Jazz Singer Nina Simone Dies at 70

Top News Stories

4-22-03. Nina Simone died Monday in France. She was 70. A jazz vocalist, musician, and activist, she was best known for her groundbreaking work in 1960’s and ‘70s. Her throaty voice conveyed deep emotion. Unique, Nina was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933 in North Carolina, one of eight children.  A child prodigy, she performed her first piano recital at 10 years old. She attended Julliard in New York City and was a nightclub singer in Atlantic City when she landed her recording contract. Simone died of natural causes after an undisclosed long illness and is survived by her daughter, Lisa Stroud.

According to friend and jazz concert promoter George Wein, "she had incredible talent. She was different and creative, and there must have been a touch of genius in her mind . . . there was never anyone like Nina Simone, before or since."

Simone has influenced many artists, including Norah Jones, India.Arie, Peter Gabriel, Sade, and Aretha Franklin.

Rob Santos, an executive with BMG Heritage, says "I think she's probably one of the greatest black female singers of all time. Nina Simone is hard to peg because she crosses so many boundaries. . . anything you gave her she could sing . . . she had incredible guts, which I think that's why she never had the mass appeal that she should have had. She really was her own person, and she definitely didn't hold back."
