New York, NY (BlackNews.com) - The Black Girl's Guide to College Success by Sheryl Walker is the only book on the market to help young girls navigate college successfully. This book covers every facet of the college experience-from academics and job readiness to getting involved in organizations and other social components, written in a voice and tone that every female of color can relate to.
Here is what people are saying:
FANTASTIC! There is such a wealth of information that even your parents cannot tell you. Sheryl does a wonderful job of pointing out so much about navigating through college life. Everyone can use some good advice, but Sheryl didn't miss a beat, she touched on EVERYTHING. Her words are empowering and I'm encouraging more young Black Women to pick up this book.

This book came at the perfect time for me and my family. Our oldest daughter is going away to college!! I was so excited to buy this book for my daughter and for her sister who is 13 yrs old. We have all read it and we are looking forward to starting college as a family in August. Thank you for writing this guide. Every question I had as a mother was answered and we talked about the issues as a family. By the time my 13 year old is ready for college, we will be experts. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is going to attend college in the near future. It is an excellent resource because it covers everything.

This book was great because it touched upon all the important elements of going to college. As a recent college grad, I saw myself agreeing with all of the chapters, from maintaining a high GPA from the start to obtaining a mentor and internships. This is a great read for anyone going to college and parents/uncles/aunts/grandparents with kids getting ready to go to college. There is so much valuable information that only someone who graduated could know. A MUST BUY and READ!!!

This book is PERFECT for girls getting ready to go off to college and most chapters would be extremely useful for girls already in college. Don't be fooled, this book could be a valuable resource for any ethnicity. It's written in such a style that you'd think you were talking to your best friend and is well organized into chapters so that if you are looking for advice on something specific, it's easy to find.
Walker discusses everything from moving into your dorm room freshman year to how to get an internship; from relationships troubles (both romantic and friendships) to studying abroad. She repeatedly notes that she does not claim to be an "expert" because everyone's experience is different and she tells you not only what worked and didn't work for her, but what worked and didn't work for many of her friends, as well.
The last couple chapters delve deeper into what it's like to be a student of color at a college campus - dealing with racism, inferiority complexes, and how to deal with culture shock.
Even if you were a straight A student that was a star athlete and Class President in high school, this book gives you information on things that you'd never think about. I only wish someone had given me this 5 years ago when I went to college!

This book is crucial for all females thinking about going to college, on their way to college, and even already in college. I wish I had a book of this calibre on book shelves when I was in college. The Black Girl's Guide not only provides a recipe to succeed in college but also a recipe to succeeding in life which leaves an everlasting taste in your mouth. Just one read of the mission statement and you are already empowered and on your way to success. I read the book, fell in love and then purchased a copy for my college bound cousin who also loved it. I suggest you purchase your copy immediately.
