Accessories--Yes, the Little Things Really Do Matter

by Katie Main

You've got the groom, you've got the gown...now my goodness, what great jewelry and accessories are you going to wear on your big day?

As the old saying goes, "God is in the details" and that isn’t any truer than when planning a wedding. So much time and effort goes into the selection of invitations, food, cake, music and more that by the time you get around to selecting your accessories, the temptation could be to say, "Forget it. My ring is enough!" But, that is one temptation you will want to resist. Accessories are like the beautiful bow on a present. Without the bow it's a box wrapped in paper but with it, the box becomes a decorative work of art that one can’t wait to unwrap.

So how do you decide what accessories you want to compliment your gown? First, take a look at your dress. Did you choose a princess style, modern, Elizabethan, formal or informal dress? As a rule of thumb, the more ornate and decorative your gown, the less jewelry or accessories you will want to add—which isn’t to say that you won’t want to accessorize at all—just remember, that as in most things, less really is more. Next decide what part of your body you want to highlight. Are your neck and shoulders exposed allowing for a chocker or necklace? Will your hair be pulled back to showcase beautiful drop earring? Or will your hair be cascading down, allowing for a delicate tiara to be placed atop your head. Whatever you decide, do a trial run of the accessory before your big day. This is not the time to discover that the beautiful chandelier earrings you’ve chosen pull on your ear to the point of pain, or that the "queen for a day" tiara feels more like a vice grip on your head.

Lastly, you’ll want to choose a beautiful handbag. Once again, keep in mind the style of your gown when selecting your purse. And remember most bridal bags can be dyed, so if you fall in love with a style but don’t see it in a shade that matches your wedding colors, inquire whether it can be dyed to match your specifications. The key to most bridal purses is to choose something on the small to medium size—this is one day you can get away without carrying a cell phone, car keys, or address book. All you need is a purse that is large enough to carry a few tissues (handy for when the day becomes overwhelming happy) and a lipstick and compact to freshen up before important wedding day photos.

Many happy wishes on your big day!

Bridesmaid's Dresses--Size Does Make a Difference

by Katie Main

We choose are friends and inherit our family, yes? And hopefully, we have chosen those friends based on their loving natures, vibrant personalities, and generosity of spirit. And with any luck, our family members possess those same traits. The majority of us probably haven’t based our decision to be friends with someone based on their looks or the shape of their body. So, in all likelihood, we have friends and family members that come in all wonderful shapes and sizes. Therefore I ask you, dear readers…why do we persist in trying to force these women, who are as varied in personality as they are in dress size, to all fit into the same style of bridesmaid dress for our wedding?

I remember being in a wedding once as a bridesmaid and looking at the photos after the wedding. It was like looking at a photo taken from the Guinness Book of World Records. You know, the pictures that have the tallest woman in the world standing next to the shortest one--or the heaviest woman next to the thinnest. Yes, there we were in all our wedding splendor looking absolutely ridiculous--each one of us wearing an identical dress that suited not one woman’s body type.

Why does the tradition exist that each bridesmaid wear the same dress? The main reason is so that the bride can further stand out from the crowd and not be upstaged by anyone else in the wedding party. The traditional thinking has been that if the same dress is worn by all the bridesmaids, there is consistency in the look and the eye is never pulled away from the bride by looking at all the different shapes and styles of the bridesmaid’s dresses. However, this thinking of universality usually fails more often than it succeeds. If you were to randomly read the minds of guests attending the wedding as the bridesmaids went down the aisle, I would bet that the thinking wouldn’t be "Ahh, there goes Catherine looking so pretty and not upstaging the bride at all." But instead, "Oh, poor Catherine, she just doesn’t have the bust to fill out that strapless gown." And "Oh, and there goes Anne...I can see now why she wants that breast reduction. She’s about ready to fall out of that dress!" And what has been accomplished? The very thing that we were striving not to have happen--attention has been taken away from the bride and diverted to the fashion faux pas' making their way down the aisle.

So what is the solution? Many brides (having suffered through the indignities of having to wear the wrong bridesmaid dress) are now opting for consistency of just color, not style. They understand that the spaghetti strap dress that does wonders for their sister’s toned shoulders makes their best friend look like a linebacker. Savvy brides realize that when their bridesmaids look good; the entire wedding party looks great.

Now, a word of caution. Don’t give your bridesmaids free reign. Tell them from the beginning what your requirements are. Should everyone find a tea length dress in lavender? Floor length in teal? Be specific. Accompany them when they go shopping for their dresses or, if that isn’t convenient, have them bring their chosen dress over and model it for you. From the beginning, let them know that you have veto power over any dress that they select. This is still your wedding and your approval should be given over each and every dress. And don’t wait until the day of the wedding to see their dresses. The last thing you need is a bridesmaid sauntering down the aisle in a minidress. Because if we admit it...all of us have that one friend or family member who might, just might, like to upstage us on our wedding day. :)

Bridal Bouquets - Here's 5 Alternatives

by Paul Ajao

Bridal bouquets are the most popular accessories for brides to walk down the aisle. But what if you want to be a bit different? Here are 5 alternative ideas that will work for both brides and bridesmaids:

1) Wrist Corsage

This is a small arrangement of flowers that is secured to the wrist. Roses, orchids and other small-headed flowers work best.

The great thing about a wrist corsage is that both of your hands are free - ideal if you're going to be hugging lots of guests.

Bianca Jagger looked very chic having chosen a wrist corsage instead of a bouquet when she married Mick Jagger.

2) Pomander

A pomander (also called a kissing ball) is a round ball shape of flowers that has a delicate ribbon handle. This is easy to carry as the ribbon just slips over the wrist. Roses are the most popular choice for pomanders but you could also use gerberas or carnations.

Pomanders are often carried by bridesmaids and flowergirls, but can look spectacular for the bride herself.

3) Hair Decoration

Hair decorations can be both elegant and stylish. You can choose one large flower such as a lily to form the focal point of your arrangement. This type of arrangement is worn on the side of the head.

Alternatively you could go for a circular 'halo' arrangement, such as Audrey Hepburn wore at her wedding. She had a halo arrangement of white roses that was worn on top of the head.

In addition to flowers, you can incorporate beads, jewels and feathers into your hair decoration. Have a quick chat with your florist and you could come up with a unique design that suits your personality and complements your bridegroom's boutonniere.

4) Prayer Book

Another choice instead of holding a bridal bouquet is to hold a prayer book or bible. Some brides like to decorate the prayer book with a small arrangement of flowers and/or ribbons.

You could use a cherished bible that was given to you as gift, or you could buy a new one as a symbol of your new life and how you plan to lead it.

5) Lantern or Candle Holder

These are great for church weddings, especially if it is an evening ceremony. Candles are very romantic and will add to the ceremony. Use non-drip candles and a lantern design that fully encloses the naked flame to reduce the risk of an accident.

The base of the lantern or candleholder can be decorated with a small arrangement of flowers to match the colors of your wedding theme.

Bridal Jewelry: Fulfilling a Wedding Tradition

by Sam Serio

‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.’ This is a saying that many brides take to heart when considering their wedding trousseau. From wedding gowns, accessories and motifs, brides from all walks of life throughout the years have tried their best to stick to this formula. It’s interesting to note that bridal jewelry can follow this adage, too.

‘Something old’ could most often be a piece of bridal jewelry that is a family heirloom. Sometimes the groom would give to his bride a ring or another piece of jewelry that had once been owned by his mother, grandmother, or past brides in his family. Maybe the bride would wear her own mother’s antique jewelry or some other gem that has been handed down to brides in the family from generation to generation. One thing is certain, wearing such bridal jewelry would reinforce a sense of family, tradition and continuity in a wedding ceremony.

‘Something new’ hardly needs any explanation. Thousands upon thousands of bridal jewelry stores, both the Internet e-commerce sites and bricks-and-mortar stores, offer a dazzling array of accessories to make the bride shine on her wedding day. The would-be bride can choose from among various jewelry pieces one or several items that she would wear at the ceremony and which she could treasure and keep as a memento of that most special day.

At first thought, ‘something borrowed’ doesn’t seem applicable to bridal jewelry. After all, a bride would most probably want to wear her own jewels and not have to borrow and then return them. But for women who want to add to the accessories that they will be wearing on their wedding day without having to spend thousands of dollars more to buy new ones, renting jewelry offers a practical solution. Many establishments rent out antique or estate bridal jewelry, including necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, and only the rental fee plus a refundable deposit need to be paid.

Finally, for that ‘something blue’ in a bridal jewelry ensemble, there are several gemstones that fit the bill. Depending on the shade of blue that she wants, a bride can opt for a necklace, bracelet, or earrings that are accented with sapphires, aquamarines or blue pearls. Hair ornaments or tiaras with other blue-tinted stones such as agate and topaz are also beautiful accessories for the bride.

The bride is the belle of the ball on her wedding day and it is important for her to look her best on that special occasion. Bridal jewelry, chosen tastefully and worn properly, will complement her wedding dress and make her look as radiant and as beautiful as any bride should be.

Bridal Lingerie Considerations

by John Barnes

u've seen thousands of photos, tried on dozens of gowns. But you may have missed some small items in your search for the perfect wedding-day look -- those essential unmentionables that go under the dress. Undergarments provide the foundation necessary for your outerwear to look how it's supposed to. They can change the way your dress fits, so you'll need to purchase them before your first fitting. Read on for the lowdown on lingerie.

BRA

The bra is the uberundergarment, that leading piece of lingerie to which all others play supporting roles. You'll need a good, supportive bra to lift you up as you walk down the aisle and keep you comfortable for hours of dining, dancing, and posing with relatives. Many bridal boutiques offer decorative bras that are as creative -- and nearly as costly -- as the gown itself. While some of these elegant brassieres have unique proportions that can be quite useful with the right gown, make comfort your priority: You don't want insufficient support or annoying wires cutting into your sides on your wedding day. And remember, you can slip into provocative, flimsy lingerie when you take the gown off.

Before you buy, ask about the store return policy. You'll likely want to try on a few different bras with your gown, so make sure that as long as you leave the tags on, the garment is returnable for a full refund.

Regardless of which style you choose, try not to have unrealistic expectations for your bra -- or yourself -- on your wedding day. If it's too uncomfortable to wear for a five-hour stretch on a normal afternoon, why suffer?

SLIMMERS

While old-fashioned girdles have long been out of style, you might try one of the several contemporary slimming undergarments that use Lycra or Spandex rather than stiff stays or ancient whalebone. Make sure you take your bra, slimmer, stockings, and shoes to your fittings; a body-support garment will give a slightly different shape than just sucking in your gut, and changing your "support" down the road will affect the way your gown fits.

PANTIES

As with the bra and slimmer, choose panties that offer comfort over sex appeal. (There's just no way to discreetly rearrange a pair of creeping panties through a wedding gown!) If your gown has an unusually slinky cut or is made of very thin material, you may want to use pantyhose with built-in underwear.

HOSIERY

If you want to wear a fancy garter belt with hooks to hold up thigh-high hose, make sure you choose one that fits snugly around your waist -- and won't be seen through your gown! The pressure of the hose can pull an inexpensive, elastic garter belt downward, leading to wrinkly knees and an evening of endless attemts to hitch up your hose (a task nearly as hard to hide as panty-tugging).

A garter belt is a pretty superfluous item, given the variety of sleek and sexy pantyhose available. But some women feel extra sexy just knowing they're wearing one. If you go with a garter, you'll need to test it out to make sure you can bear the inconvenience.

Before your wedding, try on your gown -- with your undergarments -- under the watchful eye of a close friend. Once you're sure you won't show more than you intend to show, forget about it and have fun!

Getting the most out of your wedding day shouldn't be contingent on your lingerie, but it will definitely have an impact on your memories. Take a chance on your styles, and do it differently than all others. Make your day more special for bride and groom with the little details that are so memorable.

Bridal Shower Planning and Tips

by Tara Greiner

A bridal shower is a chance for the bride-to-be to get together with her closest family and friends to celebrate her upcoming wedding. And of course to shower the bride-to-be with gifts!

The maid or matron of honor is usually the person that will host the bridal shower with the help of the other bridesmaids. Planning a bridal shower can be a little overwhelming. Most importantly it should be a memorable occasion for the bride-to- be before her wedding day. There are many different themes and ways to throw a bridal shower, from traditional ideas to newer ideas. However, there are certain key components for every bridal shower that you should keep in mind. Below are some tips to help you get started. Be creative and enjoy planning your bride-to-be’s bridal shower!

Make a Guest List – If the bridal shower is a surprise, you may need to have the groom, mother of the bride and others help you compile a guest list. If it’s not a surprise shower you can have the bride help you. The bridal shower should be made up of close friends, family and co-workers. Shower invites should only be sent to those people that will also receive a wedding invitation; unless of course the wedding is small and intimate with family and close friends only.

Set a Shower Date - The shower date should be anywhere within two months of the wedding day. Again, if it’s a surprise check with the groom for a good date, if it’s not a surprise you can ask the bride herself for a date she will be available. Sunday’s seem to be the most popular day for bridal showers and most people are off from work as well.

Pick a Shower Theme - Picking a theme makes planning the shower easier and will allow you to coordinate the decorations, invitations, favors and the like. Some of our favorite bridal shower themes are: a lingerie shower, wine shower, household shower, romantic shower and more. There are literally tons of different shower themes to choose from.

Shower Invitations - Once you have the date set you can send out invitations with an RSVP date. You should also include the theme of the shower as well. Also include information about where the wedding couple is registered. Some people like to buy a gift off of the wedding registry, while some choose to buy their own gift. They can follow the theme or the registry, either way they can’t go wrong!

If you are getting close to the RSVP date and you don’t have many replies you may want to give them a ring. Some people are busy with work and children and simply forget to RSVP but they do intend on showing up. An accurate number of guests is essential for your planning the shower and having enough of everything.

Decorations, Menus and Activities Oh My! The presentation is everything, from the bridal favors to the food and decorations. It will help set the tone of the bridal shower.

The food menu will depend on the theme of the shower and the timing as well. You may choose to include a lunch meal or light snacks and appetizers. The cake should also match the bridal shower theme as much as possible.

There are many different games to choose from! Games are a great way to get everyone talking and mingling. Remember just because you all know the bride doesn’t mean you also know each other, this is a good way to get to know one another. Don’t forget to also pick up some prizes for those that win the activities. The prizes can be candles to candy, a special journal etc.

Bridal Shower Favors - It is customary to give each person attending the shower a small favor. The shower favor does not have to be elaborate, it can be something simple yet nice that matches the theme of the wedding shower.

Following these few tips will assure wedding shower success! It may seem overwhelming at first but if you break down the shower into key points it will be much easier for you. Also you can then assign tasks to the family, friends and bridesmaids that have offered to help with the shower planning.

Bridal Shower Themes

by Samantha Taylor

It is the maid of honor's duty to organize the bridal shower and to ensure that the party is everything the bride expected. The best way to ensure that everyone will have fun is to create a theme around the bridal shower in which everyone can participate in. The following is a list of fun and exciting themes for bridal showers. Choose the one that suits the bride the best:

  1. Lingerie Bridal Shower – The lingerie theme has become more and more popular in recent years. This type of shower is typically for a younger bride who will be comfortable with the risqué nature of a lingerie bridal shower. Each guest, in lieu of bringing a traditional wedding shower gift, will bring a piece of lingerie for the bride. The groom will reap the benefits of a lingerie shower as well. Chances are the gifts will be put to great use on the honeymoon.
  2. Gourmet Bridal Shower – A gourmet bridal shower is perfect for brides who love to cook and sample different kinds of food. Instead of serving traditional snacks like cheese and crackers, ask each guest to bring a gourmet-related dish. Sending out invitations in the shape of foods or hand deliver invitations in an apron to add a little extra pizzazz to your shower.
  3. Around-the-Clock Bridal Shower – This is a relatively new bridal shower theme. It requires each guest to bring a gift that the bride and groom can use at a specific point throughout the day. For example, on one person's invitation it might read 3pm; while on another's it may read 1am. The gifts are distributed clockwise according to the hours each guest is assigned.
  4. Room-of-the-House Bridal Shower – Similar to the “around-the-clock” theme listed above; this theme requires each guest to bring a gift in relation to a specific room in the house. One guest might be assigned the kitchen; while another might receive the bedroom. Each guest would have to choose their gift pertaining to the room on the invitation.
  5. Stock the Bar - This theme requires each guest to bring wine, beer, spirits or liquor; which the couple can use to stock their bar at home. You may want to assign each guest a different kind of liquor to ensure that the couple doesn't end up with 10 bottles of tequila!

The bridal shower theme you choose will have a great impact on the success of your bridal shower. Make sure the theme is suitable for the personality of the bride; otherwise she may be disappointed with the outcome. Also take into consideration the types of gifts the couple could most use. If they already have a stocked bar, a "stock-the-bar" shower won't be a helpful theme. The outcome of this shower may determine whether or not you're ever asked to throw another one. But remember, above all, have fun!

Choosing the Perfect Wedding Ring

by Samantha Taylor

Traditionally, a wedding band was worn on the ring finger of the left hand because it was believed that the vein in that finger went straight to the heart. A wedding ring is a piece of jewelry which will be worn everyday of your life to signify your love and fidelity to your significant other. That being said, you want to ensure you choose the perfect ring, which can be difficult for someone who is inexperienced in this area. Luckily we can help you through the steps of finding the perfect wedding ring for the special person in your life.

The first thing to consider is the kind of metal you want for your wedding rings. Most wedding rings are found in yellow gold, white gold or platinum. These forms of metal vary in price and most likely this decision will be quite easy since most women already know what kind of ring they want.

The next step is choosing the stone for the ring. You will need to decide which kind of stone you want as well as the shape of the stone. Diamonds are still the most popular choice when it comes to stones for wedding rings however colored stones such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires are becoming more and more popular.

The last step is to find a reputable jeweler who you will be comfortable purchasing such an expensive piece of jewelry from. Perhaps it is best to use a jeweler who one of your friends or family members have already used and would recommend for you because of such great results.

If you are like most couples who are marrying, you will likely choose a diamond wedding ring. If you are doing so, you may want to keep the four C's in mind while doing so. The four C's are the diamond's color, cut, clarity and carat weight.

  1. Color – Diamonds are available in number of colors and shades including white, yellow, green, blue and pink. The color range starts at D and moves through the alphabet towards Z. The scale moves from white to yellow as it makes its way through the alphabet.
  2. Cut – The cut of the diamond is what gives the diamond personality. Diamonds which are cut well will be bright and sparkly, however diamonds that are cut poorly may end up looking dull and boring. Choosing and making sure the cut is perfect is a crucial step in the overall outcome of your wedding ring.
  3. Clarity – An inclusion in a diamond is an imperfection inside the stone which will greatly affect the overall worth of the ring. The size, color and position of the inclusions in your ring affect the clarity of the diamond. You want to ensure the diamond has good clarity.
  4. Carat Weight – A carat is divided into 100 equal parts (also known as points). Therefore a one carat diamond equals 100 points; half carat equals 50 and so on. When the diamonds are loose (before they are mounted on the ring), the weight is easy to determine, however, after the diamond has been mounted only a gemologist can determine the weight of the diamond(s).

Take your time when choosing a wedding ring for yourself or for your significant other. A wedding ring is a sign of your everlasting love to one another and is something that will be cherished for the rest of your lives.

Essential wedding accessories - INJECT Beauty Into The Eyes Of The Beholder

by Kacy Carr

Wedding accessories are so important when it comes down to adding the finishing touches to the bridal attire. If you think the bridal look is complete without wedding accessories then I urge you to think again. Wedding gowns need garnishing with elegance and this is achieved by choosing the right essential wedding accessories.

Wedding veils

Watch how the veil sets the scene and speaks volumes as it is nurtured onto the head expelling radiance and beauty. An amazing transformation transpires for the bride once the veil is positioned Design/style of your chosen gown will help you decide on what veil is best suitable. Traditional veils normally measure approx three and half yards long, in saying that remember this is your day and if you want your veil trailing along the floor then so be it.

Shoes & stockings

Crucial elements are shoes/stockings for the overall look on your wedding day. Before deciding on a pretty shoe because it looks good be sure to try it for comfort as you will be wearing them for the best part of the day. Shoes made of velvet, satin or silk are materials which once again are a common choice made by brides.

Jewelry Aside from the wedding band/ring consider Jewelry pieces like Grace Kelly pearl peepers with a matching string of pearls to compliment the gown, Jewelry selections as such just oozes and injects elegance, in fact adding glamour in a tasteful feminine way.

Headpieces

Diamante headbands and Juliet caps are generally used to hold the wedding veil in place. All brides' requirements have been catered for when looking for essential accessories in bridal shops from plain to bling bling. Crystals/pearls hold strong in a brides mind therefore dominating her way of thinking on designs and styles for her wedding gown and accessories.

Star attraction headpieces has to be the tiara all of a shimmer and glimmer.

Gloves

Another accessory that must not to be ignored especially if the wedding gown is off the shoulder/sleeveless, is gloves. Word has it the shorter the sleeve the longer the glove. Gloves simply conjure up an air of sophistication to any bridal outfit.

Wedding accessories are just as important as your gown so the right choice has to be made to look a million dollars

How Not To Stress Over Finding Your Mother Of The Bride Dress

by Audrey Cheong

Your daughter's wedding is announced. She has butterflies in her stomach and one thousand and one things to do. Her "butterflies" become yours and your thoughts are racing just like hers. You, as her mother, will help her plan her dream wedding, just like your mother planned yours. At the back of your mind......"What am I going to wear? Will I look just as beautiful as my daughter on her wedding day? So many people are going to be looking at me as well...."

Fret no more. Here are the RULES but like all rules, they may be broken or should I say improvised and revised to suit you. I say whatever makes you and/or your daughter happy!

1. Confer with your daughter. She will come up with a color scheme for her wedding.

2. Ask her whether she wants the color of your dress to complement her wedding color/colors or almost match it. Examples of complementary colors to a red color theme is burgundy, wine, claret red, dark pink, and purple. As for a "match", it would certainly be difficult to have an exact match of the colors, as your dress will be of a different manufacturer, style, fabric, and dye. So, do not stress over this.

3. You, as the mother of the bride, will decide on a color or colors, after consulting your daughter. Suggest to her to be flexible on the choice of colors--perhaps two or three choices would be great. Mother of the bride dresses are not made like bridesmaid dresses, the latter being preordered and tailored months ahead of time for the occasion. Shopping for a mother of the bride dress can be a headache and nightmare rolled into one, especially for the plus size woman or if you live in a rural city.

4. Do not forget to involve the mother of the groom. After you have an idea of what color you would or should be wearing, inform her. She will definitely appreciate that as she will be in a panic mode as well, going through the same motions as you will soon be, looking for that perfect "mother's" dress.

5. Shop as soon as you can. Finding YOUR dress is important too. Understand that you are shopping for a specific style that you like and look great in, a specific color, and then a specific size. Then, you will need to allow sufficient time for professional tailoring of the dress, to get it to fit just right! Also, what about the accessories like shoes and jewelry? You will be surprised how many ladies come to my online store within a WEEK to a few days of the wedding!

6. Shop bridal or department stores first. You can get a first hand look at the styles out there and the type and quality of fabrics. Do not ignore online formal wear stores. Visiting an online store is easy and stress free as they are a source of great ideas of what you would like to wear on that special day. Online bridal stores also carry the latest styles with the most competitive and reasonable prices.

7. Take care of yourself in these nerve-wrecking times of preparation. Remember, you need to look good as well, although it is your daughter's wedding.

8. Now, sit back and relax. You have found your most perfect mother of the bride dress and have a few more weeks to spare. Give yourself a big pat on the back!
