Harvest Eating and Chef Keith Snow Take Aim at Fad Diets

Seasonal, Organic and Local Eating Lifestyle Promotes Long-Term Health and Sustainability

GREENVILLE, S.C., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Harvest Eating and its founder Chef Keith Snow are taking aim at fad diets. For years, Americans have been sold "lose weight fast solutions" as tools for living a better life. Harvest Eating combines the enjoyment of seasonal, organic and local foods with the latest web video functionality to prove the health benefits, as well as overall environmental benefits of following a healthy eating lifestyle.

With nearly a quarter of Americans buying organic products once a week and approximately 70% of the total U.S. Internet audience viewing videos online each month, Harvest Eating is using the latest market trends to send a healthy, positive food message into the marketplace. Visitors to harvesteating.com learn about the benefits of eating seasonal, organic and local foods and where to find them. Then, they have access to a full video recipe database where Chef Snow shows them how to prepare the foods in simple, easy-to-follow methods through streaming videos. Each recipe has been designed to highlight the healthy ingredients while making the user look like a star in the kitchen.

"Harvest Eating really is important to me for a number of reasons," said Chef Keith Snow, Harvest Eating's founder. "For years I've watched people fall prey to fad diets promising a multitude of benefits that are simply not sustainable, nor healthy. Harvest Eating is an opportunity to use my 20 years of culinary experience to promote long-term health and sustainability for the people who use it and for the environment as a whole."

Chef Keith Snow, a 20-year culinary expert and a nationally respected authority on seasonal, organic and local foods, founded Harvest Eating in 2006. Harvesteating.com was re-launched in July 2007 to provide a progressive, welcoming resource for those seeking to adopt a healthier lifestyle through seasonal, organic and local foods. Harvest Eating TV is currently in production with a tentative National Public Television debut date in early 2008.

Eating a Healthy Diet

by Connie Limon

What is eating a healthy diet? A healthy diet should include eating a variety of foods from the basic food groups. The basic food groups are:

• Protein (meat, eggs, legumes) • Dairy Products • Fruits and Vegetables • Grains (breads and pasta) • Fats and Sweets

It is more difficult than you realize to actually eat a healthy diet. You might end up eating a whole lot of your favorite foods and not enough from one of the other groups just because you don’t like that particular group of food. You might be pressed for time almost all the time and you are forced to opt for convenience over quality when you get hungry.

You need do some planning in order to really maintain a healthy eating pattern. It takes effort to eat the recommended daily allowances from each food group. You will need to look closely at what you are eating now and then make plans to implement healthier eating habits.

Keeping a food diary of everything you eat and drink for one week should be sufficient enough to tell you if you are on the right track or if you need to make some changes.

For example, add a yogurt as a snack if you find you are not meeting your daily requirement for milk servings. Add some strawberries or other berries (berry fruit is better because they contain more antioxidants) to your cereal to obtain an extra serving of fruit. An 8 ounce glass of orange juice everyday can serve as another serving. An 8 ounce glass of cranberry juice everyday can serve as another serving. I can’t stand tomato juice, but if you can stand it, a small can of tomato juice serves as one vegetable serving. If you are pressed for time, adding these quick and easy items to your daily routine can help you meet the daily requirements for each food group.

The new dietary guidelines recommend 2 cups of fruit and 2 and /2 cups of vegetables per day. You ought to be able to meet that requirement fairly easily.

Set a weekly goal for yourself and continue to maintain your food diary. Weekly goals could be as simple as to order a salad for lunch instead of your regular French fries, or to bring a favorite flavor of yogurt to work every day.

Once you begin to really think about your diet, keep the diary, make changes where necessary it begins to get easier to meet the new daily recommended requirements for a healthy diet.

A special note for those of us who have a sweet tooth is just simply limit how often you eat those “forbidden” types of food.

I live in an area where there is an excellent donut bakery shop. These donuts are fresh out of the oven by 5:30 a.m. and I want to tell you these things are absolutely delicious. The baker is one man who says he will take his recipe to the grave, will not even leave it behind for his only daughter, not that I wanted the recipe or anything. I was content filling the donuts, stacking them in the shelf, sneaking bites here and there. And the real treat was it was Saturday, the shop was closed on Sunday. Whatever was leftover this day we could all take home at closing. I took 100’s of donuts home that year.

I worked for this donut shop about one year, and had so much fun getting fat and eating all those forbidden donuts.

It was fun while it lasted, but all good things seem to have to come to an end quicker than you want them to. From the time this donut shop opened in my area when I was around 20 years old I wanted to work there. I never really could work in this little donut shop because I always had so much better paying and nicer jobs. There came a day, however, when I transferred into the same town where this little donut shop was and it was easier for me to at least work part-time there.

It was a Saturday morning job. I did not mind getting up at 3:00 a.m. to be there by 5:00 a.m. on Saturday morning because I knew first thing I was going to make the coffee and start sampling those delicious donuts. It was a very personal treat and reward for me for about a year. I only earned about $50 on this day. The treat was seeing how those donuts were prepared “in person” and getting to sample all of them. Boy did I have a good time in that job! I still want to go back to that Saturday morning job. I just still have other things more interesting to do and Lord knows at age 50 now I don’t need the extra fat, sugar and calories.

It would be too much of a temptation to overeat again and probably really get myself in trouble. I did end up with teeth that hurt more during that year I worked and ate at the Donut shop! I told my dentist, well the reason might just be this donut shop I been working at every Saturday…….Food is one of life’s great pleasures.

In conclusion here, you can make simple enough changes to your daily diet to meet the requirements for a healthy eating pattern. That donut shop had the biggest, roundest, cinnamon rolls I ever saw………….and blueberry cake donuts just would melt in your mouth………

Anyway, I am really on a personal journey now to turn myself around and eat healthier. You can do it too!

Detoxification Diets

A Detoxification Diet

by Hazel Leo

While healthy people may be able to go on a detox diet, not have any complications, and potentially even benefit from it, a person that is not at their best should see a doctor before taking part in it.

When discussing detoxification many think of a lengthy fast, consuming nothing but water. Even though fasting only with water is good it can be to extreme for most people and isn't always the best method. Relieving fatigue is another reason to pursue body detox methods. By using detox methods such as detox foot patches and detox recipes, one can aid in alleviating fatigue which has been plaguing them in the past.

I highly recommend this herbal blend and easy detoxification process to anyone who is interested in physical and spiritual cleansing. Here's what I found: Herbal lung detoxes are designed to promote a healthy respiratory system by cleansing and detoxifying the lungs and bronchial passages.

A detoxification diet is usually very simple, consisting, of whole foods, fruits, vegetables, grains, lots of water and lean, (non-organ or cured) meats. Salt and sugar is normally not allowed. It is not a starvation diet, but a way to rest and re-balance your system.

Eating foods that are high in sugar and saturated fats, along with too much caffeine and alcohol can trigger premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in many women. PMS is controlled by the hormone estrogen - too much or too little causes moods to fluctuate, depression, anxiety, food cravings and bloating about a week before a period begins.

To help keep estrogen levels balanced, avoid cravings for sweet and salty foods since they will magnify PMS symptoms, notes Sam Graci, nutritional researcher and author of the new book - The Food Connection: The Right Food at the Right Time. Stay away from dairy products and meats that are high in saturated fats, as well as caffeinated beverages, which raise the blood levels of estrogen and cause headaches, irritability and anxiety.

The skin is one of the body's main organs and can eliminate around 10% of all waste from the body. It does this mainly through sweating, we loose moisture through the skin 24/7 even though we're not aware of it. It's a natural process and of course your facial skin is included in this. Detox Diets are recommended for improving resistance to disease, mental state, digestion, strengthens the organs involved in detox. Some water soluble toxins may escape the liver detoxification, but these are then eliminated through the kidneys. Your skin too helps in the process of body detoxification by eliminating toxins through sweat and skin rashes.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can range from uncomfortable to life threatening, depending on the severity of the addiction, and detoxification can help with this process. It is important to detox your body on a regular basis in order to purify yourself, on the inside and out. Therefore, detoxification is the process of cleansing one’s self through various body detox means. There are a few different ways to engage in body detox and reasons to detox your body which will be described in the paragraphs which follow.

To help reduce symptoms of PMS and balance estrogen levels, eat at least two to three servings of colourful fruit and a large leafy green salad, along with whole grains such as oatmeal or seven-grain cereal. These foods are high in fibre, which helps keep estrogen levels balanced. In addition, start each day with a nutritional supplement such as greens+™, a balanced formula of 23 vitamins, minerals, organic and nutrient-rich foods. One serving of greens+ is the equivalent of six organic salads. The nutritional supplement also packs plenty of natural soy ingredients, which contain phytoestrogens to keep estrogen levels balanced.

In addition to fibre and soy, eat plenty of "good" fats - Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids (EFA). Fish such as salmon or tuna are the best source of these EFAs, which are said to help reduce headaches, irritability and anxiety.

We are aiming here to rid the body of garbage therefore it's important to make the diet as light and healthy as possible but to have something you can live with for at least 2 weeks. It's no good going on a herbal tea and brown rice diet if you can only do it for two days!

Another body detox method which you can use when you wish to detox your body is detox recipes which are available in detox cookbooks. As certain foods work to detoxify one’s body and rid the individual of the various toxins within, these foods can be combined in such a manner in which to work together to get the full body detox results.

More on detox diets at http://www.diet-detox.info Detox diets are designed to help your body rid itself of the toxic matter buildup and lose weight. If you feel sluggish, have frequent colds, digestive problems or just aren't feeling your best, you may have a toxicity issue. A detox diet will help you clean the harmful matter from your body and lose weight.

The important thing to remember is that not all things that are good for the body are going to feel nice. Sometimes it has to hurt if it is to heal! Most people that complete a detox program will tell you that a little gas and a few headaches is a small price to pay for the increase in health and wellbeing that many receive. Detox diets vary, but they typically advise restriction of the diet to raw vegetables, fruit, water and yoghurt

Most contend that the cravings for alcohol, both physical and psychological, will remain long after it is out of the system. Counseling and continued treatment is required to help the patient change their attitudes and resist returning to alcohol use.

All That Potassium!

by Hazel Leo

Our bodies contain toxic waste accumulations, mucus, parasites and worms, excess fat, fluid buildup (cellulite), old and hardened fecal matter buildup, and many more unsightly and odorous things that play a pivotal role in sabotaging our health.

After the mind and body detox you'll be more prepared to make the lifestyle changes in eating habits and thought processes needed for a more enjoyable life.

There are a few different reasons why you may want to detox your body. The first is to work to alleviate stress which builds up in the body. As body detox relates not only to physical detoxification but mental detoxification as well, you can use various detox methods to detox your body if you want to relieve stress. I highly recommend this herbal blend and easy detoxification process to anyone who is interested in physical and spiritual cleansing. Here's what I found: Herbal lung detoxes are designed to promote a healthy respiratory system by cleansing and detoxifying the lungs and bronchial passages.

Detoxification is a process and can be a gentle cleansing or a more rigorous therapy, where many foods are completely avoided over a long period of time. The detoxifying program you would choose would depend for the most part on the condition of your elimination system and your ove-rall health.

Bananas: All That Potassium And Carmen Miranda Too!

"…We have old-fashioned tomahto, Long Island potahto, but Yes, we have no bananas. We have no bananas today.."- Folk song by Frank Silver and Irving Cohen (1923) Whether you are off to Rio following the colorful trail of Carmen Miranda’s fruit-filled hat or seated on your couch contemplating the universe, the banana can always come along for the ride. There are so many aspects to this strange and wonderful fruit. Even its shape is a bit mysterious; conjuring images of tropical islands and sun-filled days. Did you know that the word "banana" originates from the Arabic and means finger? Doesn’t that make you wonder where the rest of the hand is? I have been hooked on bananas ever since I was a child, and Miss Chiquita, drawn by Dik Brown who also created the Campbell kids, used to sing to me through the television in my parents’ living room. (I always wondered why she never had her own show. She was so much cuter than Ed Sullivan.) You remember her words:

I’m Chiquita Banana and I’m here to say

Bananas need to ripen in a special way

When they are flecked with brown and have a golden hue

Bananas taste the best and are the best for you.

The banana is so popular in America today that four million tons of them are imported every year. Not to compare apples to oranges, but rather apples to bananas, a banana has less water, fifty percent more food energy, four times the protein, half the fat, twice the carbohydrate, almost three times the phosphorus, five times the Vitamin C and iron and at least twice the other vitamins and minerals as a single apple! The average American eats 33 pounds of bananas a year. An excellent source of potassium and carbohydrates, they can be eaten any time of the day because of their digestive properties. Natural sugar provides energy for those sports requiring endurance and low proportions of sodium chloridium render a good recommendation for salt free diets.

That’s all quite impressive, I know, but where did the banana come from in the first place? Did it arrive as a conundrum along with the chicken or the egg, or did both of them precede it? Buddhist texts from 600bc mention the banana for the first time in history. Alexander The Great tasted bananas in the Indus Valley in 327bc and in his day they were called pala. China records the presence of banana plantations as far back as 200ad (way before the birth of Scarlet O’Hara). In 650 ad Islamic conquerors brought bananas back to Palestine and through trade spread them all over Africa. They were unknown to the New World until 1516 when the first root stocks were brought here by Spanish missionary, Father Tomas de Berlanger. So much for traveling. How do they grow? The whole matter is extremely confusing. The banana tree itself (even though it is not a tree but a giant plant) is by definition an herb. What is an herb? Without passing go or collecting $200, the answer is a flowering plant with a fleshy, rather than woody, stem. Each stem consists of ten to fourteen hands, each carrying from eighteen to twenty bananas. The stem, however is a false one, formed by tightly wrapped overlapping leaves, resembling stalks of celery. The plant belongs to the same family as lilies, orchids and palms and the fruit is a berry. By definition, a berry is a simple fruit having a skin surrounding one or more seeds in a fleshy pulp. A banana cut lengthwise will reveal very tiny black seeds within its center. Therefore, a banana is a fruit, herb, berry and plant all at the same time. The expression "going bananas" probably came into vogue during the time all of these terms were being defined, don’t you think?

The most common is called Chlordiazepoxide. While I do not like the use of drugs in most cases, I do concede that in certain instances, such as this, they can be extremely helpful and effective in helping someone to recover from a harmful addiction. Some water soluble toxins may escape the liver detoxification, but these are then eliminated through the kidneys. Your skin too helps in the process of body detoxification by eliminating toxins through sweat and skin rashes.

Detoxification is the process of releasing and expelling the stored toxins through the elimination organs of your body - the intestines, liver, lungs, kidneys and skin.

There are a few different ways in which individuals go about pursuing an overall body detox. Some methods are used individually as body detox solutions while other individuals use several methods together to achieve the best possible results. Detoxification therapy is the oldest known medical treatment on earth; it is a completely natural and necessary process to get you healthy and feeling your best. If you’ve never done an official detox program, you are long overdue for a cleansing experience that will give you renewed energy, reduced food cravings, an improved metabolism, clear radiant skin, better sleep, and a stronger immune system.

There are about four hundred different varieties of this fabulous fruit, but don’t tell Carmen Miranda. (Apart from the fact that she is dead and you couldn’t possibly, there is no way the woman could fit one more piece of anything on top of one of her hats!) The three chief imported brands are Chiquita, Bonita and Fyffes. The Chiquita (according to her whom I trust implicitly) is always a guarantee of quality. Its production sites are located in Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica and Columbia. The Bonita banana hails from Ecuador and is the cheapest of the three, but only because it is never advertised. Fyffe’s founded in 1888, has the distinction of being the oldest fruit brand in the world. These bananas are produced in Belize, Columbia, Honduras, Suriname, Jamaica and The Windward Islands. Harvesting is a race against time that starts while the banana is still green. From harvest to delivery at the supermarket twenty days remain before spoilage occurs. Transportation is done with specialized refrigerated cargo ships, each containing some 250,000 boxes of bananas collected the day before. The bananas are stocked in "ripening rooms" for six to eight days at a temperature that can not exceed 14.5C. This temperature allows a homogenous ripening of the bananas of different sizes.

The color of a banana’s skin indicates its degree of ripeness, but here is a more precise guide. Green bananas are not ripe, but can be safely used in soups and stews. Yellow with green tips indicates the fruit is partially ripe and it can be broiled, baked or fried. All yellow bananas are ripe and are best eaten raw or baked into cakes or pies. Yellow bananas with brown freckles are fully ripe and can be eaten raw, in a salad or in any other dishes calling for uncooked fruit. All brown bananas are over ripe, but if the flesh is firm they are still in prime eating condition. Blackened areas indicate bruised fruit and should be avoided.

Bananas can be utilized in hundreds of dishes prepared in as many ways. Roasted, fried, broiled, par boiled, baked, sautéed or eaten raw, the results are always delicious. They wear many hats, so to speak, and can serve as relishes, stuffing for goose, duck, turkey or chicken, sauces, spreads, jellies, jams, candies, cake and pie filling, flour for breads and fresh fruit in salads. There is little that one cannot do with a banana ( except maybe pay a utility bill.) I am sure that Carmen Miranda loved bananas in every way, but dying as she did at such an early age, I wonder if she didn’t put more of them on her hats than she ever ate. Chiquita could have told her the truth, but would she have listened? Somehow I tend to doubt that those two would have ever gotten along!

The human body is like one big process of input and output. Some things we intake such as food and water which the body requires diffuse into the body; we then pass the by-products which are of no use, or surplus to the body's requirements. Drugs, on the other hand, diffuse almost entirely into the body as this is what they are designed to do.

The patch is applied directly to the bottom of an individual’s foot. It is best to place the patch on the foot before bedtime and keep it there all through the night so that it can achieve the greatest results.

Using a detox diet plan can help maximize your health, reduce your weight, and help you feel more energetic and rested. Try a detox diet for a few days. You'll be surprised how much lighter you'll feel.

The important thing to remember is that not all things that are good for the body are going to feel nice. Sometimes it has to hurt if it is to heal! Most people that complete a detox program will tell you that a little gas and a few headaches is a small price to pay for the increase in health and wellbeing that many receive. As one of the most common causes of lethargy is constipation, learn more about colon detox today

Detoxification only addresses the physical issues of alcoholism, though, and many professional endorse a combined therapy that includes counseling or a 12 step program to follow the detoxification process.

What I Know For Sure About Diet

by Jinjee Talifero - 2/27/04

We all know there is a problem with the Standard American Diet (SAD). But we
are all confused about all the different diet solutions out there. After
studying all the diets from Aromatrim to The Zone as a current Nutrition
Research Assistant at Ekaya Institute of Living Food Education (E.I.L.F.E) I
have come to realize what I do know for sure and what I don't.

For sure, the current Standard American Diet is toxic. Junk food, fast food,
processed food, packaged food, factory-farmed food, produce grown in
chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, and known
toxins such as alcohol, coffee, and sugar, are for sure bad for your body.
Meat and dairy are toxic and therefore probably also bad for you. When I say
meat and dairy are toxic I'm looking at the fact that you can not eat them
raw. This means that these foods are crawling with harmful bacteria that
need to be killed by heating the foods. To my common sense this invalidates
meat and dairy as foods fit for human consumption. If you can't eat it raw,
if you have to cook it and kill it to eat it, then it isn't meant to be your
food. Food is fruit that grows on trees. The Creator gave us trees for
breathing, housing, and eating. Trees are our true cousins here on earth.
Food is vegetation coming from the ground. These are full of nutrients,
vitamins and minerals from the earth, the sun, the air, and the rain. These
are definitely food. Should we eat animals? I'm not sure but I do remember
reading somewhere that "Thou Shalt Not Kill". Should we eat dairy? I don't
know. Does it make sense to consume a food that was designed to grow a baby
calf into a 1000 lb. animal? Personally, I suspect that dairy is harmful to
the human body.

However, your own beliefs and the collective beliefs of humanity do have a
huge effect on your health. If people believe that meat and dairy are good
for you, then they probably are. If they believe that meat and dairy are
harmful for you, then they probably are. It depends in part on your own
beliefs, and it depends in part on the beliefs of the collective human race.
Furthermore, your beliefs have an effect on the beliefs of the collective
and the beliefs of the collective have an effect on your beliefs. And at
this moment there is a major shifting of beliefs going on. If you are strong
in your own beliefs you can withstand and even influence the collective. It
seems as though the collective, the critical mass of the collective human
race, is shifting to a view that meat and dairy are not healthy to eat. Now,
perhaps the truth of the matter is that The Creator and his fabulous crew
did not make meat and dairy to be our food. Or the truth of the matter might
be that they did intend it to be our food. However as I believe that we live
on a basically good planet that is evolving in the right direction ever
towards the good (despite the political and social events that would make it
seem otherwise) I would place my bets that this shift away from meat and
dairy is a change for the better towards a truer and clearer reality.

What I do know for sure is that we should avoid known toxins and chemicals.
All packaged food has chemical preservatives, stabilizers, and flavoring.
These are very harmful. This I know. All food that is not organically grown
is grown using chemicals that harm the human body. This I know.
Factory-farmed animals are sick and should not be eaten. This I know for
sure. Can we live on unheated exclusively vegan (no meat and dairy) food? I
know that my family is thriving on a raw-vegan diet. I see my husband who
has eaten no meat or dairy for over 30 years thriving and aging much less
rapidly than his peers. If you do eat meat, eat only organic meat. If you do
consume dairy, consume only organic dairy.  If you do eat cooked food make
it from scratch with organic ingredients.

Here is my "What I Know For Sure About Healthy Eating Chart":

FOR SURE BAD:
coffee
alcohol
sugar
processed food
commercial (non-organic) produce
fast food
junk food

PROBABLY BAD:
meat
dairy
any heated foods
dehydrated foods

FOR SURE GOOD:
organic fresh fruit
organic fresh vegetables
organic germinated nuts
organic germinated seeds

MAYBE GOOD:
organic sprouted grains
fermented foods
supplements

Obviously, avoid the "for sure bad" foods and eat as much as you can of the
"for sure good" foods. Live on the "for sure good" foods if you can. If you
feel they are good, experiment with the "maybe good" foods. And if you must,
eat a limited amount of the "probably bad" foods.

With all the diets out there, and all the many versions of vegetarian, vegan
and raw-vegan diets being pushed now, you really have to learn to rely on
your own intuition and experience. In fact, with the state of the media,
corporate power, and the political arena today we need to develop this
ability to trust ourselves in all things. Eating according to the above
chart, exercising, getting out into nature (or better yet exercising in
nature), getting sufficient sleep, staying happy and grateful, maintaining a
relationship with a Higher Power, loving and being loved, and doing work you
feel good about will all help you to become more in tune with your body and
its messages regarding what it likes to eat. Listening and acting on these
messages puts you on a path to greater self-awareness, an awareness that not
only tunes you in to knowing what foods are good for you and what you should
and shouldn't eat at any given moment, but that also spans your mental,
emotional, and spiritual growth. This is because your body, mind and spirit
are not separate, but are working constantly together for your greatest good
and the simultaneous greatest good of the Universe.

Raw Foods Diet One of Seven Most Popular Diets in The World Today

-by Katie Savage 2/27/04

"The Top 7 Diets in the World", an article on "Medical News Today" on February 11th cited The Raw Foods Diet as being amongst the seven most popular diets in the world today, along with The Atkins Diet, The Zone Diet, and the Macrobiotic Diet.

What the heck is the Raw Foods diet, where did it come from and why is it suddenly so popular?

Raw Food Educator Jinjee Talifero at the Ekaya Institute of Living Food Eduction (E.I.L.F.E.)  (http://www.thegardendiet.com) believes that the Raw Foods diet has become a major trend due to the Internet, where there are literally thousands of articles, bulletin boards, and websites where raw foods advocates share with others the many ways in which they have improved their health through this diet. People around the world claim to have healed themselves of everything from acne, asthma and multiple sclerosis to cancer, heart disease and diabetes by consuming only unheated fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and juices and avoiding all heated foods.

The online raw food community has generated a slew of books about raw foods. A search for "Raw Food" on Amazon.com yields 355 books on the subject. David Wolfe, author of several books on raw foods appears on Sci-Fi Channel's Mad Mad House this spring. Roxanne's, a 5-Star Raw Food Restaurant in Larkspur California has a 6 week waiting list for reservations. Countless celebrities and Hollywood Industry trend-setters such as Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, Alicia Silverstone and Angela Bassett have all embraced the Raw Foods Diet. And famous Chef Charlie Trotter's book "Raw" will be available in May.

Unlike Atkins and the Zone there is no best-selling raw food book or central figure in the movement. There is no large corporate interest such as a big publisher or a vitamin manufacturer providing money to promote the raw food diet. But somehow this diet has crept from a little known secret of enlightenment-seeking initiates such as Shaolin Monks and Essene Priests to a leading-edge lifestyle being accepted worldwide.

The raw food diet is based on eating only unheated foods. According to the FDA heated fats become trans-fats, heated proteins are potential free-radicals, and heated carbohydrates contain numerous toxins. Heating also damages the vitamins, enzymes and nutrients in foods. So when we eat heated foods we are not only lacking nourishment but we are in fact taking toxic substances into our body.  The raw food diet is considered radical and extreme because mankind has been eating primarily cooked food for millions of years. It is interesting to wonder whether if we prove this practice to have been in error we will be able to alter our course as a species and perhaps improve our lot in life.

Since raw meat and dairy are unsafe, the raw food diet does not allow these foods. A raw food diet consists of unheated fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouted grains. Rather than being boring, raw food dieters claim that there are 1000's of recipes you can make with these basic foods. Other raw food eaters claim that there is no need for recipes because you become so sensitive on the raw diet that a simple piece of raw fruit or a raw vegetable tastes and satisfies better than a gourmet meal. Most raw food advocates agree that it is important to eat only organic food to avoid chemicals present in commercially grown produce and because it tastes better.

Talifero sells 8 raw food eBooks on her website at http://www.thegardendiet.com based on the experiences and example of her husband Storm who has been consuming a raw food diet for over 30 years. Storm, who is 54, has the physique and appearance of a 20-something year old athlete. His diet on a typical day consists of fresh squeezed organic orange juice for breakfast, a large salad with a dressing made of avocado, lemon and cold-pressed olive oil for lunch and a nutmilk shake made from germinated almonds and sunfllower seeds, water, raw honey, unrefined sea salt, and cold-pressed flaxseed oil for dinner. His diet is very low in calories, which is one way in which the raw diet is similar to the Calorie Restriction (CR) Diet. CR dieters also eat a lot of raw foods in an attempt to consume foods that are nutrient dense. According to recent studies in which mice who were fed a reduced calorie diet lengthened their lifespan by a third, the CR diet and raw food diet could potentially allow us to live until an average age of 130 years old.

Raw Foods Retreat Kicks Butt

LOS ANGELES, California, March 14th 2004/WeightWire
-- Storm is a 54 year old man who appears to be in his 30's. Gravity doesn't seem to exist on planet Storm. His face is smooth and his body is muscular and lean. Muscular (rather than just lean) is unusual on a raw-vegan, a person who eats only un-cooked vegetables, nuts, seeds, and fruits. Muscular is one of the reasons why Storm and his retreats are well known in the raw foods movement. It doesn't hurt that Storm is one of the oldest raw foodists in the movement, and that he has been a raw-vegan for over 30 years.

Storm's raw foods retreats don't just teach you how to shop for and prepare raw foods, but they also teach Storm's own workout regimen "The Circular Workout". The workout was designed by Storm to develop a balanced muscular development through working with the body's own weight.

Storm claims his success with the raw foods diet is based on a combination of exercise and creating tasty yet healthy recipes. "A lot of raw foods recipes aren't all that healthy. Once you start dehydrating foods you are just looking at another form of lifeless food, even though they call it raw" says Storm. "The other extreme is a raw diet that is all based on eating for health with no attention to how the food tastes. I never feel deprived. My recipes taste more delicious than cooked foods, and yet they are totally nourishing and free of toxins".

The results of attending Storm's retreats are intense. From Friday at noon until Monday at noon you prepare and eat only 100% organic fresh raw vegan foods and you work out most of the rest of the time. For only $100 a night, the price of a basic hotel, you get to relax in a hidden mountain valley in the national forest and eat "the highest food on the planet" according to Storm. People who come to the retreats often stay "raw for life", lose weight, rejuvenate, heal body mind and spirit, and develop a new physique.

The raw foods craze has taken off in Hollywood with celebrities such as Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, Alicia Silverstone, Donna Karan, Sting, Madonna, and Carol Alt adopting the diet. With Storm's retreat at "The Castle in the Woods" in Pine Mountain Club just an hour and a half from Los Angeles, Industry people and us regular folks have a new option for a real-quick get-in-shape retreat that just might change your health habits for good!

Welcome!

I'm a 210 lb, 27 year old female who has been struggling to lose an excess of 60 lbs for three years. I start different diets and exercise programs, they start working for me, then I lose interest, and go back to my old and unhealthy eating habits.

I've tried the high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet -- it works, but I lose interest.

I've tried counting calories and fat grams -- it works, but I lose interest.

I've tried the exercise 7 days a week for at least an hour. That worked, but was a very slow process, because I was gaining muscle tone and losing inches, but saw no results on the scale.

I need a way to commit to losing my excess weight. So, I'm asking for support from my fellow internet buddies, those who can relate to what I'm going through.

Join our moderated discussion/mailing lists, in which you can email the group, or a particular individual about your progress, your doubts, your gains, your setbacks, your frustrations or elation.

For me, personally, maybe if I have to post my progress every week, I will stay committed to accomplishing a goal very important to me.

I need to lose weight to feel better about myself, to decrease my unhealthy risk factors for disease and other illnesses, and to have more stamina and energy to keep up with my 3 1/2 year old daughter.
