When we think of pageantry in America, we think of the beautiful and talented women in sequin gowns, swimsuits and talent. Well, the producers of the Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarship Pageant (MCAASP) has been dispelling this imagery since 1990 when the pageant was created to empower Black college men and to counteract the negative imagery of the them as perpetuated in the society. Contrary to popular acceptance, the principles of character, self-esteem, positive role modeling and services are limited less and the MCAASP officials hope to grow the next generation of African American leaders.
Candidates are being sought for the 2007 Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarship Pageant, set for April 4-7 in Houston and Prairie View, Texas, with the finals on April 7 at 7:00 p.m. The pageant is in its fourteenth year and is opened to Black men the ages of 18-28 who are enrolled in four-year American colleges and universities. The pageant is being held in conjunction with the National Leadership Summit on the Black Male.
The goal of the Program is to dispel the myth that one has to be a product of a negative environment by creating a model of excellence for a positive belief in oneself and race, and encouraging individual and group achievement in the pursuit of excellence.
Candidates compete for more than $10,000 in scholarships and prizes, and the opportunity to represent the national program. Competition includes a private interview with Judges, personal platform (oratory), talent, formal attire and on stage interview and question.
Deadline for application is February 28, 2007. For application, write to: The Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarship Program: P. O. Box 841595, Houston, TX 77284-1595; 713-927-6947, email: mrcollegiate@iwon.com.

Los Angeles, CA (BlackNews.com) (2/2/0-6) - Just Between Girlfriends Founder and New York Daily News Reporter Chrisena Coleman announces plans to kick off the JBG Denim & Diamonds: Girls Night Out 2006 Tour to raise money and awareness to combat domestic violence.
The five city tour, with stops in Houston, New York, Atlanta, Tampa and Los Angeles, kicks off February 10th in Houston. The events are a series of parties for professional women, moms and single women who need a grown up time out. The events will feature an assortment of activities including a denim & diamonds fashion show, silent auction, raffle, comedy and musical performances, karaoke, urban line dancing, networking, interactive games and tons of giveaways.

Coleman, a 42-year-old mother of two young sons, uses this event as a vehicle to benefit victims of domestic violence. As a journalist who reports on murder and mayhem Coleman sees how domestic violence affects the lives of millions of women.
"Domestic Violence is no laughing matter," said Coleman. "It is a national crisis that affects hundreds of thousands of women regardless of their race, age, net worth, education or sexual orientation. Domestic Violence is that dirty little secret that our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, daughters, neighbors and co-workers have dealt with in private. Its time to break the cycle, bring the issue to the forefront and take action against those who abuse."
Just Between Girlfriends women's networking group began in 1997 when Coleman penned a best-selling book by the same name. To celebrate the release of her book and mark the end of her book tour, she invited 10 of her closest girlfriends to the Bahamas for an action-packed weekend.
After word spread about the trip, Coleman hosted 200 women in the Bahamas. For the past eight years, the Columbus Day Girlfriends Getaway Weekend has become a staple in the lives of many women.
The women who traveled with Coleman on her annual trip had so much fun, they asked Coleman to host local events in the New York area. Coleman agreed, but only if the events raised money for charities that assisted women and children. Together, Coleman and her 3,000-plus members from around the country, have raised money for domestic violence, AIDS awareness, diabetes and breast cancer. Just Between Girlfriends has also hosted events to collect clothing, school supplies, toys and books for the under privileged.
Coleman's charitable work with Just Between Girlfriends has caught the attention of Lifetime TV and they are currently airing a promotional, mini-bio on Coleman as part of its Real Women, Real Stories shorts.
The Girls Night Out Tour is sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Board, Liz Claiborne, Pepsi Bottling, Universal-Motown Records, Cocktails by Jenn and Chadwicks.

Washington, DC, March 10, 2004 Jack and Jill of America, Inc. one of the country’s largest and oldest African American cultural, civic and social organizations for children has relocated its corporate headquarters from Florida to the Nation’s Capital. The move to Washington, DC, was prompted by the organization’s renewed focus on one of its major goals -- to support national legislation aimed at bettering conditions for all children. Leading these efforts will be Jack and Jill’s National President Ida L. Younge, along with newly hired Executive Director, Mioshi James Moses.
This is an exciting time for Jack and Jill of America, says Moses. Although we have always been influential in the formation of social policies that affect children, our new proximity to Capitol Hill facilitates more consistent and active involvement, and further positions the organization as a key collaborator and leading voice on such issues. A lawyer by training, Moses brings years of organizational management, business, and legal experience to the organization as a result of her employment with Booz Allen Hamilton, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Ernst and Young. She will also be responsible for the day-to-day activities at headquarters, which include improving the overall efficiency of its operations, as well as working on legislative issues with the National Executive Board. According to Younge, Mioshi has a well established record of achievement. Having grown up in Jack and Jill, she also brings a first hand understanding of the organization, a passion for its mission and a commitment to furthering the Jack and Jill legacy amongst future generations.
Jack and Jill’s National Executive Board officially dedicated the organization’s new offices located at 17th and U Streets, Northwest, by hosting an open house and Gala last fall for members, community partners and other VIPs. More than 300 guests were in attendance, including Jack and Jill officers from across the country.
Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was founded in 1938 by a group of mothers with the idea of bringing children together in a nurturing and culturally enriching environment. Today, more than 8,000 members strong, Jack and Jill is organized into seven regions that span the United States, each with local chapters whose members work to make a difference in the lives of their families and in the communities in which live. At the helm is its National Executive Board, which include President Younge; Alice Peoples, national vice-president; Linda Knight Burkley, national recording secretary; Dayatra Baker-White, national treasurer; Evelyn S. Davis, national corresponding secretary; Murvyn Baker Kelsey, national editor; Regina Barger Singleton, national program director.
