APPLE IPOD AND CHEVROLET AD CAMPAIGNS ROCK WITH MARY AT THE FOREFRONT
CHECK OUT PERFORMANCES BY MARY THIS WEEK, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6TH ON 'CNN HEROES: ALL-STAR TRIBUTE' AND FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7TH ON 'MOVIES ROCK' ON CBS
NEW YORK, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Geffen Records superstar and hit-making songwriter Mary J. Blige, is set to follow-up the most successful album of her career, the triple platinum "The Breakthrough," with her eighth (8th) studio CD "Growing Pains" on Tuesday, December 18th, one week before Christmas.
"Growing Pains" includes her top ten single "Just Fine" which has become an instant favorite on radio enjoyed by over 20 million listeners. "Just Fine" is in heavy rotation on MTV, BET and VH-1, and Mary recently shot the video for her second single, "Work That," which is currently featured in an Apple iPod commercial.
After selling over 40 million CDs and garnering six Grammy Awards during her phenomenal 15-year career, Mary is confident that her fans will not be disappointed with "Growing Pains." "They're going to get a sense of what my state of mind is and how I view the world," she says. "And hopefully, most of all, they're going to hear just the sincere honesty and love that I have for them." She adds, "'Growing Pains' represents accepting that there's pain that goes along with growing and change. No pain, no gain."
"Growing Pains," with Mary co-writing most of the songs on the album, features guest appearances by Ludacris and Usher and production by The Neptunes, Jazze Pha, Johnta Austin, Neyo, Stargate, Bryan-Michael Cox, Dre and Vidal, Tricky, Dream, and Sean Garrett.
Mary makes her message loud, clear and seriously funky on the first release "Just Fine" produced by Jazze Pha and Tricky and co-written by Mary and Dream. A celebration of life, "Just Fine" gives you Mary fierce, and as the video shows, glamorous. The song's vibe? "Sometimes it feels like you're having this miserable time, like all 365 days of the year are tough. But then, you get one of those days; maybe when your hair is great, or you're not stuck in traffic; where it's a 'just fine' day. At some point," Mary laughs, "You've got have one or two of those."
The party and positivity keeps on keeping on with the rump shaking second single "Work That." Mary comments, "When I meet a woman who doesn't know what to do about her weight or her hair I always say -- 'whatever it is that you have, make that work for you, Work what you got.'"
After releasing her bestselling anthology "Reflections" last year, "Growing Pains" is Mary's first CD of new material since "The Breakthrough" debuted at #1 in 2005, selling over 700,000 copies its first week -- the best opening week for a solo R&B female artist in SoundScan history. The album's first single, "Be Without You," also made chart history by holding down the #1 spot on the Billboard R&B charts for a record breaking 16 straight weeks; making it the longest-running No. 1 song on the R&B chart in over 40 years. Mary led all artists with eight 2007 Grammy nominations for the landmark album, and she took home honors for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song (both for "Be Without You"), and Best R&B Album. After earning three Grammy Awards, she continued her award show domination by winning nine Billboard Music Awards, two American Music Awards, two BET Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, and a Soul Train Award. "The Breakthrough" lived up to its name selling over seven million copies worldwide.
You can witness the incredible magic of Mary J. Blige on television this week as she performs on "CNN Heroes: All All-Star Tribute" on December 6th and "Movies Rock!" on CBS on December 7th (both at 9 PM Eastern time). Mary will also bring in 2008 on New Year's Eve on MTV.

The Stories Contained in Song Lyrics
by Morgan Hamilton
In my opinion, music has the potential to alter the world. However, the changes still have to start with the person. You can learn the secrets of the ages through song lyrics if you are capable of listening to music very honestly. I began to understand the transformative power of listening to song lyrics through a set of lyrics written by Linda Rondstadt years ago. It goes, "I've been cheated. Been mistreated. When will I be loved?"
I was studying the book Beloved by Toni Morrison when I was in college. I had a paper due in one day, but I was completely stressed out because of other school pressures. As a result, I had no clue what to write about.
I wanted to get rid of some of the stress so I took a nap and woke to the lyrics of Ms. Rondstadt s song. It was buzzing in my ears, and I had the sudden feeling that I should pay close attention. Intuitively, I felt that the lyrics were important. The few lines from that song gave me all the insight I needed to write my paper in a very short time.
The line "When will I be loved?" turned out to be a doorway into my understanding of the book Beloved. I realized that the central character of the book just wanted to be loved. I was able to access enough creativity to write a terrific paper through that realization. I never again doubted the pure potentiality of song lyrics because of this experience. My experience is just one illustration of the power of song lyrics. I recommend that you always pay close attention to any song lyrics that run through your head. The lyrics are no longer our there when they run through your head. You should write down the lyrics of the song that you are singing. This way you will imbue them with meaning, and you will gain a better understanding of what they are trying to convey.
If you look carefully at what you are singing, then you can gain great self-awareness and wisdom. It would be unwise to assume that these are just random song lyrics running though you mind. Since you are choosing to sing them, they must have a message.
In general, the message is about something you wish you had or about something that makes you feel scared. You will uncover clues as to what your deepest values and beliefs are through the songs that you are singing. You should pay attention to the song lyrics that run through your head so that you can grow.

Can Writing Song Lyrics Change Your Life?
by Muna wa Wanjiru
Does listening to music have the potential to alter the world? Yes, it does. But the changes still have to start with you. If you learn how to listen to music very honestly, you can learn the secrets of the ages by writing song lyrics.
"I've been cheated. Been mistreated. When will I be Loved?" This set of lyrics written by Linda Rondstadt years ago gave rise to my understanding of the tansformative power of listening to and writing song lyrics. I was in college, studying the book Beloved, by Toni Morrison. I had a paper due in one day;' I was completely stressed out; and I had no clue what to write about.
I took a nap and woke to the lyrics of Ms. Rondstadts song. It was buzzing in my ears, and I had the sudden feeling that I should pay close attention. I intuitively felt that writing song lyrics were important.
They were.
Although I do not recall the precise details, the few lines from that song gave me all the insight I needed to write song lyric in a very short time. The line "When will I be loved?" was a doorway into my understanding of the song Beloved. I realized that the central character just wanted to be loved, and that was all I needed to know to access enough creativity to write a terrific song lyric. From that moment on I never doubted the pure potentiality of song lyrics.
The above is just one illustration of the power of writing song lyrics. Many more are possible. For instance, always pay close attention to any song lyrics that run through your head.
When lyrics run though your head, they stop being "out there." For all practical purposes, if you are singing the song lyrics, then you might as well have written them in the first place. You are imbuing them with meaning, and they are now "in" you, so to speak.
So, how so you benefit from this knowledge? By understanding that what you are writing the song lyric about, is about you. You can gain great self-awreness and wisdom by looking carefully at what you are singing. Do not assume that these are just random song lyrics running though your mind. They are not random. You are choosing to write them and they have a message.
The message is usually about something you wish you had or about something you are fearful of. The song you are singing offers you clues as to what your deepest values and beliefs are. These deep attitudes are what you need to uncover in order to become more self-aware and powerful. So next time song lyrics run thourgh your head or come onto the radio at an odd time, pay very close attention. They just might change your life or give you an answer you needed.

Los Angeles, CA (3/2/06 BlackNews.com) - Lil' Kim is one of the most successful and celebrated rappers in the business, as well as one of the most intriguing and glamorous stars in entertainment. Now, she's starring in her own reality series, and no channel is better suited than BET to bring Lil' Kim's story to the small screen. LIL' KIM: COUNTDOWN TO LOCKDOWN is a new half-hour series that vividly chronicles the petite rapper's last two weeks of freedom before surrendering herself to federal authorities. This six-episode docu-drama is produced in collaboration with Edmonds Entertainment and Queen Bee Entertainment, premiering on Thursday, March 9 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.

BET's cameras were allowed full access to Lil' Kim, her entourage and family before she headed off to a maximum-security prison in Pennsylvania. Sent there on a conviction for false testimony to a federal grand jury about a shootout involving members of her posse outside a New York City radio station, Lil' Kim was sentenced to one year and a day for protecting friends involved in the 2001 incident. Lil' Kim's loyalty proved to be a costly lesson -- one that Kim, her closest friends and associates will discuss in this series.
"We take an unblinking look at her life and her choices, and the consequences of those choices," says BET President of Entertainment Reginald Hudlin. "We do not turn away from the hard truth of what's going on."
Is Kimberly Jones a victim, a soldier or a fool for refusing to break the "no snitching" code of the streets? Watch, and then decide for yourself, offers Hudlin.
Over the course of fourteen unforgettable days, BET viewers ride along with the rap diva and fashion icon as she sorts out her business and legal affairs, makes her last few public appearances to promote her new CD, shoots a video, attends fashion week, shops, hits the party scene and says goodbye to friends and family before turning herself over to authorities. Viewers witness Lil' Kim, the superstar, making the physical transformation to becoming Kimberly Jones -- peeling off the layers of hair extensions, acrylic nails, false eyelashes and stage make-up. The cameras also capture her private moments as Lil' Kim attempts to come to grips with who she is and where she's headed. This remarkable journey is set to a soundtrack punctuated by the hypnotic grooves and skillfully-delivered rhymes from Lil' Kim's latest critically-acclaimed disc, "The Naked Truth," in stores now.
"I've always been fascinated by Lil' Kim," says executive producer Tracey Edmonds, who pitched the project to BET. "She's such a dynamic female, on so many different levels. She's a businesswoman. She's a recording icon. She's a fashion icon. Seeing everything she was trying accomplish, preparing to go away, and being so strong . . . it was really fascinating to spend time with her for two weeks on this roller coaster ride."
Also joining Lil' Kim on the journey is a colorful cast of characters including her legal team, manager, personal assistants, family and other members of her close-knit inner circle. They're all trying to deal with what's ahead for Kim and the impact on their lives of her imminent absence. By the time this series concludes, each will have helped viewers gain a whole new perspective on the diminutive, but larger-than-life rapper known as Lil' Kim.
Comprising the cast is:
Hillary - "The Manager"
This former manager of the Notorious B.I.G. is no-nonsense, no-frills, and doesn't play when it comes to managing the hectic career of Lil' Kim. Often described by members of Kim's entourage as a "b*tch", she is the glue that holds Kim's professional and personal life together.
Londell - "The Attorney"
He may have a corner office overlooking Manhattan and be part owner of an NBA franchise, but the Brooklyn native maintains an enviable balance of book and street smarts. A prominent entertainment attorney (not criminal attorney) whose famous clients include Prince, Stevie Wonder and Spike Lee, Londell is well known for protecting artist's rights. Kim looks up to him not only as her entertainment attorney and business manager, but as a big brother - and he protects her like family.
La La - "The Cousin"
La La is that family member everyone has, but tries to keep under wraps. Kim's cousin La La is a Brooklyn-born spitfire who doesn't mince words and has no fear. Deeply devoted to helping Kim during her last days of freedom, La La's role as Kim's personal assistant is getting in the way of her obligations at home to her husband and kids.
Gene - "The A&R Exec"
Although Gene is the A&R executive for "Queen Bee Records," his opinions on upcoming talent and music extend far beyond his title. Whether it's his thoughts on how to publicize Kim, Nate's acumen or Kirk's attitude, Gene has an opinion on everything. And he has no trouble vocalizing those opinions out loud, with plenty of expletives.
Tracy - "The Publicist"
Tracy is all over the place as Kim's publicist - negotiating photo shoot schedules, clearing all questions for Kim to answer behind the scenes at music shows and radio stations, down to approving Kim's wardrobe. She always ensures that Kim looks and sounds good in person and in the media.
Nate - "The Personal Assistant"
Young and committed to making Kim happy, Nate is the over-zealous, former "Queen Bee" intern who hung around long enough to get on the payroll. Nate's side projects sometimes get in the way of doing his job well, but He has Kim's best interest at heart.
Kirk - "The Music Video Director"
They call him "Kirk Lee" (a reference to Spike Lee). Upon realizing that she hates the video to her first single, "Lighter's Up," Kim quickly taps Kirk to direct not one, but three music videos for her in two weeks. This is a huge break and challenge for someone who has never directed a music video before. Kirk is a classic case of being in the right place at the right time, but some folks wonder if he can pull it off.
LIL' KIM: COUNTDOWN TO LOCKDOWN is an up-close-and-personal look inside the life of a controversial public icon and rap star. But, underneath the high-glam exterior is Kimberly Jones, a girl from the streets of Brooklyn. This groundbreaking reality series reveals the person behind the façade.
"You'll have a chance to really get a more intimate perspective on Kim, who she is and what her values are," Edmonds added. "She's not one to be underestimated. She has a lot of integrity. There were a lot of reasons why she made the decision that she did, and she was strong about facing the consequences and paying the price for it."
Editor's Note: Lil' Kim's latest critically-acclaimed release, "The Naked Truth," is in stores now. For more info, visit her website at www.lilkim.com. La Toya "Tragedy" Burns
Houston, TX (BlackNews.com) (2/1/06) - The attraction to precious diamonds has been spreading rampant throughout the world of hip-hop leaving its mark and influence. The exuberant stones are one of the most coveted material possessions and serve as a symbol of status and suggest a certain level of success within the culture. It is evidenced by the varying but widespread references of glaring diamonds blinding unsuspecting onlookers, wrists and necks being iced-out or diamonds being pressed against wood-grain steering wheels while rollin expensive foreign automobiles up and down the block. Bodily real estate also seems to be scarce as the number of artists making bling bling apart of their dental records is visibly increasing. This expanding fashion is known as wearing grills, yet another method for displaying the dazzling jewels as teeth serve as the billboard for advertisement. But what makes a diamond truly priceless and invaluable?
The answer lies deep beneath the surface and darkness of the earths core. To truly appreciate a diamond you must first appreciate the process. It takes eons for a diamond to form in the midst of constant exposure to extremely intense pressure and unbearably hot temperatures. Its that contrasting process that has made La Toya "Tragedy" Burns, a petite but sightly, powerful yet humble, female rap artist out of Houston, Texas, such an inestimable find.
From the moment she was crowned as the Roll Call Queen, over 11 years ago on Houston's KBXX 97.9 (Mad Hatta Show) in 1994, she has had to endure many fiery tests as well as overcome the constant pressures by many industry movers and shakers, to compromise.
Early experiences working with several production powerhouses including super-producer Jazzy Phae and P. Diddy's then Bad Boy Hit Man J-Dubb, had the potential and promise to propel her rap career fast forward. However, a change of heart and change of direction led to a change of pace!
A renewed commitment to a higher purpose for her life and music led to many delays, struggles and challenges along the way. Success as many viewed it, was slowly slipping out of her grasp. It would take another eight years and many uphill battles, but her tenacity, determination and above all her faith, would not prove false in the end.
Now armed with the multi-platinum production of Sean Blaze Henderson (50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin) and national distribution through Holy Hip Hop/EMI, The stage has once again been set for this Southern Jewel to Sparkle on her upcoming release - Princess Cut.

"Our Uncle Sam" by Erik Greene
Tinley Park, IL (BlackNews.com 3/20/06) - Some of the greatest advancements in modern music are credited to an artist who died over 40 years ago, yet only lived to be 33-Sam Cooke. Now his dynamic achievements are remembered in his most intimate biography to date, "Our Uncle Sam: The Sam Cooke Story From His Family's Perspective" (Trafford Publishing, $22.50, www.ourunclesam.com), written by his great-nephew Erik Greene.
After six years as the reigning voice in gospel music, Cooke burst onto the pop scene with the 1957 release of his million-selling single, You Send Me. The song's innovative blend of Gospel, Pop, and R&B earned him the title of "The Man Who Invented Soul" and stayed on the charts an amazing 26 weeks, rising to #1 in both the Pop and R&B markets. The next single he'd release, I'll Come Running Back to You, soared to #1 on the R&B charts as well. Cooke would eventually chart an amazing 34 Top 40 R&B hits over his eight year pop career, with most like You Send Me and I'll Come Running Back to You written by Sam himself. Cooke also wrote and recorded such classics as Chain Gang, Only Sixteen, Cupid, Wonderful World, Having a Party and A Change is Gonna Come, and was among the original inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In "Our Uncle Sam", Greene not only emphasizes Sam Cooke's accomplishments in music history, but gives the reader an inside look on the childhood influences that drove him to excel. Sam adopted his winning attitude from his strict but loving father, the late Rev. Charles Cook, Sr., who taught his children to never give less than their best effort and stressed the importance of family unity. "My mother and father were both family oriented, and they instilled in us 'all for one and one for all'," Sam's youngest sister Agnes remembers. "We were a very tight, close-knit family. If you had a problem with one of us, you had a problem with all of us."
The Sam Cooke saga is a remarkable one, and is best retold by his closest family members. "Our Uncle Sam" follows Cooke from his days growing up in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood to his rise as a Gospel and R&B superstar and music industry entrepreneur. It takes the reader behind the scenes with intimate family photos and the compelling testimonies of his brothers, sister, nieces, nephews and children.
The general public knew Sam Cooke as a singer, songwriter, and producer whose musical style has often been imitated but never equaled. Now, the intimate facets of his life are explored in detail in "Our Uncle Sam"-from the driving force behind his success, to the special moments spent with family, to the pressing issues he faced in the last years of his life. Hear Sam Cooke's story as it should be told--by the people who knew him long before he became a household name.
Erik Greene is the grandson of Sam's oldest sister, Mary. "Our Uncle Sam: The Sam Cooke Story From His Family's Perspective" can be ordered through www.ourunclesam.com or by calling (888) 232-4444 toll-free in the USA and Canada.

Beyonce, Outkast, Usher and Lil Jon Lead Nominations as BET Invades the Kodak Theatre for Star-Studded Live Telecast Featuring Today's Brightest Stars
Humanitarian Honoree Danny Glover and Lifetime Achievement Recipients The Isley Brothers Headline Parade of Honorees
Hollywood, CA - (5/12/04) On Tuesday, June 29, a star power-infused "black-out" will descend upon Hollywood when BET takes control of the prestigious Kodak Theatre to honor some of Black entertainment's leading lights at BET AWARDS '04. At a press conference today in Hollywood, BET signaled that the countdown has begun for the celebrated network to blaze into Hollywood recognizing the best-of-the-best in music, sports and acting. R&B's hottest leading lady Beyonce, Dirty South luminaries Outkast and Lil Jon, R&B superstar Usher, and newcomer Kanye West top the 2004 list of BET AWARDS nominees, with Outkast nabbing a record-setting six nods for work from their double CD "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below," including multiple nominations in the Viewer's Choice and Video of the Year categories for "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move." Outkast also scored Best Collaboration and Best Group nominations. Beyonce was close behind with five nominations, including Best Actress and Best Female R&B Artist, and was nominated for her "Crazy In Love" Jay-Z duet scoring in Best Collaboration, Viewer's Choice and Video of the Year categories. Lil' John and Usher each netted four nominations, and Kanye West grabbed three. One of the Original Queens of Comedy also takes center stage as Mo'Nique, star of the UPN Network's The Parkers, reprises her role as the first-ever female host of the BET AWARDS telecast.
Some of the brightest stars in music, acting and sports are slated to appear and perform at BET's triumphant Hollywood return, joined by a veritable Hollywood "A-list" of nominees and presenters. Janet Jackson, Usher, Outkast and The Isley Brothers are among the artists expected to light up the stage with their high-wattage performances.
Danny Glover, Award-winning actor, executive producer and activist, and Rock & Roll Hall of Famers The Isley Brothers are the top honorees at the star-studded BET AWARDS '04 show. Glover, the Humanitarian Awardee and The Isley Brothers, the Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, will lead an all-star parade of performers, presenters and nominees.
BET has teamed again with Cossette Productions, famed producers of the Grammy Awards and the past three record-setting BET AWARDS shows, to handle production of the telecast. Last year's BET AWARDS telecast netted an overall 4.27 Nielsen rating with a whopping 30.0 rating among African Americans (5.5 million households), setting a new precedent as the most-watched entertainment special in BET's 24-year history. The BET AWARDS show has generated higher ratings with African-American viewers than any other awards telecast - including the GRAMMY Awards ®, the Soul Train Awards, Vibe Awards, NAACP Image Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards, among others.
"Last year's BET Awards ceremony and telecast was a fantastic show with some once-in-a-lifetime moments," said Debra Lee, BET President and Chief Operating Officer. "In addition, we again outperformed all other, more well-established Awards shows in the ratings, which is a significant accomplishment. We've clearly delivered something that our viewers truly enjoy. Each year our production gets more exciting and this year will not disappoint."
BET kicks off its spectacular showcase with a special 106 & PARK: Live from the Red Carpet pre-show presentation hosted by AJ and Free from 6 - 8 p.m. ET/PT*, capturing the sizzling fashions and arrival excitement of Hollywood's glamour set. The scene then shifts inside to the Kodak Theatre for the highly-anticipated three-hour "live" awards telecast at its new time of 8 p.m. ET/PT* when BET salutes 16 categories across the music, sports and entertainment spectrum. As an early appetizer, viewers can get a sneak peak at BET AWARDS '04 and the featured honorees starting with I WANNA THANK MY MOMMA: BET AWARDS Nomination Special on Tuesday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET. BET will highlight the artists who are nominated and get predictions from the street on who will take home the hardware; a special award show edition of HOW I'M LIVING features a look at some of the homes of nominated artists and show participants; a special 106 & PARK PRE-AWARDS show on Monday, June 28 at 6 p.m. ET/PT. Then, go behind the scenes of the hottest awards show in the nation on June 28 at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT as ACCESS GRANTED: Behind The Scenes of the Awards Show gives viewers an insider's look at the ins-and-outs of putting together BET's biggest night of the year. A BET NIGHTLY NEWS Special: Live from BET AWARDS '04 wraps up the night with a post-show look at the festivities from 11:00 p.m. ET/PT*.
BET viewers have a unique opportunity to experience the action and excitement of the BET AWARDS up-close-and-personal this year by attending the ceremony. Beginning today, May 12, tickets go on sale through all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com. BET AWARDS '04 ticket prices range from $75 - $500.
The BET online audience also has several opportunities to get in on the Awards Show hype - from May 10 - May 26, users can prove their status as a BET "fan-atic" by entering the BET Ultimate Fan Sweepstakes, sponsored by Reebok. One lucky grand prize winner and a guest will receive round trip air travel, four days and three nights hotel stay, $5,000 and two tickets to BET AWARDS '04 show. What's more, BET's Ultimate Fan will have the opportunity to be a co-presenter of the Viewer's Choice Award at the ceremony with AJ & Free, hosts of BET's ultra-popular video countdown show, 106 & PARK. To enter, viewers submit a photo to www.BET.com/ultimatefan along with a personal statement discussing why they should be selected as the "Ultimate Fan." BET's online community will select the Grand Prize winner from 5 finalists between May 26 and June 2. Contest rules and details are also available at www.BET.com/ultimatefan
In addition, BET viewers can also become "virtual" members of the BET Awards voting academy by logging onto www.bet.com to cast their votes for their favorite performer in the BET.com Viewer's Choice poll, which will take place in "real-time" during the course of the telecast. Viewers can tune in to the ceremony to see if their chosen performer won the Viewer's Choice award, and also check out other interactive features.
While keeping most of the production plans under wraps, Stephen Hill, BET's Senior Vice President of Music Programming and Talent, said the combination of high-caliber performances, the legendary stature of the special honorees and the teamwork of the BET production team with Cossette Productions should make for another sensational telecast. Additional announcements regarding more celebrity performers and presenters will be issued as part of an ongoing series of awards-related announcements leading up to the June 29 event and telecast.
"Each year we try to make the show more dynamic than the previous year," said Hill. "Last year Michael Jackson and James Brown wowed viewers with a surprise on-stage appearance. In keeping with this year's theme we're coming in '04 with something bigger, better and badder if you can believe that, and it's going to be huge."
Hill added, "Bringing Mo'Nique back is the perfect sequel. We are so pleased to have Mo'Nique running things again. Who knows what she will do, but who cares...we know that she is going to bring it. This time she's got ammo that she's not even telling us about and we love that!"
Major sponsors for this year's BET AWARDS telecast include Reebok (RBK), General Motors, Procter & Gamble and Pepsi. To ensure ratings success, a multi-tiered marketing strategy has been developed to support the telecast, including print, television, radio and outdoor advertising, as well as a significant grassroots promotional campaign and special tie-ins to other Viacom-owned companies.
BET will televise encore presentations of the BET AWARDS '04 on Tuesday, July 13 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Vernon Neilly - Accomplished Musician and Founder of Boosweet Records
Los Angeles, CA - (3/10/04) There are some people that say that the guitar isn't a good fit to headline a Smooth Jazz track. There are critics who snubbed the guitar laden CD for it's edgy approach to the genre. All that aside, the votes are in and the CD "G-Fire" is still winning listeners at Smooth Jazz commercial radio all across the U.S., and internationally as well.
"G-Fire", the Smooth Jazz/Jazz Fusion guitar CD from black owned and operated Los Angeles based independent record label Boosweet Records, recently won a much deserved award from the world's most listened to Internet station for Smooth Jazz music, smoothjazz.com, in the form of a "Smoothie Award". Airplay information was compiled from reporting stations in the Smooth Jazz genre nationally, and the Top 20 most played independent releases for 2003 were given awards, "G-Fire" finished #13 in this category. When the originator and producer of the "G-Fire" CD project, Vernon Neilly, was asked what he felt about the success of "G-Fire", he commented, "although the playing field in this genre is very uneven for African Americans because of the politics that exist, but through hard and dedicated promotional work from my staff at Boosweet Records, and the independent promoters I hired that believed in the project, we were able to make a decent showing. The DJ's out there who had the guts to play the CD, and the consumers all around the world who have bought "G-Fire" are proof positive that it's a good CD."
"G-Fire", which was a perfect acronym from it's name (Guitars On Fire), and features 4 of the worlds most respected and talented session and touring guitarist. Vernon Neilly (Teena Marie, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Howard Hewitt), produced as well as performed on this dynamic guitar compilation. Vernon was joined by a complete cast of great guitarist in Morris O'Connor (Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight), Kevin Chokan who is the musical director for legendary soulstress Diana Ross, and guitarist for Jeffrey Osborn. Rounding out the group is an awesome Brazilian progressive guitarist named Miguel Mega. These great guitarist combined to produce one monster guitar CD that is still winning over fans of smooth jazz/jazz fusion worldwide.
Riding the recent successes of "G-Fire", Vernon Neilly will be touring throughout the year. His supporting cast consist of Juan Nelson on bass (Ben Harper), Larry Darrell on drums (Norman Brown, Monica), Norman Weatherly on keys (Ike Turner, Rose Royce), and Ed Neal also on keys (Dramatics). The group will be teaming up and performing in support of "G - Fire" on March 30th at the famed Jazz & Blues hotspot Catalina's Bar & Grille in Hollywood, CA. You can also see Vernon Neilly in Warner Bros "Starsky and Hutch, and Universal's "Along Came Polly" motion pictures, currently at theaters internationally.
