5-5-03. Deadly tornadoes destroyed homes and lives in Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and Tennessee on Sunday. According to emergency management officials, 37 people died and others are reported missing. Lawrence County, Missouri was the hardest hit with a tornado wrecking havoc on the ground for over 30 minutes. According to a Pierce City, Missouri utilities clerk, “our downtown area was pretty much leveled. It was a beautiful little town.” Two of the fatalities were at a shelter. Tornado watches (when conditions are favorable for tornadoes) are still in effect from northern Mississippi to northern Alabama and northern Georgia.

Ryan Jewell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says that “unofficially, views of the storm damage appear to be in the range of F3 or higher.” Based on the Fujita scale, F3 tornadoes have wind strengths of 158 to 206 miles per hour. F5 is the highest.

University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Graduation Commencement Set for May 10

5-9-03. The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith will hold its graduation commencement exercise in Stubblefied Center on May 10. Summer 2002 and Fall 2002 graduates, along with candidates for graduation Spring 2003 and Summer 2003 will be recognized. 45 students will be the first graduates to receive bachelor’s degrees from the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith since it became a four-year university. Graduates who have completed programs offered by Arkansas State University and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock through the University Center on campus will also be honored.

George Haley, Brother of Alex Haley, Among Graduation Speakers for University of Arkansas

5-12-03. George Haley, longtime civil activist and brother of the late writer, Alex Haley, will speak at the graduation commencement exercises for the University of Arkansas. In 1952, he became the second African-American graduate of the University of Arkansas Law School. Haley has served in a number of positions for several U.S. presidential administrations including George W. Bush. Haley, who was appointed U.S. envoy to Gambia in 2000 by President Clinton, received an honorary doctor of law degree during the graduation ceremony. He spoke to students about the character test the United States was facing today and how it was equivalent to the one in the 1960s; only then it was a domestic one where people struggled with equal opportunities for all regardless of race, now, it is an international one, as people struggle to define the U.S. place in the world.

Among the speakers was Barbara Batson, Director of the career-development center, who warned the University of Arkansas graduates that finding a job will depend on flexibility and persistence. With the job market being tougher than usual and slow, many graduates are opting to continue on to graduate school. Batson said the job market in Northwest Arkansa is doing better than other areas, especially in the areas of health care and education. A willingness to move and taking a less-than-ideal starting position helped some graduates land jobs in the workforce.

Fred Smith, retired president of Donrey Media Group and current chairman of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation received an honorary doctorate degree of arts and letters. He spoke to the graduates about not missing the rewards of life by working to hard. Some of the principles that guided him in his career were knowledge in his area of expertise, teamwork, and keeping up with the ever-changing technology. The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation is one of the thirty largest nationwide.

Graduation exercises were held at Bud Walton Arena. About 2,414 students received their undergraduate degrees.
