What is Cloning?
3/29/06. Cloning is an umbrella term by scientists used to
describe different processes for the duplication of biological
material. Three types of cloning technologies are: therapeutic
cloning, recombinant DNA technology or DNA cloning, and reproductive
cloning.
Recombinant DNA Technology or DNA Cloning
Also called gene cloning or molecular cloning, this process
transfers a DNA fragment from one organism to a self-replicating
genetic element such as a bacterial plasmid. The DNA is then
propagated in a foreign host cell.
Reproductive Cloning
Production of the genetic twin of another organism. Dolly,
the sheep, was created this way.
Therapeutic Cloning
Also known as "embryo cloning." The goal is the
production of human embryos for use in research, not to create
cloned humans. The idea is to harvest stem cells that can be
used to study human development and treat disease.
What are the Scientific and Ethical Implications
of Cloning?
What are the Risks of Cloning?
Expensive and inefficient.
