing the book on eco-friendly paper up from one publisher in 2003.
"When it comes to green, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is at the top of the book pile," said Nicole Rycroft, executive director of Markets Initiative. "We foresee other publishers and major paper consumers being inspired to take similar action to protect species and forests such as Canada's Boreal."
The English-language editions of the latest book result in a savings of 197,685 trees (an area equivalent to 2.5 times the size of New York's Central Park) and 7.9 million kilograms of greenhouse gases (equivalent to taking 1,577 cars off the road). The book uses the highest standard of eco-friendly paper for the majority of its print runs.
Sarah Nelson, Editor in Chief of Publisher's Weekly, considered the source for publishing and book news in the world, said, "The world of publishing may never see the likes of Harry Potter again, but that doesn't discount its importance to readers, to booksellers and to the way publishing has melded its needs with that of the environment. To think that Potter is the largest print run in history and may have actually helped the planet."
Starting with the first Harry Potter book published on Ancient Forest Friendly paper by one publisher - Canada's Raincoast Books in 2002 - the Potter series has:
- Helped shift 300 publishers around the world, including in Germany,
Israel and Australia, to print a growing number of their book titles
on eco-friendly papers - books include Margaret Atwood's Blind
Assassin and Rohinton Mistry's Family Matters.
- Spurred demand in such a way that mainstream paper companies created
six new eco-papers specifically for the Potter titles, such as
Cascades' Enviro 100 and Schleipen's RC Volumen. Thirty-two new
Ancient Forest Friendly and eco-friendly papers have been produced
for book publishers in North America overall, as a result of this
shift.
- Triggered 84 printers across North America to stock Ancient Forest
Friendly or eco-friendly papers for the first time (printers include
Transcontinental and Friesens).

(1/6/06) The Harry Potter mania has not skipped the audio books world. Apart from Harry potter books, movies and video games you could find all the Harry Potter series on audio books formats downloadable audio books, audio books on CD and books on tape. Is it good for our children? Decide yourself after getting to know the pros and cons of the Harry Potter audio books:
The pros:
1. The Harry Potter audio books are an excellent educational activity for young children that can not read yet or for children with dyslexia. Yet, young children may be afraid of some of the chapters on the Harry Potter audio books just skip these parts.
2. The Harry Potter audio books are the perfect solution for children who do not like to read. It will help them get all the essential values from the Harry potter books without actually reading them. More than that, it could motivate them to start reading books. One mother told me that she allowed her children to listen only to the first Harry Potter audio book. To get to know the rest of the Harry Potter series, her children had to actually read them.
3. The Harry Potter audio books are the best method to teach children proper pronunciation. A perfect reading will teach them new words and correct speaking techniques.
4. The Harry Potter audio books will keep your children busy for hours. You could use them while traveling in the car, instead of reading to them before they go to sleep or just to get some rest from your children.
The cons:
1. The Harry Potter audio books may encourage children not to read books. In some cases I have heard of, children who started listening to audio books, have read less books. Yet, I believe it’s all a matter of a good education and parents’ domination. 2. Some say that listening to audio books such as the Harry Potter audio books may damage the imagination and creativity of the children.

(12/18/05) With the release of the fourth movie in the Harry Potter series, "The Goblet of Fire" has proven some sequels just keep getting better. Grossing over $400 million worldwide, it has attracted young and old alike to see what new adventures are to come for Harry and his friends at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Although some were concerned the increased rating of PG13 may hurt the movie's ticket sales, this does not appear to have been the case as children and adults of all ages gathered in droves to see the new movie. The rumor of a death among the characters had some parents concerned; however, it did not keep them from showing up to see which person may have died in "The Goblet of Fire". Fortunately J.K. Rowling left the end of the movie wide open for the upcoming battles against "you know who" in the movies to come.

(7/21/05) The Harry Potter book has just been released in the bookstores this week. This book is the sixth book in a planned series of 7 books.
I’m sure you have all heard that these books have been a huge success and there are millions of kids throughout the world hooked on these books as well as quite a few adults themselves. The publishing industry has never seen anything quite like this. What is the fascination with these books and now the movie? Why are so many children and some adults drawn to these books?
There have always been movies and fiction books on witchcraft, wizardry and sorcery - but none of them have ever obtained the popularity that this series of books has. What is so different with this line of books? Why are they so much more popular than anything else that has ever been written?
Many of the major Christian ministries are up in major arms about these books and now the movie. They say these books are a lure to lead children and adults into witchcraft and the other dark occult arts.
However, we have always had these types of movies and books coming at us. Why all of a sudden are so many Christians coming out against these books where they have really not done this in the past with all of the fantasy movies Hollywood has come out with in the past.
I've always felt in my spirit that there really was something different with these series of books - but I never bought or read any of them. I went ahead and rented the very first Harry Potter video and watched it in its complete entirety to see if these Christians were right in their criticism of this movie and these books or if they were just getting too carried away on what at first glance just seems to be harmless fantasy entertainment.
After watching and reviewing this movie very carefully, it is my personal opinion that the Christians who are up in arms over these books and movie are right! This movie, and especially the series of books themselves, is a definite lure from the dark side to entice and trap people into not only witchcraft itself - but other occult arts, which are expressly forbidden by God the Father in the Bible.
There is no question that Satan is the one orchestrating the way that these books have been written up and how they have been so cleverly marketed to a mass audience who have no idea what is really lurking behind all of it. Satan has very cleverly put a major spiritual secret in these books and movies that is in operation in the spiritual realm that will draw some of the more ignorant and naive into the real world of witchcraft.
That spiritual secret is the law of seeking. The Bible tells us to seek - and then we will find. This spirtual principle not only works in God's realm - but it also works in the realm of Satan where he and his demons roam seeking next who they can devour.
And Harry Potter is coincidentally given the official title of a seeker in the very first book. And what is a seeker going to find if he starts to research the subject of witchcraft and sorcery after reading these kinds of books and having the seeds of desire implanted in them as a result of reading these kind of books? Hundreds and hundreds of books on the subject of witchcraft - all with specific titles on how to actually become a witch, how to form out a coven, how to actually cast spells, etc.
Go to any major Borders book store - and you will literally see several hundreds of books in their metaphysical section - all dealing specifically with the subject of witchcraft and how to get started and progress further into it. And once that person decides he is going to try out some of this occult activity - he has now officially crossed over into enemy terrority and he has now given the demonic realm full legal right to come into him and his life.
And all of this can be started by just a few seeds of desire that can planted into someone by just imagining and fantasizing what it would be like if they could obtain the kind of supernatural power that Harry Potter has in all of these books. And with many of the readers of this line of books being our younger children - it doesn't take much to see what a deadly combination this could be for a very young, innocent and highly suggestible mind.
All Christians, especially Christians who have younger children who are wanting to read and really get into these books, should be warned about the spiritual trap that is being laid with these books.

(9/5/05) She lov’d me for the dangers I had pass’d; And I lov’d her that she did pity them. This only is the witchcraft I have us’d. --Othello, from Othello, the Moor of Venice, by William Shakespeare
Forgive the author for the little witchcraft. For alchemists, sorcerers, and witches ruled the world during the Middle Ages. And still do today. Because about now a Catholic faithful in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico or Lourds, France, is on their kneel expecting a miracle; somewhere someone is consulting a shaman, voodoo priest, or witch doctor; another is checking a horoscope, ouija board, crystal ball, tarot card, or reading the features of their face, or their palm. Elsewhere, somebody is trying to find interpretation on tortoiseshells or the yin-yang symbol, or shaking a fortune stick out of a container, or wearing a Saint Christopher medal or good luck charms; while others are finding meaning in broken mirrors, black cats, and the numbers 4, 9, and 13.
And so spiritism (from Greek pharmakia or English pharmacy), which involves direct, or indirect contact with demons, or wicked spirits, has come to stay in its various formsdivination, magic, looking for omens, sorcery, binding with spells, consulting mediums, and inquiring of the dead. The proof of this is that in just the United States, about 30 magazines with 10 million readers are publishing different forms of spiritism, while Brazil spends a whopping 500 million dollars annually on the subject. And while first century Christians in Ephesus were reported to have burnt their magical books totaling $37, 200, eighty percent of Roman Catholics in Brazil visit spiritistic centers after Mass. Why is it so?
All good to me is lost; Evil, be thou my Good. --Paradise Lost, by John Milton
Not that the practice of spiritism is new. It has its root in Babylonthe center of false religion. From there, it spread to Asia, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, Egypt, and other lands after men left Babel with the fall of the Tower to found new habitats for themselves. Nothing was done without resort to divination in these lands, which gave rise to the Augursmen who interpreted the future through the flights of the birds, or their entrails. A man of repute like Cicero, the Roman orator, was versed in looking for omens in the flights of birds. And kings, like Croesus of Lydia, visited the oracle of Delphi for divine messages, and got equivocal replies.
Now spiritism has refused to go away because of its seeming success in helping men and women to solve their problems. But is it?
Back in the day, Joan of Arc, the sixteen-year-old French girl who saw visions, was burnt to death by the Roman Catholic Church for practicing witchcraft. And in 1542, 1563, and 1604 in England, Acts of Parliament were enacted declaring witchcraft a capital offence. But today, witchcraft has been elevated to a prestigious art, and, we are leading our innocent children to bookstores at 12 midnightthe witching hourto buy them books on how to be a witch. Or wizard. We are living in the witchcraft generation!
Civilization is going downhill. . . . When civilization goes downhill, the whole planet goes down.Lewis Mumford
Values. Values? What values! I thought that there used to be something called moral values. And that it was the duty of the parents to inculcate them into the children. But not so. Now that we have more female readers than maleidle mothers at that who have not read Deuteronomy 6: 4-9the children would no less be better than walking corpses. Mom says it’s OK. So what about that? the child snaps at you. What is okay?
It used to be the Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, and The Narnia Chronicles, until Harry Potter came. And it seems that the door to a coven had been thrown open and we are beholding naked witches and wizards. So the same parents who would not ordinarily have completed witchcraft registration forms for their kids are presently buying all the Harry Potter books, with Lighting-bolt tattoos conspicuously stamped on the foreheads of the upcoming proud witches and wizards. Who knows but that the satanic tattoo was designed by Beelzebub himself, the king of demons! We now have the Professor Dumbledores (the Hogwarts headmaster and a powerful wizard), the Hedwigs (Harry’s owl and courier), the Parselmouths (wizards who rapport with snakes), and so on.
That would not be the first MISEDUCATION that the parents have given their young ones. (Some Loraine Hill.) Because the shameless Ananiases and Sapphiras have lied to their dumb kids about the non-existent man with red clothes and a long beard from the "Norh Pole" called Santa Claus, or Father Christmas, who goes about on Christmas Day handing out gifts to people. What is his home address in the forbidden frigid Arctic? They have been deceived that on Halloween night, the dead come out of their graves. Tell your parent to point out Adam, or your great-grand dad, come Halloween, among the crowd of dead-living souls. Yet, in the US, Canada, and Britain where this is practiced, be sure to see children dressed like ghosts and witches asking for sweets, or candies, in a game of trick or treat, the next Devil’s night, October 31.
Even certain devil-may-care parents have led their siblings to some church with a Messiah, and ended up in literal infernos. (Not Dante’s hell.) And this hour, someone, and their family, is in a church of Satan, or performing initiation rites in a secret cult.
We are living in a lying and twisted genaration. Gargabe in, garbage out--sowing rot and reaping rot. Hitler was an angel! And so are all your politicians. Add to this, the world of "Identified Flying Objects" (IFO's), the so-called witches and wizards. What you get is something like a weird equation.
It used to be that people checked blurbs of books, or film ratings, before reading books, or watching movies. But the fall of Satan and his demons to earth as a result of the war in heaven between him and Angel Michael after 1914, has changed all that. Because that Great Dragon wants to perish with thousands of faithfuls in the imminent final battle. Yet, God has warned against the practice of all facets of spiritism.
There shall not be found among you any one who. . . . [is] a witch. . . . or a wizard. . . . Deuteronomy 18: 10-12
That was God’s unambiguous command to his people, the Israelites, before they entered the Promissed Land, Canaana land steeped in idolatry and all forms of spirististic practices. In fact, He had earlier set aside the death penalty for such offenders at Exodus chapter 22 verse 18. But that warning did not prevent the stiff-necked people from rivaling the Canaanites in those practiceseven burning their children in fire! People like Saul, Jezebel, and Manasseh were guilty of pagan worship and demonism.
Similarly, there are official, and non-official, witches and wizards nowadays; neophytes; and parents teaching, or initiating, their children into witchcraft. The next stage would be the opening of an official school of witchcraft. Someone says there are already several of them.
Sooner or later, therefore, all our children would become witches and wizardsthe real Harry Potters are coming. Sooner or later, the world would have no need of cars, ships, airplanes, or rockets. Sooner or later, there would be no need for electricity, computers, and the Internet. But a witch world where the favorite game is Quidditch played on Nimbus Two Thousand, or Firebolt brooms by players wearing The Sorting Hat; and the best dish is Every Flavor Beans.
broken and blind he died/ /The darkest justice of death, blind and unblessedDylan Thomas
So when you are resting below a lily field, or a cherry tree, remember (if you like) that you left behind a world of goblinsa world born to evil. If you contributed to its demonization, the lily, or cherry tree, would lament the lamentations of Jeremiah on account of your being entombed under her. And you would receive a lecture on how not to gild the lily, or how not to bark up the wrong tree. If you like, listen; if you like, don’t. But if you played the angel when you strutted and fretted the world’s stage, God have mercy on your soul.
The surviving elves themselves would look back in amazement about how the Mugglesthe non-magical peoplegot along on earth in those by-gone days. And then they would zip around to see the sober solar system, and, on a dare, dash through the confounding cosmoson broom sticks twice the speed of lightand be the first to discover water in Jupiter, and, the initial spark of the Big Bang! And thank usignoramuses and most-to-be-pitied parentstill the appearance of the sapphire moon, for making them witches and wizards. What a privileged, and highly-honored, generation!
Therefore, propose a salubrious toast and clink your wine glasses, unblst folks, for the little devils. Way to go! You see?

(5/3/05) Q. I think that Harry Potter provides an excellent learning opportunity for my kids. How can I take advantage of his popularity to teach my children something?
A. You're on the right track here I think. A Harry Potter quiz would be an outstanding vehicle to teach your children logic. You don't necessarily have to focus on particular scenes from any of the books or movies, you can use a Harry Potter quiz as a foothold into a wider learning experience.
For example, you could devise a Harry Potter quiz that sets up a scenario where Harry Potter is faced with a problem that needs to be solved. He can use 1/3 magic, 1/3 math, and 1/3 logic to solve the problem.
For example: You could create a Harry Potter quiz question that says:
"Harry Potter is lost in the Forbidden Forrest. He has forgotten his magic wand and his spell book. All he has is his watch, a telescope, and one spell that lets him understand what animals are saying but doesn't let them understand him. Help Harry Potter get back to Hogwarts."
Let me just say that I'm not sure that this particular Harry potter quiz question can even be answered. It's your job to write the quiz, I'm only here to give you ideas.
What you want to make sure is that you don't just go for the easy answer and create a Harry Potter trivia quiz. That won't do anything for your goal of creating a Harry Potter quiz that will teach your children something. Be creative and imaginative. The results of a well-crafted Harry Potter quiz will be magical if you do it right.

(6/10/04) Millions of children and parents are reading the high-fantasy stories of hero Harry Potter. The popularity of the Harry Potter books is both disturbing and exciting for us parents. It is disturbing because it shows us how little encouragement our children receive to develop their dreams and vision. It is exciting because Harry makes us stretch and revolutionize our thinking in the way we support our children's inner world of imagination, dreaming, and story telling.
Children live in two worlds. The first world is their inner experience, feelings, pictures and dreams that make up who they are. The second world is their communities of their most influential people family, especially parents, and friends, teachers, or church members. The busier children become in their communities, the less time they have to explore the richness of their own inner life. We want out children to be successful, but not at the expense of their imagination and inner dreams. To be healthy and balanced, to remain emotionally and mentally stable in our high tech world, children must be encouraged to dream about how they are going to be and what they want to do.
The most important point for us to remember is that children never lose their visions and pictures of who they are. Indeed, our parental joy is to help children's dreams become real!
HARRY POTTER LESSON 1: Where are our children's dreams?
The four million children and their parents are reading the Harry Potter adventures of magic and friendship in the wizardry school demonstrate just how mundane and boring life has become for most of us.
When I taught school, children were always asking me, "Why do I have to do this?" "Why do you think I was born?" "What can I do when I grow up?" They were striving to connect with their inner image of themselves.
Today, with our emphasis on outwardly-focused achievement and performance, we rarely give children the time or space to explore their inner world or to discover their dreams for their lives. The children without dreams feel angry and hurt. They seem to go through each day without purpose and direction. They seek their adventure in negative attention-getting behaviors because they have no inner joy. IT DOESN"T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY!
We can bring our imaginations alive again through imagery, breathing, music, storytelling and affirmations--all of the techniques discussed in my book, Nurture Your Child's Gift. Somewhere in our stretch for success and good grades, sports experiences and science experiments, children forget their personal vision. But we can help them remember!
HARRY POTTER LESSON 2: Help children try on new roles.
When Harry Potter goes to school, he gets to don a wizard's robe, a symbol of his new role and esteem.
At Halloween a child tries on different Halloween costumes to get a feel for the different roles. In this process, our children have to imagine themselves as new characters, seeing and sensing how they would fit into situations, and imagine what it might be like to do this or to do that. In one of those moments, children will latch onto a dream, a picture of themselves that feels great. The question is, how can we help them hold onto it? Somehow, this dream is their connection to the outer world. It is through their comfort in new roles and characters that they will feel their way to success in the outer world.
HARRY POTTER LESSON 3: Help children experience success.
Harry Potter gets a break from his misery when he gets to go to Wizard school and, for the first time in his life, finds himself among people similar to himself. As parents, sometimes we have to help our children grow by moving them gently into experiences that challenge them. How we help our children experience life will depend upon their temperament and emotional management skills. We can empower children to move beyond their limitations and experience that Ah Ha! of achievement. The book, Nurture Your Child's Gift, addresses responsible empowerment.
HARRY POTTER LESSON 4: Champion your children
In wizardry school, Harry Potter has a mysterious champion who isn't known to him, at least not until a later time. Every child needs a champion. Research shows us that children who experience trauma, illness, or abuse CAN recover if they have a mentor or a cheerleader who is patient and listens. How can you champion your child? You can listen, support, challenge, care and be aware.
HARRY POTTER LESSON 5: Help your child become a hero.
Harry Potter is a hero. He is loyal to his friends. In his misadventures, he always has the intention to do good and to save the day. Children TODAY identify with Harry's intentions to do well, to solve the problem, to explore and satisfy their curiosity.
In a moment of self-reflection, ask yourself if you really understand your children's intentions. Or, do you only judge the results of their actions?
Harry exhibits kindness, courage, and friendship. Harry is a hero in his story. All children would like to be a hero in their life story. But they need you to be their hero first so they will have a model to emulate. Be a hero for their success, a champion for their dream. Give their vision the breathing space, nurturing, and time to unfold.
What Harry Potter teaches us is that children's imaginations are starving for new insight and adventure. You can satisfy that through nurturing their vision for their lives.
In order to do this, we may have to change the way we think and act towards our children. Of all the techniques in Nurture Your Child's Dream, in all of those moments I struggled to look inside a child's mind and heart, I learned two simple approaches: • To be aware • To care
I am asking you to join a parenting revolution in the way we think and act towards our children. Starting with awareness and caring is enough. They provide the fuel to realize dreams!
