NEW YORK, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Five prominent African American pastors convened in New York City on Thursday, March 6 for a "Day of Dialogue" with NBC Nightly News Anchor and Managing Editor Brian Williams to draw the network's attention to key issues affecting the Black community. The pastors, including bishops Charles Blake, Sedgwick Daniels and T.D. Jakes, along with pastors A.R. Bernard and John Borders III, provided an enlightening look at the church's role in addressing the problems faced by African Americans nationwide.
"It was a wonderful thing to have the NBC News editorial staff meet with five of the most influential African-American pastors in this country," said Williams. "These are men on the front lines in their communities. Given the importance of faith in our national conversation, the conversation we had can only make our work better."
Williams, along with several NBC News producers and executives, including President Steve Capus, listened as the renowned pastors discussed the importance of saving the Black male, providing housing and education, addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis, and healing inner cities from the wounds created by the influx of crime and drugs.
"This session was the first time that NBC News has brought together such a distinguished group of pastors representing the African American community of faith," said Capus. "We understand that the church is more than a place of worship, it is a tremendous resource for the African American community. We were pleased to have such a unique opportunity to create an open pipeline of information with them."
"As the epicenter of many inner cities, the church has the responsibility to go into the communities and show our brothers and sisters how to survive and thrive," said Bishop Jakes, senior pastor of The Potter's House of Dallas. "We need to find a way to work with the media in a concerted effort to increase awareness of the resources offered by Black churches to communities all over the country."
"Churches are building schools and housing developments, offering financial literacy programs and job training, and developing counseling centers, prison ministries and drug rehabilitation programs," said Bishop Blake, presiding bishop of the six million-member Church of God in Christ and pastor of West Angeles Church of God in Christ. "When other organizations abandoned us, we had to create our own support system."
The "Day of Dialogue" opened the door for future discourse between the Black church and NBC News' editorial board.

5 EASY WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS THIS SEASON
By Makeisha Lee, Health and Nutritional Advisor
The winter season is in full throttle - and so are your nerves. Everybody is trying to plan the perfect meal, meanwhile stressing over family members that dont get along. Here are 5 great tips that will help you to minimize the stress!
1. Be reasonable with your expectations - A dose of realism sprinkled with simplicity will help you to resist the urge to have everything perfect! Instead, why not set the intention to enjoy time with friends and family over fun board games, while sipping organic warm apple cider and reflecting on the good ole times! Most importantly recognize you may not please everyone.
2. Take care of yourself and your family - The winter season is always a time of indulgence, so you definitely want to be cautious of over-indulgence and being under-active. You may choose to keep meal portion sizes small, keep bite size snacks on small plates, and when you go for second helpings, wait 20 minutes before digging in again. Go a step further to encourage everyone to keep active by arranging food trays and displays around the room or several rooms if possible- to keep it moving. Carve out 20 minutes of the day for some, me time to ignite an attitude of gratitude for life!
3. Exercise - Who says you cant find time to fit exercise in? Here is the HOW and the WHY of exercise around this time of year. You can include your children and/or a spouse in your work-out by working out at home to your favorite music. Do power-shopping by throwing on the sneakers, parking at the back of the malls parking lot, taking the stairs instead of the elevator; walking instead of driving as much as possible. In fact take a walk right after your meal. WHY? Exercise will most assuredly increase stress-releasing endorphins (feel good hormones) to increase an over-all sense of well being!
4. Commitment - Having commitment gives a sense of purpose and builds self-esteem which goes a long way in counteracting stress. When you are committed - no matter what happens you are unstoppable when it comes to getting what you want. Generally, people who are committed to a cause or are goal-oriented tend to be more successful in most aspects of their lives. If you havent been committed to anything before now, start by committing to these 5 basic tips - today!
5. Get your laugh on! - Many studies have proven that laughter is one of the best stress relievers to date. Laughing cleanses the soul and makes you lighter, more easy going with an even temperament. India Arie, the recording artist puts it, It doesnt cost a thing to smile, it doesnt cost a thing to laugh and you better thank God for that!
Now you are 5 steps closer to enjoying a stress-less season and life well beyond!

In the March issue of Black Enterprise: "A House is Now Our Home." James and Kimberly Papillion of Baton Rouge were among 1,000 entrants in our Own Your First Home contest, a competition to promote homebuying as the No. 1 wealth-building tool for African Americans.
New York, NY (3/6/06 BlackNews.com) - BLACK ENTERPRISE (BE) Founder, Chairman, and Publisher Earl G. Graves Sr. has announced James and Kimberly Papillion of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, both 30, as the winners of the publication's "Own Your First Home" contest. The publication awarded the couple, featured in the March issue cover story, "A House is Now Our Home," $10,000 to use toward the down payment on their first home.
The goal of the "Own Your First Home" competition, which brought in more than 1,000 essay entries from around the nation, was to inspire more African Americans to use homeownership as a means to build multigenerational wealth and establish financial security. While the number of African Americans who own homes has risen in recent years, there remains a sizeable gap in homeownership between blacks and other racial groups. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of the fourth quarter of 2002, 74.8% of white households own their home compared to 47.5% of black households.
"Homeownership is clearly the number one thing that African Americans can do to reduce the wealth gap in this country," says Graves Sr. "The 'Own Your First Home' contest illustrates BE's commitment to helping our audience realize that owning a home is possible and that they can begin taking the steps necessary to make it happen today. Having had the discipline and determination to curb spending, repair credit, and save for a down payment, the Papillions are an excellent example of how financial obstacles can be overcome to achieve the ultimate investment."
The Papillions and three runners-up received other prizes, including a $250 gift card from Lowe's Home Improvement and a two-year subscription to BE (Pg. 74).
Plus:
In an effort to simplify and explain the home buying process, BLACK ENTERPRISE has compiled a five-part series designed to walk readers through each step. Part one, "Preparing to Buy a Home," explains what prospective home buyers must do to prepare for homeownership, including repairing credit and getting approved for a loan (Pg. 83).
Debt consolidation-taking several debts and converting them into one manageable payment-may be the answer to those drowning in debt. "In Too Deep" examines what debt consolidation actually means, the different ways to approach it, and whether it's the best solution for extreme debt (Pg. 89).
A tight labor market has pushed many American workers to enter the risky world of independent contracting. "The Independent Contractor's Survival Guide" provides the self-employed with tips on retirement and tax planning, information about obtaining adequate insurance coverage, and advice on tracking business expenses while juggling work and generating new business (Pg. 99).
The March 2006 issue of BLACK ENTERPRISE is available on newsstands now.
BLACK ENTERPRISE, your ultimate guide to financial empowerment, is the premier business, investment, and wealth-building resource for African Americans. Since 1970, BE has provided essential business information and advice to professionals, corporate executives, entrepreneurs, and decision makers. The publication provides 3.7 million readers with monthly information on entrepreneurship, careers, and financial management. As the definitive source for and about African American business markets and leaders, BE is the authority for business news and trends. The magazine is published by Earl G. Graves Publishing Co.

Trenton, NJ's Patriots Week includes program offerings which examine black military service and patriotism during the Revolution and beyond.
Photo: wilkinsonmedia.net

Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins is a featured speaker at this year's Patriot's Week in Trenton, NJ. Dinkins is a Trenton native.
Trenton, NJ (BlackNews.com 11/20/06) - It has been said that black history is American history. So why wait until February to explore the contributions black Americans have made to the story of America? This December, the annual Patriots’ Week celebration in Trenton, NJ will revisit 1776 and the Revolutionary War, a chapter in America’s story with timeless themes of freedom and independence. Patriots’ Week runs December 26 30, 2006, and will feature battlefield reenactments, Revolutionary era historic site tours, music, art, and more.
This year’s Patriots’ Week programming includes dozens of activities which commemorate the city of Trenton’s role in the Revolutionary War and in the birth of America. Among these events are three program offerings which examine black military service and patriotism during the Revolution and beyond.
Trenton native and former New York City Mayor David Dinkins will be the featured speaker at the Contemporary Patriots’ Lecture on Tuesday, December 26. The battle for freedom and the struggle to realize the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution continue today. The Contemporary Patriots’ Lecture seeks to bridge the study of the American Revolution as history and the study of the principles of the Revolution as they impact our present lives.
Mayor Dinkins will be followed on Tuesday by Patrick Charles, author of Washington's Decision: The Story of George Washington's Decision to Reaccept Black Enlistments in the Continental Army, December 31, 1775. Mr. Charles will discuss the factors which led George Washington to reaccept black soldiers in the Continental Army, providing insight into the politics behind blacks’ Revolutionary military service, the evolution of slaves to soldiers, and the state of the Army during the first year of hostilities.
Issues of race and loyalty color the proceedings of 18th-century trial reenactments by the American Historical Theatre. Set against the distinguished backdrop of the New Jersey State House Assembly Chambers, a jury of audience members will decide the fate of colonial defendants. In one trial, a black privateer is charged with desertion. The trial reenactments will be held on Thursday, December 28 and Friday, December 29.
Patriots’ Week, with its emphasis on this historic struggle for independence, has particular relevance for African Americans, even today, says Taneshia Nash Laird, Executive Director of the Trenton Downtown Association. Trenton residents and visitors to our city will gain a greater awareness of the city’s place and of New Jersey’s place in American history. Patriots’ Weeks is also a wonderful opportunity to experience all that the city of Trenton has to offer.
Since 2004, the annual Patriots’ Week festivities have attracted thousands to Trenton’s capital city. The event promises to be a fun and educational experience for adults and children of all ages. In addition to the Revolutionary War-themed activities, Patriots’ Week attendees will also enjoy strolling through historic downtown Trenton, and may be interested in staying overnight or for the entire week. The Trenton Marriott Lafayette Yard hotel, located in downtown Trenton, is offering a special room rate during Patriots’ Week.
The City of Trenton is conveniently located on the Northeast Corridor between New York City and Philadelphia making it accessible from all of the area’s major airports, the Amtrak, NJ Transit and SEPTA train lines, and major roadways.
Patriots’ Week is produced by the Trenton Downtown Association, managers of the city’s business improvement district, with assistance from the New Jersey Office of Travel & Tourism, the New Jersey Historical Commission, the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and the New Jersey Council on the Arts.
Most of Patriots’ Week happenings are free and all are open to the public. For complete schedule of events and additional information please visit www.patriotsweek.com or call 1-877-PAT-WEEK.

Just what you've been looking for...

New Haven, CT (BlackNews.com) (2/1/06) - Over the 1990s, there was a 30 percent decline in the black poverty rate, and, in 2000, the black poverty rate reached its lowest point ever recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau. Along with the decline in the numbers of blacks in poverty, there were significant increases in the numbers of blacks in the middle and upper classes. For example, between 1994 and 2004, the number of black households earning $100,000 or more a year tripled.
The decline in black poverty and the growth of the black middle class has been missed by many. The black legal scholar Derrick Bell, for example, claims that today there is a large racial underclass and precious few blacks in the middle and upper classes. The important black public intellectual, Henry Louis Gates Jr., argues, The 60's generation now seems to be presiding over the permanent entrenchment of a vast black underclass.
The current issue of the Thora Institute's Black Directions report on The Size and Politics of the Black Middle Class shows conclusively that the assertions by Bell and Gates are false. Although black public intellectuals are repeatedly claiming that there is a crisis of bad values and behaviors in black America, there is little evidence to support these claims.
In addition to the positive news about black poverty and the black middle class, the current issue of Black Directions discusses other positive developments in black America around out-of-wedlock births, teenage pregnancy and crime over the 1990s that have been missed by the black pundits.
The full report on The Size and Politics of the Black Middle Class can be obtained for $9 for the single issue. Subscribers to Black Directions can receive this issue for $6 as part of their one-year subscription of $36 for six issues. Checks of $9 for this single issue or $36 for a one-year subscription must be made out to the Thora Institute, LLC and mailed to Thora Institute, LLC, Attn: Black Middle Class, P.O. "...fighting to create a healthy passage for black males from boyhood to manhood."
Baltimore, MD - (3/2/04) When Dr. Raymond Winbush wrote The Warrior Method: A Program For Rearing Black Boys (Amistad/HarperCollins, 2001) little did he know that Jada Pinkett-Smith and her husband Will would use the book as a guide for raising their son.
"I was totally surprised and flattered, when I got this information at a Los Angeles bookstore while on book tour and was humbled by how influential educators can be in the work we do," said Winbush who is Director of the Institute for Urban Research at Morgan State University. "I had used the book in a class I was teaching in the School of Public Health here at Morgan State University and was unaware that one of my students in the class, Karen Banfield-Evans was chair of the Will & Jada Pinkett-Smith Family Foundation. She encouraged me to write a grant proposal to help establish THE WARRIOR INSTITUTE (TWI) and we were pleased to receive $50,000 from the Will and Jada Pinkett Smith Family Foundation to train teachers, parents and students in the method outlined in my book."
THE WARRIOR INSTITUTE (TWI) is located on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. Mrs. Pinkett Smith is a native Baltimorean and maintains a strong presence in the community through the arts and education.
In January 2004, THE WARRIOR INSTITUTE (TWI) was officially launched. The teacher training program is designed to totally immerse four teachers in the philosophy and principles of "The Warrior Method."
The TWI Training will be held for a period of 26 weeks culminating in a graduation ceremony that will take place in Accra Ghana, West Africa during December 2004. Age appropriate curricula will be developed so that "The Method" can be taught to others as well as replicated around the country. The "Sengbeh Pieh" Lecture Series will also be established bringing prominent educators and scholars to The Warrior Institute at Morgan State University. This series will be free and open to the public.
"We're excited about this project and the team of individuals we've brought together," says Blanche Williams the newly appointed Director of THE WARRIOR INSTITUTE. "We have the opportunity to provide a distinctive Afrikan-centered approach to rearing healthy Black boys."
Our four teachers include:
Michelle A. Yeboah, Ph.D. - She received her Doctorate in Public Health and a Bachelor of Science in Community Health Education from Morgan State University. She was a National Institute of Health Research (NIH) Fellow from 2000-2002 and is currently a professor at Morgan State University.
Meshelle Foreman-Shields - She received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Bowie State University. Baltimore, MD - (3/8/04) A victim or witness often serves as the most critical resource the justice system depends on to get the worst criminals off the streets. Sadly, too often the justice system treats those victims and witnesses as tools, rather than human beings. Baltimore City officials do not want to admit the serious challenge they face: that the current security program for victims and witnesses is anything but secure, and neither protects nor adequately assists; it's basically non-existent. Change is absolutely crucial.
With a population of less than 700,000 and well over 300 violent crime deaths per year, Baltimore is a city in crisis. One might think with 300-plus murders a year, dozens of which gather dust in the police departments cold case unit [a division charged with unsolved cases] there would be a large number of witnesses in the city's infamous protection program willing to assist law enforcement officials. "Unfortunately," says DiTanya Madden, the former Witness Security Coordinator for the Baltimore State's Attorney's Office, "that just isn't the case."
"Most will not come forward for fear of retaliation," says Madden, who is now the Founder, President and CEO of National Protection Consultants, Inc., a firm responsible for the implementation of Operation Safe Witness, a non-profit criminal justice initiative designed to assist victims, witnesses and protection programs nationwide.
In a February 9, 2004 Baltimore Sun article, Wes Adams, a homicide prosecutor in the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office, says that in 90 percent of his cases, witnesses are afraid to testify or they lie on the stand.
Retaliation is a major concern. In October 2002, it's reported that 36-year-old Angela Dawson, her husband and their five school-age children were killed when their home was firebombed as a retaliatory attack because they stood up to drug dealers in their East Baltimore neighborhood. Prior to the arson attack, the family was hostage to repeated harassment and attacks from neighborhood drug dealers. All too often victims and witnesses, like the Dawsons, are forced to suffer psychological, financial and physical hardship as a result of the crimes they experience or incidents they witness and a justice system inadequate to assist them.
Governor Robert Ehrlich announced that he will introduce legislation to more specifically target witness threats, but the system and those left to administer services that would protect the Dawsons and other witnesses like them, is in need of improvements. Witnesses should be afforded an option with respect to their safety and well-being. The daunting task should not be left to administrative personnel possessing very little if any expertise in the field. "We are talking about human life," Madden stated.
For more than seven years crime victims and witnesses have been protected on a wing and a prayer. "We are calling for dramatic change in the witness protection program here in Maryland and other states struggling with similar difficulty," Madden insists. "One can only imagine the degree of stress and pressure, not to mention the conflicting interest, under which detectives are forced to operate-simultaneously investigating cases and facilitating protection for their witnesses. Given Commissioner Clark's position and the extent of his hands-on involvement with his officers, I'm certain he's well aware of the sensitive issues involved with witness protection for example, where something like providing cab fare for a witness can raise ethical concerns and quite possibly jeopardize the integrity of the case," says Madden.
"New legislation will improve the capabilities of prosecutors and the police," agrees Madden, "but starting a public debate about the failing witness protection program will encourage new ideas to make witnesses safer, and consequently more willing to cooperate in law enforcement investigations. There are dangerous pitfalls of witness protection services that law enforcement professionals as well as prosecutors can avoid without risking lives or shrinking the base of witnesses eligible for protection," says Madden.
"With a humanistic alternative to the Baltimore City Witness Security Program, Baltimore City and urban communities alike will see more witnesses coming forward and more crimes being solved," says Madden. But most of all, citizens, victims and witnesses will feel safer knowing that there is a system equipped to address the real needs of crime victims, especially those witnesses we depend on so much. That's Madden's goal.

CHP Child Saftey Restraint ad created by Crossover Creative Group
Richmond, CA - "For every mile driven, an African American is twice as likely to die in a motor vehicle crash than other Americans," states concerned Crossover Creative Group president and creative director Steve Climons. "What's more, African American children are three times as likely to die from a car crash than are their white counterparts." With a desire to help improve fatality statistics in the black community, San Francisco Bay Area-based advertising agency Crossover Creative Group, made an offer to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) that it could not refuse. When Crossover learned the CHP budget would not cover development of video broadcast-quality public service announcements, Climons made a decision to contribute his company's advertising expertise and to underwrite the cost of developing and producing three high-quality 30-second public service announcements (PSA) for television. On Monday, March 22, 2003, the final segment of the three-part campaign will launch with the statewide print and radio promotion on the appropriate and consistent use of child safety seats and restraints. Billboards and community newspapers, and the top urban radio stations will be used to educate parents on the need to utilize child safety seats.
In 2003, Crossover Creative Group was awarded the CHP Traffic Safety Outreach Campaign to the African American Community (TSOAAC). Though supported by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the funding was insufficient to cover the cost to deliver traffic safety messages via television, as well as radio, urban community news publications and strategic outdoor placement. The overall campaign was designed to positively influence African American driving safety behaviors statewide. The first two segments of the campaign addressed seat belt use and Driving Under the Influence (DUI) issues.
Crossover's monetary contribution was just part of the agency's multi-tiered effort to increase impact. In order to supplement the million dollar grant funding supplied by the OTS, along with corporations and media partners, Crossover also solicited bonus media space and airtime to help extend the reach and frequency of the overall print and radio campaign.
Such dedication to hot community issues is status quo among the J. Walter Thompsons of the ad world, but virtually unprecedented among relatively small, independent creative houses like Crossover Creative Group. In proportion to its billings, a contribution of this nature is a sizeable investment.
"Most agencies like ours can't afford to make such large scale pro bono gestures," says Climons. "In this case, we simply could not afford to have this program fall short of its potential." Employing a unique marketing tool it calls the "crossover factor," Crossover Creative Group will not settle for stale, stereotypical messaging. One of Crossover's team captains, writer Terri Murray, said, "We respect and leverage our target market's on-going aspirations, need for self-enrichment and propensity to achieve against the odds.
Crossover Creative Group worked diligently with the research firm of Mason Tillman Associates, LTD. of Oakland and its strategic and media partners, the Crocker/Flanagan Agency of Sacramento, to match the California Highway Patrol's Traffic Safety Outreach Campaign to the African American community goals.
"We at the CHP are delighted with the work that Crossover Creative Group has done leading this campaign and we are particularly appreciative of the television PSA productions Crossover donated in support of our efforts against DUI, seatbelt us and child safety seats," said CHP Commissioner D.O. "Spike" Helmick. "Crossover has a tremendous history of effective partnerships within California's diverse communities. We are confident that adding the CHP to those partnerships has resulted in saving lives.
"According to reports, unsafe driving habits represent not only a law enforcement challenge, but an urgent public health crisis," warns Crossover account executive Charlie Alketruse, point man on the CHP account. "Our contribution proves that Crossover Creative Group sees this outreach campaign as more than a business opportunity, but a calling to serve our community."
Crossover Creative Group's advertising approach is particularly sensitive to urban culture, while the Company fervently lends its expertise and charitable support to societal messaging needs in diverse communities. Spearheading the CHP Traffic Safety Outreach Campaign to the African American Community permitted Crossover to showcase the unparalleled work of his imaginative, energetic and strategic thinking advertising staff.
About Crossover Creative Group: In 1989, president and creative director Steve Climons founded SCCS Advertising, which he re-launched with a new focus as Crossover Creative Group in 1996 based on the increase in diversity of the major markets, which was redefining consumer trends. The population/economic growth and evolution of the multicultural population (African American, Hispanic and Asian American) across the country has resulted in a trans-demographic target group Crossover refers to as "the new mainstream."
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Crossover is a contemporary company that takes a unique forward-looking approach to advertising and marketing, specifically when it comes to its specialty - targeting multicultural markets. Crossover Creative Group has employed unique and extensive mass market research methodologies that, along with its real-world experience, qualify the group as experts in the field of multicultural marketing. Crossover offers advertising experience in all the major business categories with companies such as British Airways, Citibank, General Mills, Gulf Oil, Pacific Bell, McDonald's, PG&E, Safeway and Sony.

Long Beach, CA - (9/10/03). BlackNews.com, the premier online destination for African-American news, is heightening the awareness of the twelve African-American firefighters who lost their lives while trying to save others in the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001.
The heroes consist of eleven firefighters and one captain: Gerard L. Baptiste, Vernon Cherry, Tarel Coleman, Andre R. Fletcher, Keith Glascoe, Ronnie Henderson, William L. Henry, Karl Joseph, Keithroy Maynard, Shawn Powel, Leon Smith, and Captain Vernon Richard.
These individuals should especially be recognized because they stepped up to the plate, not just to save lives on September 11th, but to be firefighters period. In New York City, there are about 11,000 firefighters, but only about 300 of them are Black. It takes a brave and self-sacrificing individual to risk their life for others every day.
"There was great courage and ambition within these men," says Dante Lee, president of BlackNews.com. "All of the firefighters should go down in history books, but we want to put great emphasis on the African-American ones because they never really got the recognition they deserved. You barely saw their faces on television, and it's important for the world to know that Blacks can be heroes too."
The local NYC Association of Black Firefighters will host a dedication to the twelve black firefighters on September 11, 2003 at 11am in New York City (397-401 Quincy Street). There will also be a documentary screening about the twelve black firefighters on September 11th, 2003 at 12:30pm and 3:30pm in New York City (New York Historical Society - 2 West 77th Street).

Campaign is first of its kind to Target African American Men and Women
Boston, MA - (8/28/03). The month of September is officially proclaimed "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month," and prostate cancer survivor, Thomas Farrington is intent on getting the awareness message to men with the highest prostate cancer risk and death rates of any others in the world- African American men. Having lost his father and both grandfathers to this disease, Farrington wrote a book about prostate cancer entitled, "Battling the Killer Within." Most recently, Farrington founded the Prostate Health Education Network, Inc., (PHEN) a non profit organization with a focus on providing education and awareness to African Americans. "Black men and women need to be educated about prostate cancer, because knowledge of this disease and early detection can lead to a cure," said Farrington. As more people begin to understand that Black Americans die at a rate more than twice that of any other men in this country, including Whites, Hispanics, Asians and Indians, they understand the urgency and mission of PHEN's education and awareness efforts.
PHEN kicks off its awareness campaign in nine cities in September, using a combination of advertising on bus and subway systems, radio public service announcements and the Internet. These cities include: Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, New York, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. The message is straight to the point: "African American Men Have the World's Highest Prostate Cancer Risk" and "Prostate Cancer Kills! - But, is Curable with Early Detection."
With a projected audience of 50 million people on the transit systems alone, the messages urge men to begin testing their Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) by age 45 to check their risk levels. While all African American men are at high risk for the disease, some are even higher, depending on their family history.
PHEN's website, www.ProstateHealthEd.org serves as a major educational resource. Men are able to use the website to check their prostate cancer risk level and to learn about screening guidelines. They can even identify screening and treatment centers, as well as support groups, within their specific city, because the website focuses on 25 cities, each with its own webpage.
The website also serves to build a community for PHEN's 25 focus cities and their respective states by showcasing the efforts of others working on the prostate cancer education and awareness needs of African Americans.
Farrington believes that enhanced visibility of the contributions made by others will spark a national momentum that will evolve and change what he terms, "The African American Prostate Predicament."
"Realizing that men's lives can be saved through education and awareness initiatives is what prompted me to found PHEN," said Farrington. "I recognize this is a major challenge, but I have been able to attract others to get behind this effort, especially fellow prostate cancer survivors, doctors and medical centers."
Doctor Bruce Chabner, Clinical Director of Mass General Hospital Cancer Center in Boston, Massachusetts, is an active member of PHEN's Boston Advisory Board. "The work that PHEN is undertaking is important in Boston and throughout the country," said Dr. Chabner.
"It's incredible," said Farrington. "I released my book in 2001, and today prostate cancer survivors around the world thank me for saving their lives. It was the book that prompted them to take personal action leading them to early detection and a chance to be cured," he said.
PHEN's September kick-off campaign is designed to provide education and awareness and also to gain national visibility and recruit others to the effort. "This is not just a one month campaign, but the beginning of an on-going effort to save lives, and to eliminate the African American disparity as the long term goal," stated Farrington.
PHEN's website is www.ProstateHealthEd.org. Those interested in joining, may do so online.
PHEN was established to increase prostate health education and awareness among men at high risk for prostate cancer. African American men have the highest prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates in the world; accordingly these men and their families are a primary focus for PHEN. Programs and initiatives include: Public events to heighten prostate health education and awareness, Outreach efforts to make men aware of their prostate cancer risk profile, Education on early detection guidelines, Seminars and workshops to educate families, Education about prostate cancer treatment options. Highlighting the efforts and works of other individuals and organizations, Identifying practices that can be emulated, Support of screening and testing programs, Fundraising to support PHEN programs.
For the past few years I have been trying to inform people as to the benefits of bloodletting and antioxidant therapy to combat disease. Two recent articles placed in Medline confirm that information. They state bloodletting and antioxidant therapy greatly reduce the problems associated with sickle cell anemia. I hope you take this information with the importance it requires and place this information within your webring such that others will benefit from the knowledge. This protocol does not make money for anyone and therefore I believe without a grassroots "call to arms" . . . it simply will not be implemented. Fight the good fight!
