Scott Peterson’s Attorney Vows to Prove His Innocence

5-5-03. Mark Geragos, Los Angeles defense attorney for Scott Peterson, vows to prove his client is innocent of capital murder charges that he murdered his pregnant wife and unborn child. Geragos’ remarks were made following two Stanislaus County Superior Court hearings keeping arrest and search warrant records sealed and rejecting defense motions to disqualify Judge Al Girolmai from the criminal case because he was involved in a related civil case where a local newspaper is seeking access to search warrants.

Scott Peterson’s mother, Jackie, of San Diego, says “our son is innocent, and we once again feel the truth will come out. We have faith in the legal system.”

Peterson was arrested after the bodies of his wife and son washed up in early April near the marina where he said he was fishing on his boat during the time Laci became missing. He is charged with two counts of murder that carry special circumstances. Under California law, the killing of a pregnant woman that kills her unborn child can be considered a double homicide. The defense will seek the death penalty.

Prosecutors in the case are reluctant to name their modest Modesto, California home as the crime scene yet, until all the evidence is in.

Decomposed Remains of Woman and Child May be Laci Peterson

4-15-2003. Police are identifying the decomposed remains of a woman and baby who washed ashore in California. They believe they may be Laci Peterson and her newborn child. Peterson has been missing since Christmas Eve. She was eight months’ pregnant. Her case was considered a homicide in March. The woman’s remains are skeletal and the full-term baby boy was still attached to the umbilical cord.

Autopsy results may take a few days.

 Pregnant California Woman Still Missing

(Feb 5, 2003). Scott Peterson, the husband of a pregnant California woman that has been missing since Christmas Eve, recently sold her SUV rental vehicle because he cannot afford to keep it and pay for his replacement truck after the police impounded his car and boat. Laci Peterson, 27, of Modesto is expected to deliver a baby boy any day now. Laci was last seen by her husband on December 24 when he left for a fishing trip. Laci's mother last talked to her on December 23. According to Scott Peterson, his wife was going to walk their dog and shop for dinner; however, a neighbord found the dog, still with its leash on and in the backyard. The reward for Laci's return is set for $500,000. Her husband has not been eliminated from the suspect pool.
