Amish

My Amish Experiences

by Kathleen Roby

I've discovered various connections with the Amish experience throughout my life. We used to visit the Berne area (north/central edge of eastern IN). They had many excellent establishments, including furniture, a fabulous (though plain) smorgasbord restaurant with the BEST food, the wonderful fun Pine Lake natural water park, and, many various lovely shops. My aunts taught my daughter how to make little Amish people out of plain clothespins, at the campground in the country - with a scrumcious bakery. Just after high school, working in a fast-food joint, we had a regular Amish construction-working customer who seemed mutually intrigued. He was a little older, and a universe apart from, me. One day, at the drive-thru, he told me what a beautiful smile I have and I thanked him. Next I heard, the crew had moved-on to a new job elsewhere.

Although, I haven't spent much time in the more famous NE Ohio Amish region, we have plenty of their lovely little communities in SE Ohio. The VERY BEST produce I have ever eaten came from Amish farmers in northern Perry County, especially sweet corn!!! One family had 11 children and a nice size farm full of corn and produce. The children were so curious, yet never allowed to speak...usually barefoot. The girls had long aprons, well stained from REAL everyday life. One day the mother handed us a cantaloupe (which I don't always like), and told us to take it right home eat it right away, because it was at it’s MOST perfectly ripeness possible. WOW - she was SO right!!!

This past decade I've been studying our genealogies and discovered extensive branches of ancient ancestors who helped establish the Anabaptist/Mennonites, and, helped settle Flanders, Prussia, S. Ukraine, and, Kansas!!!
