Since 1987, Roosevelt Roby, President & CEO of World Business Exchange Network has trained thousands of people throughout the country to be export agents in International Trade.
Los Angeles, CA (BlackNews.com) - Given widespread concerns about the strength of the American economy, it may surprise many to learn that it's still quite robust - and that U.S. exports are leading the way. The latest Commerce Department figures show that despite the recent downturns in the housing and credit markets, there is ample reason for economists to believe the nation stands a very good chance of avoiding recession. That is because exports to countries abroad are soaring, helping to keep the rest of the American economy's head above water. Americans sold a record 1.4 trillion dollars worth of goods and services to the world in 2006. Current quarterly trends show that when final numbers are in, 2007 exports will be even stronger. To put this in perspective, consider that one trillion dollars equals one thousand billion dollars.
All this is no surprise to Roosevelt Roby, an African American business developer who for more than 20 years has maintained a laser-like focus on teaching everyday people to fulfill their dreams by becoming exporters of American products to foreign countries. Roby is Chairman and CEO of the World Business Exchange Network, a web-based international trade association (toll-free at 800 537-7347) which he founded in 1987 and which thereafter quickly became an Internet pioneer, using its WBE.net site as the learning portal for thousands of export students well before the Web was widely seen as a major driver of commerce.
Upon receiving a reporter at his office overlooking Los Angeles International Airport, the CEO expands on why he is upbeat on America, U.S. exports and the future of his company. "The opportunities are almost endless. International trade is expanding at a level the world has never seen before. If we can maintain international civility, which is what trade enhances as opposed to war, there's really no end in sight to the opportunities. The opportunity ladder can be jumped onto and climbed by even the humblest individual who is ready to learn the export process and put in the work."
The son of impoverished Mississippi sharecroppers who was removed from school in the 6th grade to work on a plantation, Roby himself jumped onto the ladder by escaping the cotton fields during his teens in a bid for a better life. He found such a life in Chicago, though not without challenge. For years he worked at frustrating, low-paying jobs. Then, at age 27 -- with loving encouragement from his wife Cathy -- he launched the Windy City's first Black-owned diesel repair company, Contractor's Equipment Service. There he made more money in his first year than he would have previously thought to see in a lifetime. During the following years, Roby's successful real estate, retail and automotive ventures set the stage for the creation of WBE.net, whose thousands of present and former students are today spread all across the country.
Fast forward to the present. Roosevelt Roby beams as he clicks to an email sent by a new WBE Net member from Texas, Gerren Corprew: "Mr. Roby," writes Corprew, "I want to personally thank you for introducing me to the field of international trade. I have been involved for 3 1/2 weeks and have managed to put a deal together between a Polish supplier and a Canadian buyer. This really works!! This field is good for everyone, especially for people of color because it allows us to conduct business without being turned away because of the color of our skin. It is an 'Equal Opportunity' business. Buyers and Suppliers don't care what color you are. Their main interest is selling or buying product at a fair price. Like anything else worthwhile in life, this takes dedication, planning, work and persistence. It will happen if you WANT it to. I am just beginning in this field but I can see myself going very far in this business."
Noting that WBE-Net is a faith-based organization where God doesn't have to be checked at the front door, Roby tells anyone who'll listen that he's on a mission to let fellow African Americans as well as those from all backgrounds know they can achieve success by applying themselves and becoming world-class entrepreneurs.
He tells his students, "It only takes the faith the size of a turnip seed to move a mountain! If you trust in yourself and the Lord and work hard and apply your lessons, you can become God's New Millionaire."
The latest United Nations survey showing that Americans are the most productive workers in the world bolsters Roby's confidence in his mission. Asked what that mission is, Roby replies, "Growing U.S. exports, one person at a time, changing lives, and keeping America strong."

Red Cab of Brookline is now one of the largest taxi companies in the U.S. that is 100% owned and operated by individuals of Haitian descent.
Greg Moore a managing partner at CVP indicated that "In the Boston area, there are a disproportionate number of folks of Haitian descent who are employed within the taxi industry. Detroit, MI (BlackNews.com) (2/2/06) - In 1925, a group of Detroit businessmen met and agreed to purchase land for a cemetery. They formed Detroit Memorial Park Association, elected officers, sold stock and the first burial was eighty years ago, in 1926.
The Company now owns three Michigan cemeteries and an office building in the New Center area of Detroit. The East Cemetery is located on eighty-five acres on Thirteen Mile Road in Warren, the West Cemetery, a sixty-two acre site, is on Plymouth Road in Redford. Gracelawn Cemetery, a fifty-acre cemetery, is located on Saginaw Street in Flint, Michigan. The Company also owns Courier & Fax, Inc. a same day delivery service with offices on Twelve Mile Road in Southfield, Michigan.
Prior to 1925, blacks in Detroit suffered unspeakable indignities because of the white-operated cemeteries. A few of these cemeteries allowed burials of blacks but only on certain designated days and at inconvenient burial hours. Most often the funeral entourage was directed to a side entrance. Added to this were the exorbitant fees that were charged for the burial of a black person.
All members of Board of Directors, then and now, are African Americans. Through the years they have assisted the Detroit community in many ways starting with donating land for vegetables gardens and providing assistance with loans for home mortgages. They have helped hundreds of nonprofit organizations and recently donated money to Hurricane Katrina family that evacuated to Detroit.
Detroit Memorial park East recently completed the building of a new Mausoleum, which has a beautiful Chapel adorned with an old rugged cross wall mural. A companion, adjacent Mausoleum, to be completed in the spring of 2006, will have the capability to accommodate any and all oversized deceased persons whose families prefer above-ground interment. It will be the first structure of its kind in the Detroit area. In 1988 the company purchased Detroit Memorial Park, West. It has a new office building, a new Mausoleum and plans for a companion Mausoleum with a Chapel are in the making. In 1996, the Company purchased Grace lawn Cemetery, a fifty-acre cemetery in Flint, Michigan.
Detroit Memorial Park has a fully funded Perpetual Care Fund, which is money set aside from each burial or lot sale, its interest to be used to keep the cemeteries beautiful forever. Current Board Members, all related to the 1925 investors, are C. Robert Bass, DDS, President; Wilbur B. Hughes, III, General Manager and President of Courier & Fax, Inc.; William Andrews, Jr.; Robert Bell Bass; George Dunbar, Jr.; Allen Rawls; Winona Allen Rawls; Roberta Hughes Wright.
DMP is very proud of its staff, sales persons and grounds workers. In addition, they have an exceptional relationship with the Detroit and Flint Funeral Homes. The Funeral Directors/Morticians are like partners and the Company considers it a blessing to have more than thirty well-established, beautifully operated establishments as working partners. Be your own best publicist, when you can't afford one: Learn 5 publicity tips for your business success
Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) (2/3/06) - Do you have a business and it needs publicity? Have you talked to publicists and their fees are way out of your price range? Do you have a publicist and you're still not getting noticed?
African-American publicist Yoshi Simms knows this circumstance all too well, which is how The Publicity Formula was born. The Publicity Formula is a company that creates taylor-made, step-by-step publicity plans for companies of all sizes. Businesses pay one low fee that is less than half the cost of a publicist and lasts for the life of your company, not just one month.
When Yoshi started her first online business back in the spring of 2002, she was shocked by the $1,200 to $1,500 a month fees that publicists were charging. She knew at this point there had to be an alternative. So she thought and thought. She thought about all of her experiences she has accumulated from some of the largest advertising and publicity companies in the world. Why not put it to use. So she decided to do her own publicity. She did so well, her company received a whopping 605, 000 hits in the first month!
This was due to Yoshi's own formula for publicity success. She realized that traditional publicity would not give her optimum results. She knew that her company and company goals were different from any other business, therefore her publicity plan must be different from any other business. Actually, her publicity plan was taylor-made just for her business. Her business concept and goals were in perfect alignment with her publicity strategy.
Yoshi Simms, founder of The Publicity Formula will be conducting a free teleseminar, via phone on Thursday, February 9, 2006 at 7pm EST teaching you "5 Publicity Tips for Your Business Success". Please send an email to info@thepublicityformula.com to register. Please include these 6 things in your email: your name, business name, business website, phone number, email address and 1 or 2 lines describing your business. Space is limited. Los Angeles, CA (BlackNews.com 2/27/06) - OneUnited Bank became the first Black-owned internet bank in the country with its new ability to open accounts online. The Bank has launched a campaign to increase financial literacy and increase the use of technology in urban communities to build wealth and support economic development.
For the first time in history, a Black-owned financial institution provides a secure and convenient way for Black Americans to garner their spending power and re-channel it back into urban communities. OneUnited Bank's new website, www.oneunited.com, encourages viewers to support "a movement" of community re-investment by opening an FDIC insured savings account that earns 3.75% APY and provides free access at over 5,000 ATMs nationwide.
"We hope to revolutionize our community's view of the banking industry from being an "old boys' network" to being a vehicle for "community empowerment", states Kevin Cohee, Chairman & CEO of OneUnited Bank. "OneUnited Bank is fulfilling a 100-year old civil rights dream of garnering the $700 billion spending power of America's Black community and re-channeling it back in the form of loans to finance affordable housing, businesses, churches and community development. Quite frankly, there is no substitute for a strong, vibrant Black-owned bank that is committed, has a physical presence in our community and also offers convenient access."
OneUnited Bank financed over $150 million in new loans with over 50% in low to moderate income communities in 2005 and almost $500 million in new loans since 2003. With record earnings and strong asset quality, the Bank is well positioned to fulfill its community development mission. OneUnited Bank's print and radio advertising campaign promoting its exciting online program began airing February 17th.
OneUnited Bank (www.oneunited.com) is the largest Black-owned bank, first Black-owned internet bank and first Black-owned interstate bank in America with over $550 million in assets. The Bank's mission is to be the premier bank serving urban communities by offering affordable financial services and promoting financial literacy and wealth building. The Bank has grown through a combination of organic growth and by acquiring community banks, including Founders National Bank and Family Savings Bank in Los Angeles, California, Boston Bank of Commerce in Boston, Massachusetts and Peoples National Bank of Commerce in Miami, Florida, that share its mission. OneUnited Bank is a certified Community Development Financial Institution that has received the highest award by the U.S. Department of Treasury for its community development lending for two consecutive years.
Nationwide (11/28/05 - BlackNews.com) - The Best Pitch is the leading company that connects African American clients to corporate sponsors by providing a state of the art Corporate Directory for only $9.99, that connects you with the right decision makers. In addition, The Best Pitch connects African American Business owners throughout the Nation with over 7,000 investors. Satoya Cole, a customer of The Best Pitch, confides, "African American Business owners and entrepreneurs have the good ideas, we just don't have the resources. And honestly we don't even have the money to hire the big wig firms to even get where the other businesses are. The Best Pitch gets us to where we need to be without shelling out all of our money. Who can beat $9.99? They got me 1 million dollars from an investor. I went to a company that charged me $3,500 and didn't even get me the results that I needed." The Best Pitch connects African Americans who are serious about growing their business and having their dreams come true.
The Best Pitch plans on continuing to level the playing field for African Americans, by not only providing access to corporate sponsors and investors, but by also chipping away at the big time publicity firms that charge $2,500 - $5,000 per month. Jennifer Martin, Vice President explains, "We plan on being the Wal-Mart of business services. We provide the same excellent services, we just provide them for customers who were virtually ignored for years and years." Ms. Martin continues, "African Americans for far too long have been relying on just their word of mouth in the community. And they know as a business owner it's not enough, but they simply can't afford to do anything but that. We have decided to make sure that they can afford it." Corporate sponsors are so interested in bridging the gap that they have provided The Best Pitch with extra assistance to ensure that they continue to be reasonable to the African American community. It's a very vital community worth $680 billion dollars.
How it works? The African American business owner simply goes to the web site: www.thebestpitch.com, subscribe to the services, and instantly the customer receives the services that he or she needs. The Best Pitch connects Black Business owners to investors who have portfolios ranging from 1 million dollars to 20 billion dollars. And those investors trust The Best Pitch to deliver qualified applicants to their business. As the fourth quarter comes to a close, corporate sponsors are gearing up for next year, and are ready to align with the African American community, and they have specifically and explicitly made it clear that The Best Pitch is the company that they want to hire to make sure that their brand is connecting with their customers. Sheryl Wiley, "They make it seem so easy to receive abundance it can really scare you. When I got the call that I received the sponsorship I almost fell out my chair. I screamed and tears streamed down my face, and the customer service rep just said calmly, 'We got over that hurdle together. We made it ma'am'. I knew then that I'd keep coming back to this business over and over again. I will recommend them to everyone."
No newcomer to investors, corporate sponsors, or the media, The Best Pitch has hired former investors, corporate sponsors as well as journalists to ensure that they deliver the best service to both their client and the Corporate world. Charles Singleton, communications director explains, "Once any African American receive our services they rave on and on about it. I think we've grown without any commercials, and without any radio simply because our customers are telling everyone. The vice president just decided to start implementing commercials and getting the press involved on a consumer level because so many of our current customers state, 'everyone should know about this service'. And I agree everyone should." The Best Pitch closes the gap between the Black community and the rest of the world.

Another recent study suggests that within the next 2 years, over two-thirds of all rental property owners in the United States will increase their renting fees by as much as 35% to help offset the unexpected costs resulting from various tenant violations - ranging from property damage to unpaid renting fees.

Miami, FL - (9/2/03). With more than 200 businesses and service providers introducing their business to the Pan African community in its first installment, Gospel AM 1490 WMBM is preparing to publish the second edition of the WMBM Purple Pages Black Business Directory. The directory was designed to fill the need for a comprehensive display of Black and Caribbean owned businesses and services, as well as ministries. It also allows the inclusion of non Pan African businesses that serve a predominantly Black clientele.
"This year we're expanding the directory to include businesses from the Bahamas Islands and other cities across the United States. Miami is one of the biggest tourists, entertainment and athletic centers right now and we believe local businesses need to introduce themselves to national businesses and vice versa - so this time around we re looking at making the WMBM Purple Pages a national networking source," said Dorcas McCrae, WMBM Sales Team Leader.
The book is called "purple pages" because it, in fact, is printed on vivid purple pages which automatically grab the attention of a potential consumer. Distributed through the area s largest ministries and high traffic retail and service points, the first edition of this directory continues to generate results for advertisers like Attorney Thomasina Williams, the Metro Miami Action Plan, State Farm Insurance and others.
McCrae says they believe the results are due, in large part, to the fact that the book does not have single line listings, but is a block and page configuration of advertisements. Adding that "people have the opportunity to introduce their business in a more detailed manner than a phone number and address; so when a prospective customer is shopping - they've got definitive information to help them make a decision."
The WMBM Purple Pages 2004 will be released late January with a distribution list from Nassau, Bahamas to Berkely, California and at least 100 points within the State of Florida. Businesses who are interested in tapping into the potential of the Black business directory must do so by November 14, 2003.
Information on inclusion in the directory can be found at www.wmbm.com or by calling 305-672-1100, 1-800-721-WMBM.

Washington, DC - (9/2/03). In these uncertain economic times, more and more Americans are worried about pay cut and job loss. And the concern is not limited to the private sector workforce. Government workers are also just as worried about the shifting job market.
The National Coalition for Equity in Public Service (NCEPS) will hold a Diversity Summit October 16th 2003 in Washington D.C., to address these growing concerns. The summit will also address the government's practice of outsourcing jobs to the private sector, civil service reform and issues regarding worker pay and benefits.
NCEPS is a partnership of Blacks In Government (BIG), Federally Employed Women (FEW), Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC), and National IMAGE. NCEPS was organized in 1994 to address the needs and concerns of minorities and women in the public workforce.
Although NCEPS meets on a regular basis to coordinate their effort on those issues which they believe impact upon their members and constituents, a special meeting was held during the Blacks In Government 25th Annual National Training Conference. The meeting was to plan the Diversity Summit that will be held on October 16, 2003 in Washington, DC.
NCEPS will meet again on September 12 at the Office of Personnel Management in Washington, DC. The meeting will follow OPM's program introducing its SES Cadre program.

Minority-owned company continues to enhance cell phone experience
Brooklyn, NY - (9/8/03) Mobile content is extremely popular and a huge success in Europe, and the Pacific Rim. Mobile entertainment, in its 5th year, is receiving a growing acceptance in North America. Ringtones, logos, SMS (simple messaging service) or text messaging are common characteristics of a cell phones, but new handsets with color screens offer a multimedia experience.
There is one minority owned and controlled startup company in Fort Lee, New Jersey that is taking bold steps to make its presence felt in this new marketplace by launching a new content site Gigavue.net that is pronounced phonetically Gee-Ga-View, that extends better quality of Monophonic and Polyphonic Ringtones, plus games, graphics, logos, real tones, message tones and applications that are affordable.
"There are real and great opportunities in this space and we intend to position ourselves to get a piece of the maturing mobile entertainment market," said co-founder Jason Wint. The practical applications of mobile entertainment is that it is a value added service to copyright owners, record labels, film companies, Performance Right Societies, wireless operators like Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, Cingular, Nextel and T-Mobile and cell phone manufacturers.
WNP (wireless number portability) was written into wireless operators policies since 1997, it simply means that, if a consumer is not happy with the service then that person could switch companies and take their phone number and handset, new or old, to another wireless operator for free. When WNP was enforced in Europe a few years ago some wireless operators closed down, because of a very high churn rate, people switched companies due to their dissatisfaction with the service that they were given. WNP will be enforced in the United States on November 23rd 2003.
"We are in our early stages, but based on the research from our previous test site, in which it generated close to half a million unique visitors, 35,000 average visitors a week and 5,000 per day within the duration of 2 and half months. We have built a better mousetrap, because within six (6) hours of the new web site being up we received 55,000 hits and over the weekend we accumulated 150,000 without any promotion and advertisement and orders were placed. We are poised for strategic partnerships and expansion funding," said Jason Wint.

Personal Finance Tips from the Black Wealth Network, your guide to African American wealth building
Invest Your Savings
Why should you invest your savings? According the Ibbotson Associates' research, from 1925 to 1998, the average compound annual return of small company stocks is 12.4%, large company stocks is 11.2%, long-term government bonds is 5.3%, T-bills is 3.8% with an average inflation rate of 3.1%.
For the best long-term return, you should always allocate a portion of your investment into stocks or stock mutual funds. Despite the stock market's gyrations, stocks provide higher returns than bonds and cash over time.
Simple Ways to Save Money
Having trouble saving your hard-earned money for the future? Have you been able to set aside 10% of your gross income for savings of some type, as most financial planning experts suggest? If not, here are some simple but effective ways to start saving money now:
1) Take Advantage of Your Employer-Provided Retirement Savings Plan
Most employers (especially the larger ones) offer some form of tax-deferred retirement saving programs such as 401(k) or 403(b). They will allow you to have an amount deducted automatically from each of your paychecks, before taxes are taken out (which can lessen the impact to your paycheck), and are often supplemented with employer matching contributions. If your employer does offer matching contributions, your company is essentially giving you free money in return for investing money for yourself in its retirement plan. It's hard to find a reason not to take advantage of such an offer. Even if your employer does not match your contributions, your investment in these qualified plans grows tax-deferred (earnings are not taxable each year) until you take the money out upon retirement. This is one of the best ways to put away money for the future.
2) Set Up a Monthly Automatic Savings Plan for Yourself
If your employer does not offer a Retirement Savings Plan (or you are not eligible or have already contributed the maximum amount allowed for the year), you can still take advantage of an automatic deduction program to save money. You can easily set up a plan to have some amount of money deducted from your paycheck or bank account to fund your IRA, a mutual fund account or a money market account. This is an easy and effective way to discipline yourself to save a set amount of money on an ongoing basis. Over time, you will get used to leaving that money untouched. Each year, try to increase the amount you save monthly by $25 or $50, and watch your savings grow.
3) Limit Yourself to a Reasonable Monthly Spending Budget
It's important to know exactly what you are spending your money on, and how much you are spending. Once you understand where your money is going, you can try to avoid overspending on non-essential items. That way, you may be able to find some extra money for saving and investing that you previously didn't feel you had. Setting up a budget basically gives you more control over how you spend your money, which can lead to healthier spending and saving habits.
And remember, it's never too late to start saving. The key is to get started now.

Event will feature seminars, tours, and professional and student design competitions
Washington, DC - During October 23-25, hundreds of the nation's most accomplished African American architects, architecture students, and other minority architects from across the country will convene in Chicago to network and address issues and ideas that are changing the nature of the profession. Just steps away from the towering skyscrapers along Michigan Avenue and blocks from the city's historic Bronzeville neighborhood, the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) 2003 International Congress and Exposition, Redefinition, will highlight opportunities for participants to explore and expand the practice, design, culture, education and identity of architecture. Chicago's rich architectural history and vibrant African American culture has allowed the city to remain at the forefront of academic and professional discourse. Drake Dillard, Architect, National President with the resources of the NOMA Illinois chapter will assist in providing an enric! hing experience.
NOMA's 31st annual national conference will be held at the Hyatt McCormick Hotel. Advance registration by October 1, 2003 is strongly encouraged. The three-day event will include workshops and seminars for students, professionals and industry representatives about architecture and construction-related issues, including urban housing, academia and practice, and starting one's own firm. Participants will also discuss the core values shared by African American and other underrepresented minorities in the field and identify methods of enhancing one's client base. Sponsors and vendors for the conference include: the U.S. General Services Administration, Walt Disney Imagineering, Black Enterprise magazine, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and Firefree 88. A vendor's fair will allow participants to engage in relationships with industry representatives from the construction arena.
Entertainment includes the host chapter party, Bros Arts Ball, and banquet and awards gala. Founding members of NOMA will be in attendance. Lee Bey, deputy chief of staff for Mayor Richard M. Daley and former Chicago Sun-Times architecture critic, has been invited to deliver the keynote address.
The Washington, DC-based National Organization of Minority Architects has promoted the quality and excellence of minority design professionals since its inception in 1971. There are NOMA chapters across the country, increasing recognition on college campuses and providing greater access to public policy-makers. The group's objectives include fostering communication and fellowship among African American and other minority architects; strengthening cultural, economic and political interaction between architects and visual and performing artists in minority communities, promoting the design and development of living, working and recreational environments of the highest quality; speaking with a common voice on matters of public policy; and acting as a source of motivation and inspiration for minority youth.

Mobile, AL - (BlackNews.com 2/9/06) In an attempt to offer more choices for an increasing consumer base, USEBOBO.com (Use Black Owned Black Operated) has announced a major decrease in registration fees for Black owned businesses. This came as a result of an overwhelming number of consumers requesting that USEBOBO.com contact them when a Black Owned business registers in their community. "It's really been amazing," said USEBOBO.com president Kyle Moffett. "You can follow the requests every morning. They begin on the eastern seaboard and move across the country as the day goes on. By mid-afternoon, we're recording the names and email addresses of consumers in California and Washington."
USEBOBO.com created the database of interested consumers as a result of the constant emails they were receiving from them wanting to know about businesses in their community. "When we first started this company, I could expect several emails a week from consumers in cities like Philadelphia and Chicago," said Moffett. "We were also getting specific request from all over the country. There was one woman in California who was relocating to Florida and was looking for a Black owned real estate company and construction company. We would also get a lot of requests for attorneys and doctors."
Moffett made his point very clear with his next statement, "I have a large oak tree in my back yard. Every so often the roots from the oak tree will boar through the sewage line from my home. I had to call a plumber yesterday to fix this problem. I couldn't find a Black plumber in my community. That was $90 that could have been recycled back into my community...our community! Had that plumbing company been Black, the chances are greater that that $90 would have been deposited into a Black owned bank. The chances would be greater that a portion of that $90 would be spent at a Black owned restaurant. That $90 could have gone to purchasing ad space in a Black owned newspaper or it could have gone toward the education of that plumbers' child at an HBCU. We must bridge the gap between Black businesses and consumers or we will continue to short change our selves and our communities."
"We must convince the Black owned businesses in America that USEBOBO.com will lead them to more customers and higher profits," stated Moffett. USEBOBO.com showed it's determination to do just that by temporarily dropping its annual registration fee from $125 to $39.99.
"USEBOBO is offering this discount for the next 90 days," said Moffett. "We feel that every Black owned business out there should be able to take advantage of this offer. We also feel that it will be easier for friends and loved ones to purchase memberships as gifts for the business owners they know."
