Can African-American Mothers Help Save Them?

Kimberley Crouch
Detroit, MI (BlackNews.com) - More black men in the United States today are in jail than in college. Half of African-American men in the inner cities do not finish high school, and more than 70 percent of black male high school dropouts in their 20s are unemployed.
Every day, it seems, a new study is released that documents the harsh realities faced by African American men living on society's fringes. Whether you look at employment, parenting, education, citizenship, or any other measurement of success in this society, the numbers point to black men in crisis.
What can be done? Author Kimberley Crouch chooses to inspire a new generation rather than to bemoan the dire straits of their predecessors in her new book, Mother To Son: Words of Wisdom, Inspiration and Hope For Today's Young African-American Men. In a heartfelt collection of letters, the author provides powerful, credible words of wisdom for mothers and sons facing the challenging journey from adolescence to adulthood and beyond.
"I recognize I'm not just raising sons," Crouch writes, "I'm also creating pathways for future generations. The lessons instilled today could be the very foundation that nurtures the souls and spirits of generations to come."
Mother To Son tackles the issues that have been listed by many as the cause of today's problems: racism, lack of education and a subculture that values bravado and consumption over work. Speaking as a mother of two sons and the sister of a brother who lost his life to the cycle of violence many inner city African-American youths encounter, Crouch also shares simple revelations about her background that fuel her commitment to raise productive and successful young men. While keeping the style realistic, inviting and empathetic, she also reminds them of the importance of placing God first, of character and personal integrity and serving as their brother's keeper in the collective sense of the term.
A valuable book for inspiring and guiding young males, Mother To Son promises to be a source of inspiration and timeless wisdom for all.
