Duration: end of each 9 weeks of the 2006-2007 school year

Guidelines:

• teachers nominate students based on two criteria
• teachers submit nominations via e-mail to info@dvercity.com

Criteria:

• well-rounded student (provide examples of extracurricular activies i.e., church, sports, clubs)
• outstanding volunteerism
• Lewis Middle School, Ruckel Middle School, or Niceville High student

Free SAT Essay Writing Workshops

Free SAT essay writing workshops for Niceville high school students. First-come, first-serve advanced registration. Limited Seats. Students will be placed on a waiting list for future workshops if the scheduled workshop fills up.

Time: 2-hour block (TBA based on number of registrants)

Pre-registration required: The deadline for registration is Saturday, October 14, 2006. Fill out a registration form, in person, at the seminar site noted above. Space is limited and will be based on the number of registrants. Space will be filled on a "first come, first serve" basis, in order of priority. Priority will be given to those students who show proof of registration. You will be notified via e-mail with the time of your seminar.

DverCITY Book Scholarship - Spring 2007

Deadline: November 20, 2006

Several $100 book scholarships will be awarded to students of Okaloosa-Walton Community College, University of West Florida FWB campus and Eglin AFB, and Troy State University/Eglin AFB for spring semester.

Criteria: Write a 500-word essay about what diversity means to you. Give examples of things that you have done in your life to exhibit diversity and multiculturalism.

Submission: Submit essay, along with contact information, in person , to DverCITY, Inc., located at 98 S. John Sims Pkwy, Valparaiso, FL 32580.

Children's Art and Poetry Contest

Deadline: November 30

Open to ages up to 12 years old. Draw a picture and/or write a poem about what diversity means to you.

Award: winners will receive a personalized t-shirt emblazoned with their artwork and poetry

Serenity Prayer

Footprints in the Sand

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.

“Lord, You said that once I decided to follow You, You’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed You most You would leave me.”

The Lord replied, “My son, My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”
